SRS rear window curtain shield airbag deployed

TOKYO : September 30, 2008 - TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it has developed an SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) rear window curtain shield airbag the world's first* to protect rear passengers' heads in the event of a rear-end collision.

Olofström : September 30, 2008 - Volvo Cars Body Components in Olofström is investing in the future. The most modern stamping system in Europe - a new line with five presses and ten robots - produces body parts for the Volvo XC60.

And the new Recycling Train, which transports scrap for reuse, means about 5,000 fewer truck transports and 55 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions in one year.

Wednesday 24 September was a big day at Volvo Car Body Components (VCBC) in Olofström. Both the Recycling Train and the new press line - Line 38 - were officially inaugurated.

The official premiere trip of the Recycling Train was organised by Stena Recycling, with guests which invited guests from the local council, the region and press supplier Müller Weingarten/Schuler along for the ride. The new train considerably cuts both costs and environmental impact compared with previous scrap transport alternatives. The train has been running since September 3.

Biggest investment in 20 years
Line 38 has cost 300 million kronor (approx. $46.9 million) and is the biggest investment made at the Olofström plant in 20 years.

"The project started in 2004," says Technical Project Manager Anders Boling.
"That was when we reviewed our stamping capacity. It was clear that new press lines would be needed, but there was to be a lot of discussion before the first sod was turned in 2006," he says.

It was no foregone conclusion that the line should be built in Olofström. It was, in the event, the plant's track record and unique expertise in automotive stamping that convinced Ford and Volvo Cars to make the investment here.

Line 38 means 45 per cent higher efficiency for VCBC, as it is able to press twice as many parts (blanks) per stroke (descent) of the press. Examples of the XC60 parts that areto be made here are the doors, bonnet, front wings, wheel arches and tailgate.

The compact size (length: 3.87 metres), original two-tone colour scheme and exclusive interior appointments of this innovative vehicle combine to produce a particularly forceful personality. Its extensive glazed area and four roomy seats afford a sense of space and light. Ideal for escaping the crowd, Renault Kangoo be bop offers open-top motoring at the rear thanks to its glazed sliding roof and rear tailgate window which slides out of sight. At the front it has two tilting glass panels, plus a fixed central glass panel. This new car is ideal for customers who wish to move away from established automobile cues and who are looking for a vehicle that expresses optimism and joie de vivre without being showy.


A truly original reworking of a show car

Renault Kangoo be bop came into being in the wake of the enthusiasm prompted by the Kangoo Compact Concept show car at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. A compact leisure vehicle with an original design and strong personality, Kangoo Compact Concept showed that an unusual car could appeal to active, sporty urban dwellers who share the values of fun and friendship. In addition to its design, the originality of the concept lay in its extensive glazed area and unique convertibility solutions, with the emphasis on space and light. Renault Kangoo be bop’s designers have succeeded in producing a production model which echoes the strengths and features of the concept car.
Renault Kangoo be bop has the Kangoo front end with its short bonnet and droplet-shaped headlamps. Light floods into the cabin through the sweeping, steeply raked windscreen for outstanding visibility. Renault Kangoo be bop differs from its elder sibling by being even shorter (less than four metres in length), as well as through some original styling details, such as the black headlamp masks, specific bumpers, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Ground clearance has been raised 20mm compared with New Kangoo, while protective side mouldings lend the look of 'urban adventurer', ready to confront the great outdoors. Its robust, expressive lines are energized by the standard two-tone colour scheme handed down from the concept car. The bonnet, grille, outside rearview mirrors, front bumper bib and tailgate panel are Sideral Grey, while the rest of the bodywork is another colour, e.g. Etincelle Orange, borrowed from Kangoo Compact Concept. Another similarity is the elongated, semi-circular form of the side windows, which make Renault Kangoo be bop instantly recognisable.The large tailgate window slides right out of sight into the door. It is operated by a switch on the instrument panel or by a third button on the ignition key, and makes it possible to access the boot without having to unlock the car or open the tailgate. The system naturally incorporates an anti-pinch safety function.
Renault Kangoo be bop features the same convertible roof configuration seen on the concept car, with a fully glazed, forward-sliding panel at the rear. With the rear section of the roof and rear window in the open position, Renault Kangoo be bop's rear passengers are able to enjoy the delights of open-air motoring. The roof opens at an angle which creates a deflecting effect to prevent bothersome turbulence while on the move. Its 'open' and 'closed' positions are secured by two side locks. It opens independently of the tailgate with the help of two small rams. The wide, fixed middle glazed panel contributes to the cabin’s brightness, while the two front tilting glass panels ensure that front-seat occupants also get a taste of the open air. Even when open, the panels do not interfere with the forward-sliding rear roof. The glazed roof panels have all been treated to filter out the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Although Kangoo be bop’s dashboard and front seats are the same as New Kangoo’s, the rear features two individual, raised seats which make the interior redolent of a four-seater lounge on wheels.

