The Ibiza range grows with addition of the CUPRA and ECOMOTIVE at the upcoming Paris Motor Show

SEAT Ibiza Cupra

  • 180 hp 1.4 TSI twin-turbo engine for the CUPRA
  • 7-speed DSG gearbox with steering wheel shift-paddles
  • Ibiza ECOMOTIVE, only 99 g/km of CO2
MARTORELL : August 29, 2008 - Less than six months after its launch, the new Ibiza range has expanded with the arrival of two new versions that combine distinct sports character with the commitment to environmental sustainability. In the first, innovative design and technology join character and exclusivity in the Ibiza CUPRA, a vehicle whose adrenaline rush is provided by the 180 hp 1.4 TSI twin-turbo engine and the 7-speed DSG gearbox with steering wheel shift-paddles. In turn, the attractive ECOMOTIVE version is the most ecological of its segment thanks to its reduced CO2 emissions figure of only 99 g/km.

Cutting-edge technology

Created for exciting driving pleasure, the new Ibiza CUPRA features an exclusive design with a spectacular front end where the "Arrow Design" concept lends maximum expressivity, especially due to the newly designed bumper, featuring the air intake vents surrounding the central grille, and the overall athletic looks, with its outstanding 17" alloy wheels, prominent shoulders that house the rear lights, and the newly designed, centrally placed trapezoid tailpipe.

Making its debut on the new Ibiza CUPRA is a brand-new version of the powerful, efficient 1.4 TSI engine. This twin-turbo engine now delivers 180 hp and is mated to a seven speed DSG gearbox with steering wheel shift-paddles. The 1.4 TSI twin-turbo engine delivers a noteworthy reduction in emission levels and fuel consumption thanks to its small cylinder capacity, keeping in line with the brand's commitment to reducing CO2 emissions on the entire engine range.

The combination of this engine and the agility and sporty character of the DSG gearbox provide the driver with a thrilling experience at the wheel. Add to this the possibility of changing gears by tapping the paddles located on the steering wheel and the great stability offered by the SEAT "Agile Chassis" system, and the driver is able to reach the highest levels of sports driving.

Among its equipment, besides the standard ESP, the Spanish maker's new car also features ABS, TCS + EBA, driver and passenger airbag, head airbag, Hill Hold Control, tyre pressure loss warning light, twin chrome headlights, fog lamps with cornering function, "easy entry" system on the passenger seat, CUPRA suspension, CUPRA sports seats and aluminium pedals.

Ibiza ECOMOTIVE, leader in environmental sustainability

Following the perfect tread marks traced by its predecessor, the new Ibiza ECOMOTIVE will be launched at the Paris Motor Show with a revamped styling and the reputation of being the most ecological car of its segment, by placing the CO2 emissions level at only 99 g/km. These figures will also allow customers to save on registration tax when buying the new Ibiza ECOMOTIVE.

Available in both the 5-door and SportCoupe' versions, the Ibiza ECOMOTIVE is equipped with the 80 hp 1.4 TDI with DPF particulate filter which not only allows the engine to reduce emissions under the 100 g/km mark, but also reduces fuel consumption.

Undoubtedly, the updated engine software contributes to achieving these results, as well as improvements to the gearbox and the gear ratios, the new 175/70 R14 tyres, the 14" wheels with hubcaps and, as on the previous model, the replacement of the spare wheel with an antipuncture kit.

Another aspect which was closely studied to reduce fuel consumption and emissions figures was the aerodynamics of the car. The new ECOMOTIVE version of the Ibiza incorporates several solutions, such as the new closed front grille and new rear spoiler that combine to reduce resistance to movement and therefore decrease mechanical effort as well as fuel consumption and emissions.

As for the interior equipment, the ECOMOTIVE has the same comfort and safety elements as on the rest of the Ibiza range, in this case with the Reference finish.

Both the new Ibiza ECOMOTIVE and the CUPRA will be manufactured exclusively at the SEAT plant in Martorell near Barcelona.

Extensive Updates for the Honda Legend

Re-styled Honda Legend
  • New 3.7 litre V6-engine with more torque, lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel efficiency
  • Faster acceleration
  • Extensive styling updates
  • Revised automatic gearbox with faster shift times and more responsive paddle-shift
  • Even greater refinement for noise absorption to enhance Active Noise Cancellation system
At the Moscow motor show, Honda has revealed the look of the re-styled Honda Legend to Europe.

This revised model gives a new edge to the top of the range Honda and responds to customer feedback on the current model. The most noticeable change is to the exterior style of the Legend, with new lights, bonnet, front wings, boot lid, bumpers and the adoption of standard 18" wheels.

Under the restyled bonnet is one of the most powerful V6 engines in this sector, giving the power of a V8 engine, while retaining the smoothness and fuel economy inherent to this layout.

The new engine has an additional 200cc that helps to give the new Legend greater torque across the whole rev range. Complementing this increase in capacity the 3.7 litre V6 has VTEC added to the exhaust valves, joining the system already fitted on the inlet side. These realised a 20% increase in torque in the mid-range. The result is an enhancement to the feeling of power, as well as the improved acceleration.

Coupled to this revised engine, is an all-new 5-speed gearbox that helps the driver exploit and enjoy the revised power unit. The new box has switched to a straight gate and empowers the driver with additional control over gear selection with revised steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters and new gearbox software. The new transmission reacts faster to changes in driver input even in the normal automatic mode and so gives the driver access to power when it's most needed.

The combined effects of the improved transmission and increase in torque mean that the new Legend can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than before. Fuel economy and CO2 have also improved over the previous model, despite the improved acceleration performance.

