Recognized by AutoPacific as the "ideal" compact SUV/off-road vehicle, Grand Vitara surpasses other SUVs in its size and price category in balancing off-road capability with the very real needs of a daily commute. The vehicle's surprising off-road performance is matched by an equally impressive interior, making the Grand Vitara the perfect choice for adventure-minded drivers seeking to confidently explore the outside world in comfort and style. The ultimate discovery vehicle, the Grand Vitara helps customers engage directly with their environment and their experiences.

For 2009, the rugged and award-winning Suzuki Grand Vitara, a true SUV in a segment of "soft-roaders," offers "brute-ute" owners the opportunity to resize for better fuel economy without settling for a "cute-ute" lacking full SUV capability. A standard, all-new four-cylinder engine provides drivers with better mileage, and a new, more powerful V6 delivers fuel economy better than the V6 it replaces.

A new grille and front bumper design accent the Grand Vitara's distinctive, chiseled-yet-elegant lines, with additional interior enhancements, including illuminated steering wheel controls, a sliding front center armrest, visor extenders, HVAC controls, upgraded audio system and updated cloth upholstery. As with all retail 2009 Suzuki automobiles and light trucks, the Grand Vitara is backed by America's #1 Warranty: a 100,000-mile/seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.

Performance and Functionality

The new Suzuki-developed 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 166 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of peak torque, delivering EPA fuel economy estimates of up to 19 mpg/city and 26 mpg/highway. Available for Grand Vitara XSport and Luxury models is a new 3.2-liter V6 engine with 230 horsepower and 213 lb.-ft. of torque, replacing the 2.7-liter V6 engine in last year's Grand Vitara that produced 185 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite an increase of 45 horsepower, the new V6 betters the old motor in fuel economy ratings. The new engine is also 20 percent cleaner than the 2008 model as measured by the State of California's smog index rating. The new V6 also features variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust camshafts, and both Grand Vitara engines use a zero-maintenance timing chain in place of a belt.

The Grand Vitara's new four-cylinder engine can be teamed to a standard five-speed manual transmission or a new four-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 is matched to a standard five-speed automatic transmission. To help fulfill their sense of adventure, customers can choose among RWD models, Single-Mode four-wheel drive or Four-Mode full-time four-wheel drive, a traction system unlike anything else offered in the segment. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) is standard for all Grand Vitara models, along with a new rollover sensor for the standard side curtain airbags. Enhancing performance on any road is a strengthened structure for 2009, plus rear disc brakes that replace the previous drums.

Suzuki Four-Mode four-wheel drive offers the best of both worlds: further aided by a completely retuned suspension, it is exceptionally capable off-road but is civilized on the asphalt. On pavement, drivers can leave the dash-mounted transfer case switch in 4H and the electronically controlled on-demand four-wheel-drive system will apply traction to the front wheels only as needed, optimizing economy. When traveling off-road, or for low-speed power and traction, drivers can turn the switch to high-range 4H Lock or low-range 4L Lock to engage the center differential lock. The V6 models with Four-Mode full-time four-wheel drive also feature Hill Descent Control and Hill Hold Control, which can enhance driving safety on steep slopes.

For RV owners, a Grand Vitara equipped with an automatic transmission or with the Four-Mode full-time four-wheel-drive system can also be flat-towed. Switching the transfer case control into the neutral position helps minimize driveline wear and prevent non-driving miles from accumulating on the odometer.

Built Like a Brute

The Suzuki Grand Vitara continues Suzuki's 40-year heritage of building compact but rugged SUV-type vehicles, including a model named "Brute." The current Grand Vitara has proven its durability in some of the toughest global markets. Key to the Grand Vitara's go-anywhere capability is its unibody construction with integrated ladder frame, rear-drive-based driveline and four-wheel independent suspension. Typically, only luxury SUVs offer this premium architecture. This type of construction yields the strength and capability sought in large SUVs, while providing the on-road agility and ride quality expected in a modern compact SUV.

Also separating the Grand Vitara from the "high wagons" in the segment is the availability of a Four-Mode full time four-wheel-drive system with two-speed transfer case. This hardware, combined with its rugged body construction, steep approach and departure angles, and 7.9 inches of ground clearance (4WD models), enables the Grand Vitara to keep going when the pavement turns to trail. In addition, the Grand Vitara's 3,000-lb. towing capacity (with V6) is double that of many car-based models and enough to haul light recreational boats, ATVs or motorcycles.

Safety

Beyond offering a strong-yet-weight-optimized structure, the unibody with built-in ladder frame contributes to collision protection in the Grand Vitara. The reinforced cabin has the added safety of head-impact protection pad and front and rear side-impact door beams.

Active safety (the ability to help avoid an accident) technology in every Grand Vitara model includes anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, tire pressure monitoring system and ESP with traction control. ESP helps ensure vehicle stability when cornering, under acceleration, during emergency maneuvers and when driving on slippery road surfaces. Taking input from a variety of sensors, ESP has the ability to apply individual brakes and reduce engine torque to help the driver maintain the desired line of travel.

Standard passive safety features in every Grand Vitara model include driver and front passenger seat-mounted side-impact airbag supplemental restraint systems (SRS), advanced dual-stage front airbag SRS, advanced weight-sensing front passenger airbag SRS and front and rear side-curtain airbags networked with a rollover sensor. The three-point driver and front passenger seat belts feature pretensioners and shoulder height adjustment. Each rear seating position is equipped with a three-point seatbelt and a headrest. Also provided is a rear child-seat LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children).