The different exterior colour schemes and interior trim are reminders that Renault Kangoo be bop is at home in the city as it is on jaunts in the great outdoors and can look either 'chic' or 'fun'. The chic look is derived from the Nacré Black, Pavot Red and Glacier White body colours, combined with the red and black upholstery and dark charcoal dashboard. The fun-loving be bop comes in a choice of an Etincelle Orange or Glacier White exterior together with silver, blue, and orange upholstery, plus a blue dashboard, as featured on Kangoo Compact Concept. The white instrument backgrounds and satin-finish chrome climate control console further emphasize the exclusive feel of the car’s interior.
For the first time in the Kangoo range, Renault Kangoo be bop can be ordered with Carminat Bluetooth® CD navigation. In addition to its attractive price, this system offers all the fundamental multimedia features, namely GPS navigation with traffic information, a 16/9 seven-inch colour display and Bluetooth® telephony.
Renault Kangoo be bop features numerous travel accessories that mark it out as a car for getting away from it all. A luggage rail above the tailgate window can be used for carrying long items such as surfboards, while a range of decals and stickers permits customers to customise their Renault Kangoo be bop. If they wish, occupants can to listen to their own playlists thanks to the Plug and Music option. It is located in the glovebox and has USB, MP3 player, and iPod® connection ports. It is controlled via the steeringwheel-mounted fingertip remote control. Rounding off the multimedia equipment is the hands-free Bluetooth® telephone control.

A unique ride experience

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, Renault Kangoo be bop affords an amazingly generous, warm living space. The emphasis is on space and light. Its extensive 3.9 sq. metres of glazed area (roof and windows) flood the cabin with light. Front occupants benefit from the sweeping windscreen inherited from New Kangoo, while the large, semi-circular side windows heighten the rear passengers’ sense of travelling comfort, redolent of the tranquillity afforded by a modern high-speed train such as the TGV. The rear windows also permit excellent three-quarter rear vision for manoeuvring and overtaking.
All four passengers benefit from individual seats which enable them to profit fully from the ride experience. The front seats are as spacious as those of New Kangoo and benefit from 1,510mm of elbowroom, as wide as anything on the market. The ergonomically designed driver’s seat is worthy of the best MPVs. Although the dashboard’s colour scheme and cladding are different from those of New Kangoo, its forms, as well as its ease and comfort of use are identical. Deeply recessed below the dashboard lip, the displays are always shaded from the light and easy to read. The gearshift control on the centre console falls naturally to hand, as do the very short stalk switches and audio remote control. The radio display screen is also remote for greater comfort. Thanks to its original aviation-style design, the handbrake frees up an appreciable nine litres of stowage space in the armrest between the two front seats. Very special attention has been lavished on the quality and finish of materials used.
Rear passengers enjoy unique travelling comfort. The individual seats are inspired by those of Scénic. They are fore/aft-adjustable and their backs can be reclined. They are mounted 9cm higher than the front seats, producing an amphitheatre arrangement that affords an astonishing 180° panoramic view. Looking out through the glazed roof and sweeping side windows from the rear seats, passengers experience a heightened sense of well-being and space. On each side is a wide armrest with two deep, easily accessible
stowage bins, one of which can be closed. Rounding off the outstanding comfort at the rear are the loudspeakers mounted in the side panels. The model's spaciousness is reflected in impressive figures worthy of E-segment vehicles: elbowroom 1,220mm and kneeroom 250mm, while at 998mm, headroom is far superior to that of rival leisure vehicles. Rear passengers can conveniently slip their personal effects into the 24cm gap between the two seats. Passengers can access the rear seats in one of two ways.
The first is through the front doors, using a handle that folds down the back of the front seats and slides them out of the way. It is easier to get in on the passenger side, where the seat slides further forward than on the driver’s side. Passengers can also climb into the rear seats through the open tailgate and the gap between the rear seats, which affords ample space. Children will particularly enjoy climbing into the car in this way. Indeed tailgate access is facilitated by the low sill and bumper which can take weights of up to 100kg.

The tailgate incorporates a handle that can be used to pull it shut from the inside. Reassuringly for parents, however, it cannot be opened from the inside.
The rear of the car is fully modular. The capacity of the luggage compartment ranges from 174 to 1,462dm3 depending on whether the seats are in their rearmost or foremost position. Like Scénic, the rear seats can be folded and tipped forward with a built-in notching system to hold them in place. It is also extremely straightforward to remove one or both seats to free up additional carrying capacity. Luggage can then be placed either on them or in the space vacated by the seats, which are also easy to remove. Two side anchorage points help hold items in place when the car is moving. With the seats removed, maximum luggage space capacity is 1,462 dm3 (with the retention net in place).
When the rear window (operated by a driver’s side switch or a button on the ignition key) has slid away into the tailgate, the car can be loaded without opening the tailgate, e.g. when doing some quick shopping or if the car is too tightly parked to open the tailgate. Two hooks on the left of the luggage compartment are intended for hanging small bags. The tailgate has two open positions: an intermediary one for accessing the luggage compartment in a restricted space, and an 85° opening for full access to the luggage compartment. And with the glazed rear roof and tailgate window both open, Renault Kangoo be bop’s carrying capacity is further extended to take even more luggage or tall loads, while longer items can be attached to the luggage rail which is available as an accessory.

At home in town and country

At only 3.87 metres in length, Renault Kangoo be bop is perfectly at home in towns and cities. Its wheelbase is 38cm shorter than that of New Kangoo which permits a smaller turning circle. Renault Kangoo be bop can be turned round between kerbs just 9.7 metres apart, making it as agile as the most manoeuvrable city car.
Even so, Renault Kangoo be bop is always ready to head for the wide blue yonder, whisking off its occupants for a jaunt in the open air. Like New Kangoo, it benefits from Scénic’s chassis, which lends it dynamic performance qualities that are quite exceptional for such a compact vehicle.
Renault Kangoo be bop’s front and rear track, which are respectively 1.52m and 1.53m wide, make it remarkably stable. It shares Scénic’s suspension: MacPherson type with rectangular lower arm and anti-roll bar at the front and, a programmed deflection torsion beam with coil springs and anti-roll bar at the rear. The entire chassis is designed for cornering stability and reassuring handling. With its wide, 16-inch wheels it holds the road with precision, while the dimensions of its four vented brake discs (280mm at the front, 274mm at the rear) ensure prompt, efficient stopping power. A vehicle for leisure and pleasure, Renault Kangoo be bop is powered by engines that yield genuine driveability and which are robust, economical, and kind to the environment, including two diesel powerplants – the 85hp dCi and the 100hp dCi which comes with a particulate filter and drives through a six-speed gearbox – and the petrol 105hp 1.6 16V unit.

The dCi 85hp (63 kW), which delivers peak power at 3,750rpm, is particularly versatile. With 200Nm of torque available from 1,900rpm, it is equally at home in urban environments as it is on the open road. With this powerplant, Renault Kangoo be bop ensures a particularly impressive trade-off between equipment and performance and its combined cycle fuel consumption which stands at 5.3 litres/100km. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 140g/km, making Renault Kangoo be bop eligible for the Renault eco² signature. With the more powerful version of the 1.5 dCi, which also equips Clio, Modus, Mégane, Scénic and New Laguna, Renault Kangoo be bop benefits from maximum power of 105hp at 4,000rpm, as well as 240Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. Thanks to its second-generation common rail injection, variable geometry turbo and 1,600-bar injector pressure, this powerplant yields sprightly performance for combined cycle fuel consumption of just 5.4l/100km (142g of CO2/km) thanks to its piezoelectric injectors and six-speed manual gearbox. Noise is minimised thanks to a twin-mass flywheel damper which reduces boom at low engine revs.