The Grand Vitara's safety engineering also reflects Suzuki's attention to pedestrian impacts demanded in many global markets. The front end and the bumper integrate energy-absorbing materials to help reduce the possibility of serious leg injuries. The hood is designed to absorb some of the impact and help protect against serious head injuries. These factors helped the 2009 Grand Vitara earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest rating of good in its most recent frontal crash protection test. In combination, these active and passive safety features make Grand Vitara one of the best-equipped compact SUVs with respect to safety.

The Look and Function of a Suzuki

To simplify and improve the driver experience, Suzuki offers easy-to-use features that add useful, real-world functionality to each vehicle. The Grand Vitara shows its Suzuki sensibilities in the simple, uncluttered design. Form follows function, with styling that does not compromise visibility, as it does in many crossover-type SUVs. Handsome good looks are part of the mix, too, along with SUV necessities, including short overhangs and roof rails. Exterior mirrors, door handles and bumpers are all color keyed.

The compact exterior footprint contains a roomy, comfortable and versatile cabin to take people and cargo on daily trips or extraordinary voyages. The Grand Vitara offers comfortable seating for five, including reclining rear seats, and 24.4 cu.-ft. of storage space with the rear seats up. Cargo space expands to 68.9 cu.-ft. with the 60/40 split-folding seatbacks folded. High-quality materials and attention to fit and finish should help make a driver accustomed to a large luxury SUV feel at home. Controls are easy to access and use, which anyone used to driving a large luxury SUV might find refreshing.

Four Trim Lines, Two Engines, Three Drivelines

The 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara four-cylinder model is offered in four trim levels: Base, Premium, XSport and Luxury. The base model is RWD only, but its list of standard equipment is far from basic and includes: air conditioning with automatic climate control and micron air filtration system, trip computer, power windows, mirrors and door locks, remote keyless entry, tilt steering wheel, automatic on/off headlamps, four-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3/XM Satellite Radio®-capable audio system and 16-inch wheels.

The Premium model (four-cylinder only) adds an available four-speed automatic transmission, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with illuminated audio controls, cruise control, privacy glass, full-size spare tire cover, cargo cover, and, when equipped with the optional Single-Mode four-wheel drive, heated exterior mirrors.

The XSport, available with RWD or Four-Mode four-wheel drive, adds function and luxury features, including power tilt-and-slide sunroof, the SmartPassTM keyless entry and start system, six-disc CD changer, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, roof rack rails and fog lamps. With the V6, XSport 4WD also gains Hill Descent Control and Hill Hold Control, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, eight-speaker audio system with subwoofer and center channel speaker and door-mounted courtesy lights. In addition, the XSport deletes the full-size spare tire cover and replaces the standard steel spare wheel with a handsome matching alloy for a strong SUV image.

The top-of-the-line Luxury builds on the XSport equipment and adds leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, eight-speaker audio with subwoofer and center channel speaker black wood grain trim accents and full-size spare tire cover (with steel spare). With the V6, the Grand Vitara Luxury trim line also receives 18-inch alloy wheels and a HomeLink® wireless control system. In all Grand Vitara models, standard and optional audio systems are XM Satellite Radio®-capable, and an accessory iPod® interface is available. A connected iPod® works seamlessly through the radio or the steering-wheel-integrated controls, with playlists and track information appearing on the audio display.

2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover
  • SX4 Crossover FWD offers the industry's first standard navigation on a vehicle under $16,000
  • America's most affordable all-wheel-drive vehicle enables exploration off the beaten path
  • Standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) on all 2009 SX4 Crossovers allows drivers to stay confident with SUV-like safety equipment
In 2009, the award-winning, economical, five-door Suzuki SX4 Crossover is America's most affordable all-wheel-drive vehicle for the third year in a row. The feature-packed SX4 Crossover, which provides the platform for Suzuki's World Rally Championship (WRC) effort, is the perfect expression of the Suzuki brand DNA: enjoyable to drive but admirably frugal; a compact footprint outside but roomy and versatile inside; easy to afford but equipped like a vehicle in a higher segment. Additional enhancements and revised option packages for the 2009 SX4 Crossover further accentuate Suzuki's reputation for developing fun-to-drive vehicles offering a surprising level of performance and amenities at a value-oriented price.

SX4 Crossover customers have a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with the vehicle's advanced and effective three-mode Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive (i-AWDTM) system costing a fraction of what an AWD system typically adds to the MSRP of comparable vehicles. Consistent with other Suzuki crossovers and SUVs, the 2009 SX4 Crossover receives standard ESP. The front-wheel-drive version of the 2009 SX4 Crossover also stakes out a small piece of automotive history as the first vehicle priced below $16,000 to include a standard fully integrated navigation system.

The internationally flavored five-door hatchback design makes the SX4 Crossover stand apart, while sporty chassis tuning and now-standard ESP help keep it on track through all kinds of driving conditions. Its high, in-command seating position gives the driver ease of entry and exit and combines with a low beltline for excellent all-around visibility, allowing drivers and passengers to experience the world around them.

Sensibly priced option packages add features that are commonly found in the small SUV and CUV segments, including SmartPassTM keyless entry and start, heated front seats and automatic climate control. As with all retail 2009 Suzuki automobiles and light trucks, the SX4 Crossover is backed by America's #1 Warranty: a 100,000-mile/seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.