On certain markets, the 105hp engine is available with a particulate filter which comes with a fifth injector on the exhaust line.
The 1.6 16V petrol engine develops 105hp at 5,750rpm and maximum torque of 148Nm at 3,750rpm. It delivers outstanding driveability and low combined cycle fuel consumption (7.7 litres/100km) thanks to the use of lightweight materials and a timing system with roller cam followers Whether on city streets or open country roads, occupants will be reassured by Renault Kangoo be bop's safety credentials, with active safety on a par with that of a family saloon. It is equipped with Bosch ABS incorporating electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist and automatic activation of hazard lights. Bosch ESC 8.0, combined with understeer control, comes as standard on Renault Kangoo.
ASR traction control and an engine torque overrun regulation function ensure the car is able to pull away and drive in conditions where grip is at a premium and also prevent wheel-lock in the event of sudden loss of traction on slippery surfaces. Numerous driver aid systems come as standard on Renault Kangoo be bop. These include cruise control with speed limiter, automatic headlamp and wiper activation and a rear parking proximity sensor. To enable occupants to travel in safety, Renault Kangoo be bop has inherited New Kangoo’s body structure, made of steel and materials that absorb and dissipate impact energy. Kangoo be bop’s front seatbelts are equipped with pyrotechnic pretensioners to hold occupants safely in place in the event of a collision. All seatbelts incorporate load limiters calibrated to optimise protection of the thorax. Renault Kangoo be bop is available with up to four airbags, two front airbags and two thorax airbags.

To reduce the risk of groin injury in the event of a head-on collision, the front seats are equipped with anti-submarining humps. Renault Kangoo be bop is also equipped with a retractable brake pedal to prevent injury to the driver’s ankle. As part of the ongoing quest for greater safety and comfort, Kangoo be bop's front seats and headrests are designed to absorb energy in the event of impact from the rear. Clio III debuted this technology, which has helped to considerably reduce whiplash injury. Headrests are adjusted to the right height by sliding them up and down their support struts and no longer by sliding the struts in and out of the seatbacks. To complete the passive safety picture, the front passenger seat and both rear seats are equipped with Isofix child seat anchorage. To qualify, vehicles must comply with three ecological and economical criteria :
  • CO2 emissions of less than 140g/km, or biofuel compatibility.
  • Production in an ISO-14001-certified factory.
  • They must be 95% recoverable by weight, while at least 5% of the plastics they contain must be sourced from recycling.
Renault Kangoo be bop is assembled at the ISO 14001-certified MCA Maubeuge plant in France, contains 7kg of recycled plastics (6% of its weight) and is 95% recoverable by weight (85% recyclable). Renault Kangoo be bop dCi 85 emits just 138g of CO2/km, making it perfectly eligible for the Renault eco² signature.

Nissan to release Japanese "KIX" Mini SUV in end-October

TOKYO : September 29, 2008 - The Nikkei reports that Isuzu Motors Ltd. is developing a series hybrid bus that it plans to commercialize in Japan in the first half of the 2010s.

The series hybrid system’s diesel engine can be made roughly 30% smaller than those used in conventional buses and maintains constant revolution regardless of vehicle speed. As a result, Isuzu’s bus delivers 30% better fuel economy than conventional diesel buses. The new system is also about 20% more fuel-efficient than the parallel hybrid system.

Isuzu plans to initially employ the new hybrid system for large buses 9 meters or longer and mid-size buses 7-9 meters in length. Further down the road, it aims to also use the technology in small and mid-size trucks. Isuzu plans to offer public transportation authorities and other potential customers test rides on its series hybrid buses as early as next year.

Isuzu currently offers a parallel diesel-electric hybrid system for its Elf trucks.

Engine hand-built by AMG

The powerful heart of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S is a supercharged 5.5-litre V8 engine which is hand-built in the Mercedes-AMG engine shop in Affalterbach. The special strengths of this high-performance engine include extraordinary responsiveness to movements of the accelerator, a high torque and an unmistakable V8 sound. Moreover, with an output of 478 kW/650 hp and 820 Nm of torque, power is on tap almost to excess (SLR McLaren Roadster: 460 kW/626 hp, 780 Nm). Accordingly the new model variant meets the wishes of the most discerning customers for even more sportiness combined with excellent day-to-day practicality.

The five-speed automatic transmission developed by Mercedes-Benz is designed for high performance. The spring and shock absorber configurations of the suspension are stiffer, and the body has been lowered by 10 millimetres at the front and rear. This ensures the greater handling stability of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S, with a significant improvement in handling dynamics. The lightweight, 19-inch forged aluminium wheels allow a view of the red-painted brake callipers on the highly-resistant carbon-fibre/ceramic brake discs, which make for impressive deceleration figures.

Sophisticated aerodynamics and a fabric soft top suited to high-speed driving

The outstanding qualities of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S are complemented by the fully recessible fabric soft top, which blends harmoniously into the flowing lines of the roadster. The weave structure of this high-tech roof material reflects the carbon-fibre look, guarantees full day-to-day suitability in any weather conditions and allows the vehicle a top speed of 335 km/h - a unusual figure for a roadster. Thanks to favourable aeroacoustics, conversation during open-air journeys is still possible at well over 200 km/h.

The soft top opens and closes semi-automatically in around ten seconds, combining comfort expectations with the purist nature of the roadster. For opening, the roof needs to be unlatched at the windscreen frame and lifted slightly, after which it folds down electrically. The front section of the soft top features an integral aluminium cap, which effectively prevents "ballooning" at high speeds.

The handling and aerodynamics of this high-end roadster were optimised for high speeds in the wind tunnel. The aerodynamic concept follows that of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Coupe, with an airbrake integrated into the boot lid, an enclosed underbody and a diffusor in the rear bumper to ensure the greatest possible downforce on the rear axle. The so-called airsplitter at the front end augments this downforce, while small wheel spoilers reduce turbulence at the rear axle. The result is precise handling and steering at high speeds.

Outstanding performance and safety thanks to carbon fibre technology

In technical terms the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S benefits from the long experience of Mercedes-Benz and its Formula-1 partner McLaren. With the exception of two aluminium frames, the body is completely of carbon-fibre materials (CFRP). This makes it highly exceptional among high-performance sports cars. Especially for the roadster, the sophisticated carbon-fibre technology was developed further for the monocoque. The result is low weight, exemplary energy absorption and therefore a high level of occupant safety, plus a torsional rigidity that is unprecedented for an open-top car. It allows outstanding handling characteristics that are otherwise only found in closed super-sports cars.

A high level of safety is provided by unique carbon-fibre crash structures, steel-reinforced A-pillars and two fixed rollover bars. Other safety features include adaptive airbags, knee and sidebags, belt tensioners and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

A thoroughly sporty appearance

The roadster has a crystal antimony grey paint finish, which highlights the sculptured look of this high-performance car particularly effectively. The carbon-fibre technology is visually complemented by the black, grid-like air vents on the bonnet and the front and rear light modules with palladium grey surrounds.

In the interior, outstanding lateral support is guaranteed by sports bucket seats upholstered in a combination of semi-aniline leather/Alcantara. Striking visual highlights are provided by the contrasting seams in Mercedes-Benz 300 SL red, the embossed 722 S lettering on the head restraints and the likewise red seat belts. Frequently used controls such as the shift and parking brake levers are lined in particularly high-grip and moisture-absorbing suede leather. In the interior too, the generous use of carbon-fibre underlines the high-performance philosophy and adds a particularly puristic touch.

The exclusive appointments include two-zone automatic climate control, a high-quality BOSE Premium sound system, a multifunction sports steering wheel with shift paddles and a navigation system with an integrated radio and CD player.

Sales of the NP200 compact pick up will start in South Africa on October 1st, 2008, to address the needs of both business users and private motorists looking for a practical work and leisure vehicle. It combines tough workhorse reliability and functionality in a distinctive package. With 800kg payload capacity, the largest in its class, the NP200 stands out as the sensible choice among its competitors. The vehicle also offers the largest and longest load body in its segment as well as the largest interior cabin space.