New Navigation System Unlike Any Other

The SX4 Crossover front-wheel-drive variant breaks new ground as the only vehicle in its category to come with a standard, fully integrated navigation system. Referred to as the Suzuki TRIPTM (Travel, Real-time traffic, Information and Play), the SX4's navigation system is the result of a collaboration with Garmin. It utilizes Navteq® mapping software and comes preloaded with street maps that feature millions of points-of-interest, such as hotels, restaurants, gasoline stations, ATMs and Suzuki dealership locations throughout the country. The navigation unit includes a flip-up 4.3-inch touch-screen display and is fully integrated into the vehicle's audio system, which results in all navigation commands being channeled through the SX4's speakers.

An available upgraded Suzuki TRIPTM system also offers Bluetooth® hands-free calling technology and a number of available MSN Direct®-enabled features, including real-time traffic, weather forecasts, news reports, stock quotes, local event finder and a gas station finder capable of locating the lowest priced fuel in town.

Suzuki also added a bit of brand essence to the system, programming lifestyle-oriented destinations and landmarks identified with a Suzuki "Way of Life!" icon on the navigation screen. Locations include hip music venues, popular surf spots, interesting road trip attractions and other activity-focused destinations. A Travel GuideTM expansion module also is available that provides Fodor reviews and recommendations for restaurants, hotels, shopping, nightlife, sporting events and other tourist attractions.

Powertrain: Robust, Responsive and Ready

Suzuki's confidence in its extended powertrain warranty is rooted in a long heritage of engineering for performance and durability. Consider the SX4 engine's construction: aluminum cylinder block and head, chain-driven double overhead camshafts, a forged steel crankshaft, aluminum pistons on drop-forged connecting rods, a high 10.5:1 compression ratio, a resin intake manifold and variable induction system.

A sophisticated Suzuki-developed 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC engine powers the SX4 Crossover, producing 143 horsepower and 136 lb.-ft. of torque and providing a pleasantly eye-opening driving experience. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a specially tuned four-speed automatic transmission is available. The front-wheel-drive 2009 SX4 Crossover with automatic transmission returns EPA fuel economy estimates of 22 mpg/city and 30 mpg/highway, and the go-anywhere, weather-proof, all-wheel-drive version of the vehicle delivers 21 mpg/city and 28 mpg/highway.

Dynamic Handling and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive

A rigid steel unibody with reinforced suspension mounts allows for crisp handling with excellent highway stability and minimal body roll in the SX4 Crossover. Standard 16-inch alloy wheels and large four-wheel disc brakes help ensure optimal grip and stopping performance.

Engineered from concept to be all-wheel-drive capable, the SX4 Crossover with Suzuki's three-mode i-AWD system evokes and promotes a natural sense of heartfelt enthusiasm that springs spontaneously from the heart and the gut. The i-AWD system employs an electronically controlled coupling device mounted in front of the rear differential. The driver uses a console switch to choose the best mode for the driving situation. The 2WD mode dedicates power to the front wheels for optimum fuel economy in high-traction conditions. In AWD Auto mode, up to 50 percent of torque is automatically apportioned to the rear wheels when pronounced front wheel slippage occurs. The AWD Lock setting sends 30-50 percent of torque as needed to the rear wheels for optimum traction in slippery conditions. The system automatically switches back from AWD Lock to AWD Auto mode at speeds above 36 mph.

Built for Safety

Active class-leading safety features in the SX4 Crossover include the newly standard ESP with traction control, daytime running lights, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system and electronic brake-force distribution and a tire pressure monitoring system. Together with the traction control system, ESP helps ensure vehicle stability when cornering, accelerating, driving on slippery road conditions or conducting emergency maneuvers.

Passive safety starts with a reinforced body with front and rear crumple zones designed to help absorb impact energy. Six airbags are standard, including driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags designed to provide additional protection for outboard front- and rear-seat passengers. Front three-point seatbelts with pretensioners integrate force limiters.

The SX4 Crossover also is equipped with ISO FIX-compliant child seat anchors and the LATCH system (Lower Anchor and Tethers for Children). Together, all of this safety equipment makes the SX4 Crossover one of the best-equipped vehicles in its class with respect to safety.

The Italian Side of the Family

Suzuki worked with legendary Italian design house Italdesign to make the SX4 Crossover distinctive yet functional. The fresh design expresses a bold attitude that appeals to buyers seeking a small car that stands apart without resorting to cliche'd styling elements. The low, rising beltline and triangular windows adjacent to the A-pillar give the SX4 Crossover a distinct wedge profile. Front and rear silver bumper cover plates, black fender flare moldings, roof rails, a wide track and strong fender design convey traction and agility. An array of more than 50 Suzuki accessories allows customers to personalize the SX4 Crossover and enhance its utility.

Controls in the SX4 Crossover are refreshingly straightforward in an age when some carmakers are adding needless complexity. The center panel's large, circular controls are flanked by aluminum-colored trim. Drivers have a clear view of the gauges that seem to float as they are backlit by contemporary, high-tech red lighting.