Nissan NP200

The NP200 will initially be launched with a 1.6 litre gasoline engine, developing a maximum power of 64kW/ 5,500rpm and a torque of 128Nm/ 3,000rpm. More variants are expected to be launched in 2009.

The NP200 is manufactured at Nissan's Rosslyn Plant north of Pretoria and will substitute the Bakkie, which has been available to South African customers for 37 years and has become an icon of functional mobility in the Country.

The QR25DE engine achieves improved output and fuel-efficiency through reduced friction. Torque and output are also enhanced throughout a wide speed range by enlarging the radius of intake and exhaust ports and an increased compression ratio.

Murano's Xtronic CVT includes a new Adaptive Shift Control (ASC), which controls the shift timing according to the driver's personal driving style and the driving environment in order to optimize both performance and fuel economy.

The AZ-Wagon micro-mini enjoys a wide-ranging customer base in Japan thanks to its outstanding use of space and functionality. Fully redesigned for the first time in five years, the new model further evolves these characteristics and offers substantially enhanced quality inside and out, as well as a more comfortable cabin.

The exterior design has been fully updated to improve the styling and reflect the interior comfort. The interior features a silver center panel, and charcoal grey seats and door trim which create a higher quality appearance. All-New Third Generation Honda City Designed for India

TOKYO : September 26, 2008 - Honda Motor Co., Japan's second- largest automaker, will delay opening its second car factory in India, as the pace of growth in the market slows.


Honda aims to open the plant in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan by October 2010 at the latest from its original schedule of 2009, Tokyo-based spokesman Sakae Uruma said by phone today. The engine parts and press units at the facility began operations today, the company said in a statement.

Higher auto loan rates and the fastest inflation in 16 years caused industrywide vehicle sales in India to fall in July and August, the first time in 2 1/2 years. General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and Ford Motor Co. are among carmakers spending $6 billion to build factories in India.

``Demand is going down in the near term,'' said Vaishali Jajoo, a Mumbai-based analyst at Angel Broking Ltd. ``Still, companies are looking at the long-term prospects in India and are setting up plants now to meet the demand in future.''

The delay was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Honda's car sales in India fell 14 percent to 19,058 between April and August, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The country's overall sales in the five months gained 6 percent to 491,538, half of last year's pace.

Growth Forecast

The grouping of all vehicle makers in the country last month cut its growth forecast for the year ending March 31 to 10 percent from as much as 13 percent saying inflation and higher rates are damping demand. Car sales may triple to 3 million by 2015, according to government estimates.

``For Honda, India is a very important market and our faith in India's growth story stays intact,'' the automaker's president Takeo Fukui said today at the site of the new factory. ``Our investment plans in India are on track.''

Tokyo-based Honda now produces the City, Civic and the Accord sedans from a factory near New Delhi. The company has so far invested 16.2 billion rupees ($349 million) in India, according to Honda India's Web site. The second plant, with an initial investment of 10 billion rupees, will raise Honda's annual production capacity to 160,000 vehicles by 2010, the company said today.

Honda's second factory will eventually raise capacity to 200,000 units per annum, the company said last year.

Honda is the fourth-largest carmaker in India this year, lagging behind Suzuki Motor Corp., Hyundai Motor Co. and Tata Motors Ltd. Honda had 3.9 percent of the market between April and August, according to the automakers' group.

SHANGHAI : September 29, 2008 - Sept. 29 - Nissan Motor Co., Japan's third- largest automaker, and a Chinese affiliate began constructing a 1 billion yuan ($146 million) factory to increase sales in the world's second-largest vehicle market.


The new plant, with a capacity of 120,000 vehicles a year, will begin operations in 2010, Kimiyasu Nakamura, president of venture Dongfeng Motor Co., said at a press conference in Zhengzhou today. Zhengzhou Nissan Automobile Co. will also debut at least five new Nissan and Dongfeng brand light-commercial vehicles by 2012, he added.

TOKYO : September 28, 2008 - Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's biggest carmaker, will cut production in China as sales slow in the country, the Nikkei newspaper reported.


The carmaker will reduce output of passenger cars by about 10 percent at its factory in Guangdong province, Nikkei said today, without saying where it obtained the information. Toyota will slow the pace of production for at least a few months, the newspaper said.

Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma couldn't be contacted immediately at his office or by mobile phone.

China's passenger car sales fell 6.2 percent in August, the first decline in more than three years, as the Beijing Olympics and a slumping stock market prompted drivers to delay purchases.

Sales may fall short of a forecast 10 million this year as slowing economic growth and a slumping stock market undermine consumers' purchasing power, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Toyota's local venture, will meet its 2008 sales target even as overall industry growth slumps, Feng Xingya, executive vice president of Guangzhou Toyota, said on Sept. 24.

The company, which almost tripled sales in 2007, targets a 24 percent increase to 210,000 cars this year.

Guangzhou Toyota's sales rose 4 percent in August to 13,781 to rank ninth among Chinese carmakers. The company had about 4 percent of China's car market last year.

Singapore GP Champion : Fernado Alonso

SINGAPORE : September 28, 2008 - Spain's Fernando Alonso snapped a year-long win drought to take the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, winning a drama-filled first ever night race as a comical error cost Felipe Massa dearly.


It was the Renault driver's first victory since the Italian Grand Prix last year and capped a remarkable weekend that saw him top two of the free practice sessions but start 15th on the grid after a mechanical problem in qualifying.

He claimed his 20th career triumph by 2.95 seconds over Germany's Nico Rosberg in a Williams and Britain's world championship leader Lewis Hamilton in third.

Toyota driver Timo Glock was fourth with Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel following up his win in Italy this month with fifth. BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld took sixth.

The race was a new experience for every driver on a street circuit under powerful spotlights and it turned out to be one of the most exciting of the season.

Despite dark clouds lurking, Singapore's notorious tropical downpours stayed away and the whole race was run in dry, but hot and humid conditions.

Ferrari's Massa started from pole but a disastrous mistake cost him the race and valuable points in his push for the world title.

His 13th place finish means he is now seven points behind Hamilton in the championship hunt with just three Grand Prix left at Japan, China and Brazil.

The Brazilian was in the pits on lap 15 when he was given the green light and drove off with the fuel hose still attached to his car, leaving one of the pit crew floored and subsequently carted off in a neck brace.

Massa ended up sitting in his Ferrari at the end of the pit lane as the crew ran after him and managed to pull the hose free, but it ruined his chances. He was given a drive through penalty and rejoined in 18th place.

It was a miserable night for Ferrari with defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen ramming his car into the barriers with just four laps to go, ending his race.

The Massa drama occurred after the cars came in when Nelson Piquet careered into the wall on the exit from turn 17, bouncing into the barriers on the other side of the track, causing massive damage to his Renault.

He climbed out unscathed but the safety car was deployed.

Massa was leading at the time with Hamilton second but at the restart, Rosberg was in front followed by Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella, with Robert Kubica fourth and Alonso fifth.

Hamilton was ninth, but Rosberg and Kubica were subsequestly slapped with a 10-second stop penalty for coming into the pits after the Piquet crash before it had opened.

The complicated scenario saw Toyota's Trulli in the lead on lap 28 but without having pitted with Alonso second, Rosberg third and Hamilton charging in sixth.

With Trulli taking his first pit stop soon after Alonso, who started from 15th on the grid, amazingly found himself in front just after the halfway mark with a 4.9 second lead over Rosberg.

Alonso came in for his second pit stop on lap 41 and came out still in the lead, marginally ahead of David Coulthard and Hamilton.

Remarkably, when Coulthard pitted soon after he too drove off with the fuel pipe attached, knocking over a mechanic who was stretchered off with an injured ankle, dropping the Scotsman to ninth.

There was more action to come.

Alonso was cruising with a 23 second lead when Adrian Sutil shunted his Force India into the wall, bringing the safety car out again and wiping out the Spaniard's advantage.

When they restarted with seven laps left it was a sprint to the finish and two-time world champion Alonso made no mistake, writing his name in the record books as the first winner of a Formula One night race

Ford announces KUGA performance style

COLOGNE : September 26, 2008 - In the wake of the Ford Mondeo, the S-MAX, Galaxy and the new Fiesta, Ford Kuga is also available with a distinctive and luxurious Ford Individual interior. The Ford Vehicle Personalization Tion Design Team has developed a luxurious interior that is available as an option. The interior is modeled on that of the iosis X Concept which first appeared in 2006 at the Paris Auto Salon.