The SX4 Crossover's efficiently designed interior provides comfort for five, with generous front and rear legroom and shoulder room, freeing the driver and passengers to enjoy the ride. Rear-seat passengers enjoy nearly 36 inches of legroom and 37.6 inches of headroom, on par with some midsize sedans. Wide door openings allow easy access, and raised theater-style seating enhances the roomy, airy feeling for the rear passengers. Luggage room is an impressive 10 cu.-ft. and increases to 54 cu.-ft. with the standard rear 60/40 split-folding seats folded. The second-row seats also can tumble forward for maximum cargo capacity. Storage compartments are located throughout the cabin and all the doors feature large pockets and bottle holders.

Trim Levels and Packages

The SX4 Crossover is one of the best-equipped vehicles in the segment, inviting comparison with small SUVs and CUVs costing far more. Standard features include power windows, locks and mirrors, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 XM Satellite Radio®-ready audio system, tilt steering wheel, 16-inch alloy wheels, trip computer, fender flares, and roof rails. In addition, the front-wheel-drive version of the SX4 Crossover model comes equipped with an integrated navigation system as standard equipment.

The Technology package adds cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with steering-wheel-integrated audio controls and an upgraded navigation system.

The Touring package (available on AWD models only) adds automatic climate control, SmartPassTM keyless entry and start system, heated side mirrors, six-disc in-dash CD changer and premium audio system with nine speakers (including subwoofer) and heated front seats, a rarity among compacts. A rear spoiler, fog lamps and aluminum color roof rails distinguish a Touring package exterior.

Both the standard and optional audio systems are XM Satellite Radio-capable, and an accessory iPod® interface is available. A connected iPod works seamlessly through the radio and the steering-wheel-integrated controls, with playlists and track information appearing on the audio display.

2009 Suzuki SX4 Sport
  • Industry-first, touch-screen navigation system enables exploration, real-time connectivity
  • SX4 Sport beats competition in standard equipment, rear legroom and trunk room
  • SX4 Sport's performance and handling reflect Suzuki's exuberant brand spirit, backed by the confidence of America's #1 Warranty
Having appeared on several prestigious automotive industry lists in 2008, including Kelley Blue Book's "Top 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000," and after receiving several awards, including a Ward's Automotive "Interior of the Year" prize, the SX4 Sport quickly became a must-have vehicle in the compact segment.

Now in its second model year, the SX4 Sport offers buyers even more value and freedom, adding a fully integrated standard navigation system, marking the first time a vehicle priced below $16,000 will include navigation as standard equipment. Other 2009 enhancements that add purposeful, real-world functionality include a driver and passenger armrest and split-folding rear seats. Automatic climate control, heated door mirrors and fog lamps also are included in the SX4 Sport's Touring package. Suzuki is extending the SX4 family offerings with the new SX4 Sedan, the entry version of the four-door SX4 Sport. As with all retail 2009 Suzuki automobiles and light trucks, the SX4 Sport is backed by America's #1 Warranty: a 100,000-mile/seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.

New Navigation System Unlike Any Other

Enhancing the lives of people who live life like they really mean it, the SX4 Sport adds a fully integrated standard navigation system for the 2009 model year.

The navigation unit includes a removable flip-up 4.3-inch touch screen display and is fully integrated into the vehicle's audio system, which results in all navigation commands being channeled through the SX4's speakers.

An available upgraded Suzuki TRIP system also offers Bluetooth® hands-free calling technology, on-screen and audible text messaging and a number of available MSN Direct®-enabled features, including real-time traffic, weather forecasts, news reports, stock quotes, local event listings and a gas station finder capable of locating the lowest priced fuel in town.

Powertrain: "Sport" is Built-In

Built in Japan, the Suzuki SX4 Sport lives up to the "sport" in its name with a sophisticated 143-horsepower 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, a more powerful standard engine than segment volume leaders. Customers can choose between a standard five-speed manual transmission or an available specially-tuned four-speed automatic transmission. The SX4 Sport returns city/highway EPA fuel economy estimates ranging from 22/29 mpg for the SX4 Sport (MT), to 22/30 mpg for the SX4 Sport (AT) and Sedan (MT), and up to 23/31 for the SX4 Sedan (AT).

The use of regular-grade fuel might come as a surprise given the engine's high-performance credentials: an aluminum cylinder block and head, double overhead camshafts, a forged steel crankshaft, aluminum pistons on drop-forged connecting rods, a 10.5:1 compression ratio, a resin intake manifold and a variable induction system. Additionally, the camshafts are chain-driven, rather than using a belt, which reduces maintenance costs and enhances durability.

Road Manners Honed in Europe

A rigid steel unibody with reinforced suspension mounts allows tuning for crisp handling with excellent highway stability and minimal body roll in the SX4 Sport. Refined in Europe, the sport-tuned suspension with a 10-mm (0.4-in.) lower ride height than SX4 Crossovers, KYB performance shocks and standard stabilizer bars, delivers dynamic, responsive handling. The combination of a wide track and large 17-inch wheels with low-profile 50 Series tires also helps optimize the ride and handling balance, while adding to the vehicle's dynamic personality.

Big Safety Package

Active safety technology in the SX4 Sport includes daytime running lights, four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution and a tire pressure monitoring system. The available Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) with traction control works to help vehicle stability when cornering, under acceleration, during emergency maneuvers and when driving on slippery road surfaces. It is available on the SX4 Sport with Touring package.

Passive safety starts with a reinforced body with front and rear crumple zones designed to help absorb impact energy and direct it away from the reinforced cabin. Six airbags are standard: driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags and front seat-mounted side-impact airbags; and side curtain airbags designed to help provide additional protection for front and outboard rear-seat passengers. Front three-point seatbelts with pre-tensioners integrate force limiters. The SX4 Sport also is equipped with ISO FIX-compliant child seat anchors and the LATCH system (Lower Anchor and Tethers for Children) for all three rear seat positions. In combination, these active and passive safety features make the SX4 one of the best-equipped cars in its class when it comes to safety.

Head-turning Stance

The SX4 Sport exudes a bold, road-hungry stance. A large Suzuki "S" over the honeycomb mesh grille proudly conveys the brand's dynamic spirit. The low, rising beltline and triangular windows adjacent to the A-pillar give the SX4 Sport a distinct wedge profile, while the wide track, standard 17-inch alloy wheels and flared fenders accentuate the car's well-tuned underpinnings.

Functional Interior

Large cabin proportions reward SX4 Sport drivers and passengers with comfort and roominess that belie the car's compact dimensions. The driver sits higher than in other compacts for a better view of the road, which is further enhanced by the car's low cowl and glass line -- giving drivers a real sense of control and stress-free driving. Raised "theater-style" seating for rear passengers, combined with rear legroom of 35.8 inches and class-leading rear headroom make riding in the back seat a pleasure rather than a punishment. The SX4 Sport also offers substantially more trunk space than segment leaders to facilitate active, independent lifestyles. For adventure-seekers looking to stow their gear, the versatility of the SX4 Sport's 15.5 cu.-ft. trunk is enhanced for 2009 with a standard 60/40-split fold-down rear seat. Storage compartments are located throughout the cabin, including large pockets and bottle holders in all the doors.

Controls in the Suzuki SX4 Sport are refreshingly easy to use in an age when some carmakers are adding needless complexity. Drivers have a clear view of gauges that seem to float while backlit by contemporary, high-tech red lighting. The center panel's large, circular controls are flanked by aluminum-colored trim.

Trim Levels and Packages that Make Sense

The Suzuki SX4 Sedan and SX4 Sport are some of the best-equipped compact cars in America, with more standard features than cars costing significantly more.

For entry buyers, the SX4 Sedan LE offers a comprehensive list of standard safety and convenience features, including air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, tilt steering wheel, power windows, locks and mirrors, trip computer and 60/40-split fold-down rear seat.

The SX4 Sport and SX4 Sport with Technology package share the same content as the SX4 Sedan LE, and add the fully integrated standard navigation system, Aero body kit, 17-inch wheels and remote keyless entry.

Additional amenities on the SX4 Sport with Technology package include fog lamps, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls and navigation system with MSN and Bluetooth. The comprehensive Touring package (SX4 Sport only) adds automatic climate control, a six-disc CD player, upgraded audio system with nine speakers (including subwoofer), ESP with traction control, SmartPassTM keyless entry and start system and heated exterior mirrors.

Both the standard and upgraded audio systems are XM Satellite Radio®-capable and an accessory iPod® interface is available. A connected iPod works seamlessly through the radio or the steering-wheel-integrated controls, with playlists and track information appearing on the audio display.

2009 Suzuki XL7

  • Mid-size crossover delivers style, safety, spirited performance and improved fuel economy
  • Family-adventure-ready with standard three-row, seven-passenger seating
  • Travel in complete confidence with the proven safety of a quadruple five-star rating from NHTSA in 2008 and America's #1 Warranty
Suzuki's distinctively styled XL7 midsize crossover offers the perfect combination of size, style, power and flexibility, which is why the vehicle was named the top-ranked premium midsize crossover in AutoPacific's 2008 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards. On top of the vehicle's robust capabilities and premium amenities, the XL7 also is recognized as a segment leader in safety, having received a quadruple five-star rating from NHTSA for driver and front passenger frontal impact, and front and rear outboard passengers side impact.

For 2009, Suzuki boosts mpg numbers for the XL7, offering a more efficient six-speed automatic transmission. With standard spacious seven-passenger seating and extensive cargo space in a tidy exterior package, the right-sized XL7 is the ideal vehicle for an adventure with a group of friends or a vacation with the family. As with all retail 2009 Suzuki automobiles and light trucks, the XL7 is backed by America's #1 Warranty: a 100,000-mile/ seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.

Powerful V6 Delivers the Goods

The Suzuki XL7's 3.6-liter, V6, 24-valve engine delivers 252 horsepower and 243 lb.-ft. of torque for outstanding everyday performance and driving enjoyment. Assembled by Suzuki in Japan, this modern V6 applies many advanced engine technologies, including state-of-the-art casting processes and variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts. A double-isolated engine cradle system ensures quiet operation, while a stainless steel, true dual exhaust system projects a sporty tone.

Power is transmitted via the XL7's new six-speed automatic with manumatic shift, which is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The new engine improves fuel economy upwards of 10 percent compared to last year's model for the front-wheel-drive XL7 with EPA estimates of 17/24 mpg for city/highway and upwards of five percent for the all-wheel-drive variant with EPA estimates of 16/23 mpg city/highway. With a towing capacity rated at 3,500 pounds, the capable XL7 also can tow a variety of toys, including Suzuki's own ATVs, motorcycles or personal watercraft.

The available electronically controlled on-demand all-wheel-drive system delivers power to the front wheels during normal driving on dry road surfaces. Should the front wheels slip due to low traction conditions, up to 50 percent of available torque can be automatically delivered to the rear wheels.