Striking exterior


The Ford Vehicle Personalization Tion Design Team is also working on developing a unique exterior styling pack for the new Kuga. This styling pack will also be admired in Paris.

For the front seat and rear seat is elected for two types of very high quality leather. The seats and backrests are equipped with extra-filled sections that are carried out in Calf nappa soft side in the dark ebony color. On the upper portion of the seat back is the typical 'Individual' logo in block letters. The largest portion of the seat is finished in a somewhat rougher 'Bond'-learning in a matching color which provides a contrasting look of the seat surface.


The contrasting gray rush strengthen the expressive and kinetic chair design. The center console and the boomerang-shaped door handles are finished in glossy Piano White, a color that perfectly matches the leather upholstery and the White Electric sprayed exterior of the model will be demonstrated in Paris.

GM wants 100-mpg rating for '10 Volt

WASHINGTON : September 27, 2008 - Will the Volt break the 100 mpg barrier?

General Motors Corp. said Friday it has reached a preliminary agreement with the California Air Resources Board about how to classify its Chevy Volt in terms of emissions standards that could allow the extended-range electric vehicle to attain the 100-miles-per-gallon rating.


That's a significant step for the automaker because the actions of the California board, known as CARB, often influence federal regulatory decisions. GM has been in talks with CARB and the Environmental Protection Agency for more than a year on how to rate the Volt.

Achieving a 100-mpg rating would give GM a strong marketing message and boost its ability to comply with significantly higher fuel economy standards.

"The final number has a tremendous impact on educating consumers," said Robert Peterson, a GM spokesman, comparing it to the "four-minute mile."

GM plans to begin building the rechargeable Volt in November 2010 and says it will be able to travel up to 40 miles on electric power alone.

But determining the miles per gallon for a plug-in vehicle is completely different than testing an internal combustion engine.

CARB is in the process of rewriting its plug-in emissions testing procedures and plans a Dec. 11 public meeting to finalize them, said John Swanton, an air pollution specialist with CARB.

"We trying to make sure we have the proper yardstick to measure all plug-in vehicles," Swanton said. "We want to encourage innovation by all automakers."

EPA spokeswoman Catherine Milbourn said the agency cannot confirm an efficiency rating "for any plug-in hybrid electric vehicle since we're still developing policy for testing, measuring, and reporting fuel economy for this technology."

She said EPA hopes "to have a final policy soon" and will issue a public letter describing it.

Don Foley, the executive director of the $10 million Progressive Automotive X Prize -- a competition to find the first 100-mpg (or energy equivalent) vehicle -- said policy makers should move away from just looking at gasoline.

"Reliance on an mpg standard alone will soon be outdated and will not accurately reflect the need for higher fuel efficiency," he said, adding that there is a new "proposed unit of measure, MPGe -- miles per gallon or energy equivalent."

MPGe is a measure that expresses fuel economy in terms of the energy content of a gallon of gasoline, asking how much energy was delivered to the vehicle, and how far did it go, Foley said.

For GM, the Volt's propulsion will come from its lithium-ion battery and a small gasoline engine. The Detroit automaker said it has chosen its battery supplier but hasn't made it public. GM has been using technology from both Massachusetts-based A123 and Troy-based Compact Power Inc., a unit of the Korean LG Chem.

Prabhakar Pratil, CEO of Compact Power, said during a speech Friday to the Washington Automotive Press Association that even the company didn't know if it had won the contract. He said Compact needed to find out by year's end whether they would be selected.

GM's Peterson said "we don't have a signed contract" with either supplier but confirmed a deal would be completed by year's end.

"I'm going forward as if we were going to be selected, because to me the worst thing to fight will be time and we don't want to happen," Pratil said. "I need about 18 months lead time in order to set up the manufacturing facility and capability."

He said the Volt posed special issues. "We had to pack so much battery in the available space that there was no room for air flow and so that battery will be liquid cooled," Pratil said.

GM officially unveiled its production version of the Volt on Sept. 16 during the company's 100th anniversary celebration.