In the Safety Zone

Demonstrating the XL7's perfect balance of form and function, occupant safety in the rugged vehicle is rooted in its high-strength steel unibody construction, which incorporates full-length frame rails and a reinforced safety cage around the passenger cabin. Front and rear crumple zones absorb crash energy to help preserve the integrity of the safety cage. Passive safety features include driver and front-passenger advanced airbags and side-curtain airbags, three-point seatbelts with load limiters in all passenger seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners and the LATCH system (Lower Anchor and Tethers for Children).

To improve and simplify the driver experience, Suzuki vehicles feature state-of-the-art technology that is useful and intuitive. A rear-vision display, available on XL7 Limited models, provides a view of what is behind the vehicle in a spot the driver naturally looks toward, the rearview mirror. When the vehicle is in Reverse, an otherwise-invisible display screen on the left side of the mirror shows the view behind the vehicle. The driver can thus keep his/her eyes on the natural high points, the rearview mirror, the front windshield and over the shoulder rather than down at rearview screen on the center console. When the car is in Park or Drive, the rearview display disappears.

Advanced Chassis Design

The Suzuki XL7's chassis specs read like those of a sport sedan. A specially tuned four-wheel independent suspension provides a car-like ride and responsiveness. Unique in the segment, the multilink independent rear suspension is fitted with Nivomat® load-leveling shock absorbers, which can substantially improve driving stability and comfort in a heavily loaded vehicle. Maintaining rear ride height helps keep the front wheels properly loaded, resulting in more stable handling, optimal comfort and driving confidence. Additionally, the Nivomat suspension is compact, with all elements integrated into the dampers, and the power needed to affect ride height is actually generated by the vehicle's vertical movement.

The 2009 Suzuki XL7 stops as well as it drives, thanks to standard four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system and electronic brake-force distribution. The standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) with traction control can help ensure vehicle stability when cornering, under acceleration, during emergency maneuvers and when driving on slippery road surfaces. A standard rollover sensor monitors the vehicle's angle and rate of roll on a flat road surface and engages ESP to control lateral forces acting on the vehicle, while the standard tire pressure monitoring system reports the status of each tire individually.

The Look of Suzuki

With the XL7, Suzuki proves that safety and security need not be wrapped in a boring box. The XL7 uniquely projects Suzuki style with a three-bar grille framed by multi-reflector, jewel-like headlamps and the prominent Suzuki "S" on the grille. An aggressively raked windshield yields favorable aerodynamics for quiet highway cruising and fuel efficiency while accentuating the feeling of spaciousness in the cabin. Flared wheel wells, similar to those fitted on the more off-road-oriented Suzuki Grand Vitara, lend a rugged look to the XL7's exterior.

Plush and Roomy for the Whole Team

In terms of comfort, the Suzuki XL7's refined interior is more like that of a sophisticated sedan than an SUV. Leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard on Luxury and Limited models. Additionally, Limited models include a standard remote start system that operates from as far as 200 feet. It starts the vehicle and engages the climate control system.

The XL7 features a roomy interior that rivals larger SUVs. The third-row seat offers usable room and comfort, even for adults, thanks in large part to the six-inch deep footwell. Legroom is generous at 41.2 inches, 38.8 inches and 30.9 inches in the first, second and third rows, respectively.

Delivering a versatile package that simplifies the needs of drivers' multi-faceted weekday routines and weekend adventures, the XL7's total cargo volume is substantial at 95.2 cu.-ft. The reclining 60/40 split-folding second-row seat tumbles and folds, and the 50/50 split-folding third-row seat can be folded flat into the floor for additional cargo carrying room. The fold-flat front-passenger seat allows room for longer items (up to 9.5 feet) such as ladders, surfboards or even a small kayak. The XL7 also offers rear cargo under floor storage, and the vehicle's under cabin spare tire area is equipped with a hoist system.

Trim Levels that Make Sense

With three simple models, Suzuki makes it easy for customers to choose an XL7. Each model is available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and offers a pleasantly surprising level of premium amenities, eliminating the need to sort through a complex matrix of options and packages to arrive at the ideal model.

The XL7 skips "base" and goes right to Premium. It packs a potent standard equipment list, including air conditioning with automatic climate control, rear air conditioning with separate HVAC controls, AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers, remote keyless entry, power windows, locks and mirrors, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, trip computer with driver information center, auto on/off headlamps, roof rails, 16-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, overhead storage compartment and alarm with engine immobilizer.

The XL7 Luxury with front-wheel drive, adds a leather-appointed interior, six-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, power tilt-and-slide sunroof and a six-disc in-dash CD changer with MP3 capability. Heated exterior mirrors also are included on AWD models.

To make travel and exploration a pleasure, the Limited model adds a touch-screen DVD navigation system, remote engine start, premium Pioneer audio system with seven speakers (including subwoofer), fog lamps, 17-inch chrome wheels, chrome door handles, an upgraded roof rack with silver-colored rails and a rear spoiler. To make long trips more enjoyable, the DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones is an available option in lieu of the sunroof. With all of this equipment, the XL7 Limited compares in price to some competitors' base models.

All new Suzuki EQUATOR
  • 2009 Suzuki Equator is brand's first midsize pickup
  • Up to 6,500-lb. towing capacity in a sensibly sized truck
  • Best-backed pickup in America, with America's #1 Warranty
To bolster its versatile and dynamic product line, enhance the company's bold and adventurous identity and empower customers to confidently explore the world, Suzuki introduces the all-new 2009 Equator, marking Suzuki's first entry into the midsize pickup truck market. The new Equator offers a well-rounded combination of style, utility, comfort and off-road capability, which truck buyers - many of whom are current Suzuki motorcycle, A TV and marine owners and loyalists - demand and enjoy.

Developed as a joint effort with Nissan North America, Inc., the 2009 Equator is available in both Extended Cab and Crew Cab body styles and rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations. To accommodate loads ranging from ATVs to motorcycles, Suzuki offers Crew Cab variants in both Short Bed and Long Bed configurations. Equator also incorporates class-leading standard safety features into the truck, including roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental airbags and seat-mounted side-impact supplemental airbags. As with all retail 2009 Suzuki automobiles and light trucks, the Equator, the latest addition to a product lineup poised for unique discoveries, is backed by America's #1 Warranty: a 100,000-mile/seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.

Power and Traction to the People

Built at Nissan's manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tenn., the 2009 Equator offers a standard 2.5-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine with 152 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque or an available 4.0-liter, V6 DOHC engine producing an unbeatable 261 horsepower with 281 lb.-ft. of torque. Designed for outstanding performance and durability, the Equator's V6 engine features an aluminum block with cast iron cylinder liners, Teflon?-coated pistons, micro-finished forged steel crankshaft, micro-finished camshafts driven by a silent two-stage timing chain and variable valve timing.

The Equator comes equipped with either a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission or five-speed manual transmission available only on four-cylinder models, and offers an available shift-on-the-fly 4WD system that features an electronically controlled part-time two-speed transfer case. For enhanced off-road capability, the rugged Equator offers a comprehensive off-road traction system, including four-wheel active limited slip traction control, electronic locking rear differential, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Hill Descent Control and Hill Hold Control.

Big Truck Capability in a Smart-Sized Package

The Equator's right-sized packaging suits the diverse needs of many pickup truck customers. Though smaller than the full-sizers, the Equator is nevertheless built with big-truck toughness. The strong, fully boxed frame is constructed of high tensile strength steel, which is stronger and lighter than conventional steel.

The Equator's long 125.9-inch wheelbase (Extended Cab or Crew Cab/standard bed) enhances driving stability and comfort, while its overall length of 206.6 inches (Extended Cab or Crew Cab/standard bed) provides the perfect balance of utility, maneuverability and composure for a pickup truck. Its all-steel double-wishbone front suspension balances rugged capability with everyday driving comfort. In the rear, a proven solid axle configuration uses overslung leaf springs and a long suspension travel for the best combination of on- and off-road dynamics and carrying ability. Moreover, the go-anywhere Equator has all the qualifications to enhance a customer's weekend adventures with a maximum towing capacity rated at 6,500 pounds (V6 2WD Sport Package) to haul Suzuki motorcycles, ATVs and even a boat with a Suzuki engine.

Other Equator chassis features include engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering for responsiveness and good on-center feel and standard four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system and electronic brake-force distribution for optimal stopping performance in all conditions. Equator also features a variety of available wheel and tire packages, including 16-inch off-road-style wheels with BFGoodrich rugged trail P265/75R16 tires and 17-inch wheels with BFGoodrich long trail P265/65R17 tires.

Rugged Style

The all-new Equator features a contemporary exterior design with a number of unique Suzuki elements, including hood, front fenders, grille, bumpers, front fascia and tailgate. A large Suzuki "S" over the honeycomb mesh grille proudly conveys Suzuki's dynamic spirit.

Both Extended Cab and Crew Cab models offer an available high-utility bed that includes a factory-applied spray-on bedliner and an innovative tie-down system with adjustable tracks, extending cargo-hauling versatility for active and spontaneous lifestyles. The tie-down system employs five special "C" cross-section rails mounted in the bed (two channels in the bed floor and one each on the bed side rails and the bed header panel). Removable utility cleats slide into the channels, providing a wide range of attachment points for securing cargo. A full range of accessories are available for use with the channel system, along with specialized bed accessories that make securing and transporting a motorcycle or ATV easier than in many competitive trucks.

Comfort Where Expected

The Equator's interior strikes a balance between pickup truck function and quality sedan comfort, with both Extended Cab and Crew Cab body styles featuring flip-up rear seats, a fold-flat front passenger seat and removable storage boxes tucked beneath the rear seats to provide additional cargo capacity. Additional convenience features include a dual glove box with lock and center console storage with power outlet. A number of power points and cupholders, including one-liter bottle storage in the front doors, are standard throughout the truck. The Premium, Sport and RMZ-4 packages include standard cruise control, power mirrors, door locks and windows and remote keyless entry.

Equator Crew Cab RMZ-4 with the Sport package offers a factory-installed moonroof. The bed extender increases cargo room, and off-road capability is enhanced with the addition of Vehicle Dynamic Control, Hill Descent Control and Hill Hold Control. On the inside, the Sport package adds a Rockford-Fosgate? AM/FM/6CD/XM Satellite Radio with eight high-performance speakers and subwoofer, an auxiliary input jack and Bluetooth capability. Bluetooth and audio controls are located on the steering wheel so drivers can keep their eyes on the road or the trail.

Safety Where Needed

The all-new Equator includes a comprehensive list of standard safety equipment with front and rear crumple zones, dual-stage front supplemental airbags with seat belt sensors and a front occupant classification sensor, three-point front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters and tire pressure monitoring system.

All Equator models come equipped with supplemental front seat side-impact airbags and supplemental curtain airbags for side impact and rollover protection for front and rear outboard passengers. Additionally, Extended Cab and Crew Cab models provide three-point seat belts for all rear-seat occupants, including the center position for the Crew Cab. The LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) child seat anchor system is provided in the rear seat of the Crew Cab model.

Choices, Choices, Choices

Pickup truck buyers traditionally demand a wide array of vehicle configurations and powertrain/driveline choices to meet the needs of their multi-faceted daily routines and action-packed lifestyles. Equator Extended Cab models are available with a four-cylinder engine and 2WD in Base and Premium trim lines, with Base receiving a five-speed manual transmission and Premium a five-speed automatic, plus additional amenities. The Sport trim line combines the 4.0-liter V6 with five-speed automatic transmission and either 2WD or 4WD and adds a number of additional features and amenities.

The Equator Crew Cab offers three trim lines, all powered by the V6 with five-speed automatic transmission. The Crew Cab Base model is 2WD, while the Sport offers the choice of 2WD or 4WD. For off-road enthusiasts with a "confident explorer" attitude and a thirst for new experiences, Suzuki offers an RMZ-4 equipped version of the all-new Equator. A name synonymous with Suzuki's class-leading motocross bikes, and based on the Equator RMZ-4 concept first shown at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, the RMZ-4 production model comes ready to kick sand or get muddy, fully equipped with Dana 44 axles, electric rear locking differential, Bilstein high-performance shocks, skid plates and BFGoodrich Rugged Trail P265/75R16 tires. Fog lamps, chrome mirrors and door handles and a bed extender to accommodate motorcycles enhance the outside, while unique RMZ-4 seat material with red stitching, chrome instrument cluster and vent trim, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel further dress up the interior.

9th round champion : Paul Di Resta

BARCELONA, Spain : September 21, 2008 - The battle for the DTM title is entering its decisive stage and could hardly be more thrilling.

9th round of the DTM at Barcelona

The main rival of points' leader Timo Scheider (Audi), Scotsman Paul di Resta, claimed victory in Barcelona. German driver Scheider ended up second and now is only seven points ahead of di Resta. "I was having a great fight with Timo. At some parts of the circuit, he was faster, but at other parts, I was", said 22-year old di Resta after his second win of the season. Third place was taken by DTM record champion Bernd Schneider. The two drivers with year-old Audis, Mike Rockenfeller and Alexandre Pre'mat, landed a big surprise by finishing fifth and sixth behind their fellow Audi driver Martin Tomczyk. British Mercedes-Benz driver Jamie Green, who was second in the drivers' standings, tied on points with di Resta, came home seventh. He is now 15 points down on the leader. With his AMG Mercedes C-Class, Ralf Schumacher again achieved a points' scoring finish by coming home eighth. The German had reached the same position at the Nu"rburgring.

For Bernd Schneider, the joy about his 25th pole position and the first one since Zandvoort in 2005 didn't last long. At the start already, Scheider and di Resta managed to overtake the 44-year old and started a thrilling duel. On lap 19, di Resta overtook the points' leader and managed to pull a slight gap that he didn't lose anymore until the chequered flag was out. Rockenfeller also had a very good start and made up two places, moving up into fifth. Eventually, he drove this result home. Further down the order, some duels were too hard. Going into the final lap of the race, reigning DTM champion Mattias Ekstro"m (Audi) from Sweden was sixth. He became involved in a battle with Mercedes-Benz driver Green, who was in front of him. The duel ended with a collision. The stewards of the meeting saw the Swede at fault and gave him a 50 seconds' time penalty. For Ekstro"m, this meant ninth place, no points and, 18 points down, only mathematical chances of defending his title.

No. 4 DI RESTA, Paul - AMG Mercedes - AMG Mercedes C-Klasse 2008

Driver comments :

Paul di Resta (winner, AMG Mercedes): "Today, I probably had the fastest car in the field. I had a great fight with Timo Scheider. At some parts of the track, he was faster, but at other parts, I was. The overtaking manoeuvre was absolutely clean and Timo played along perfectly. I knew that I would have to be very close to him all the time in order to being able to start an attack at all. But it was also my goal to avoid too many risks as I didn't want to drop back in the points' standings. There are still two races remaining, we will see what we can do."

Timo Scheider (2nd place, Audi Sport Team Abt): "I am not at all disappointed with second place. My start was good and I was able to overtake Bernd Schneider before the first corner. After that, Paul di Resta put me under quite some pressure. He was a little bit faster and made good use of a slight gap. Being on the podium today was our goal. There are still 20 points at stake. Anyone who knows the DTM also knows that everything is still possible, even though we remain in front."

Bernd Schneider (3rd place, Original-Teile AMG Mercedes): "Unfortunately, I had wheelspin at the start and therefore really had to battle for third place in the first corner. I couldn't really keep up with Paul di Resta and Timo Scheider out in front. I had hoped to be able to fight with Timo for second place. But unfortunately, we had a slight problem during the pit stop which cost us some time. After that, I could work with my tyres quite well and I was running pretty much on my own. For a man of my age, it is quite comfortable not having somebody right behind me all the time.