Central to the concept of the current Legend is the cabin refinement which reduces the stress of modern motoring. This theme has been taken a stage further with the new car by equipping it with a suite of NVH reducing technologies. The most advanced of these is the Active Noise Cancellation system (ANC), which cancels out low frequency noise by playing the opposite wave form through the Bose sound system. New to the flagship is a new form of sound deadening mat that has improved noise reducing properties and is lighter than conventional materials. An acoustic windscreen and improved bushing complete these improvements to the already very refined Honda flagship.

Safety is a cornerstone of the Legend, and adds Active Head Restraints to its already impressive safety equipment. The new head restraints are similar in principle to the items found in the Civic and Accord models and compliment the reassuring ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure. Optional in some markets are the Adaptive Cruise Control and CMBS systems, which use millimetre wave radar to detect and help reduce the risk of collisions.

The chassis of the Legend has also received some attention to further enhance the Legend's rock solid, yet entertaining handling. Although the very advanced SH-AWD system remains unchanged the settings for the suspension have been altered to improve the ride and handling.

The already well equipped Legend gets some more revisions to compliment the new model. Rear seat passengers can now enjoy the benefits of heated seats, while the Bose Audio system now has a USB socket, to enable the easy connection of an iPod.

Volkswagen Group in the fast lane : Wolfsburg automaker now holds third place in global vehicle sales ranking
WOLFSBURG : August 28, 2008 - The Volkswagen Group has taken its place among the world’s top three automakers thanks to the Wolfsburg-based company’s outstanding delivery figures in the first half of 2008. Rival Ford had to settle for fourth position.

"We are delighted that the Volkswagen Group has made it to the global automobile industry’s top three for the first time. This shows that we are on the right track with our ever-stronger international presence and, above all, our product program. We will systematically push ahead with our growth course even in the present difficult market environment," Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, commented.

With 3.31 million vehicles delivered in the first half of 2008, the Volkswagen Group increased deliveries in the first six months of this year by 7.2 percent, moving up to third place in the global vehicle sales ranking and overtaking its rival Ford, which announced vehicle sales of 3.22 million for this period.

GUANGZHOU : August 28, 2008 - Guangzhou Automotive and Toyota have been in partnership for several years now, producing a range of Toyota cars (Camry, Yaris etc) but now Guangzhou Auto wants to use its automotive muscle, and massive profits to invest in a self branded vehicle.

Guangzhou Automotive's first foray into joint venture partnerships ended in disaster when they signed up with Peugeot to make the 504 in China. By the time it was launched in China, the 505 was old news. The 505 was launched in 1979, but Chinese production began in 1985 and ran until 1997, the 505 was not a massive success. Peugeot and Guangzhou parted company, with Peugeot going to Dongfeng, and Guangzhou landing the big prize, Toyota.

Since their partnership with Toyota, Guangzhou have gone from strength, and now it comes as no surpise that Guangzhou wish to break free and go down the self development road. Guangzhou and Toyota have come to an arrangement where Guangzhou will use the Camry platform for their own midsize sedan. Guangzhou Auto are currently working on building a new factory which will produce their own range of vehicles, and engines, this factory is expected to be fully completed by 2010, and will make around 100,000 cars per year.

BANGKOK - Local automobile production rose 19% to 841,156 units in the seven months to July due to growth in both exports and domestic sales, according to Surapong Phaisitpattanapong, spokesman for the Federation of Thai Industries' automobile industry club.

Vehicle sales in July fell 12.5% year-on-year to 44,772 units after pickup truck sales plunged 32.8% to 21,290 units as consumers switched to cars to escape diesel's record-breaking price. And with E20 fuel priced cheaper than fossil gasoline, car sales jumped 27.5% year-on-year in July to 19,280 units.

However, Mr Surapong said local sales in the first seven months still exceeded those in the same period last year, up 6.6% to 366,247 units. Sales of cars were up 31.7% to 129,699 units, while pickup truck sales fell 5.5% to 203,178 units.

Despite the dip in domestic sales, automobile exports continued growing. In July, exports were up 27.10% to 71,232 units. Exports in the seven months to July rose 25.81% to 841,156 units.

The motorcycle market grew with gains in farm product prices, the government's wealth distribution policies and accelerating state budget disbursement.

Motorcycle sales in July increased 16.3% to 160,357 units, the highest monthly figure this year, resulting in total sales in the seven months up 4.75%to 1,033,000 units.

Exports of motorcycles in July jumped 40.5% to 11,914 units as a result of Kawasaki's surging exports to the United States and Europe after it relocated its production base to Thailand.

However, motorcycle assembly kit exports fell due to Thailand's trading partners raising their kit production. As a result, total kit exports in July totalled only 114,205 units, down 29.4%, while the export of motorcycle parts in July soared 47.7% to 1.7 billion baht.

In seven months, motorcycle exports were down 12.4% to 915,307 units, of which 87,150 units were fully built and 828,157 units were assembly kits.

Mr Surapong said total automotive product sales _ built vehicles, engines, motorcycles, kits and parts in seven months rose 32% to 331.36 billion baht.

Honda announces the new S2000 spec., details and pricing

2009 Honda S2000 Defines Racing-Inspired Performance

2008 Honda S2000 CR

TORRANCE, Calif. : August 27, 2008 - Widely considered the quintessential roadster-style sports car, the S2000 is the performance icon for the Honda brand and combines uncompromising racetrack-ready performance with everyday usability. As a true sports car that can serve as a practical and fun daily driver and also feel equally at home on a racetrack, this concept is further evolved with a club racer-inspired S2000 CR trim, first offered in the 2008 model year.

The S2000 rewards driving enthusiasts with a potent 237 horsepower, 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTEC? 4-cylinder engine and a precise, short throw 6-speed manual transmission, along with tenacious handling and a perfect 50/50 weight balance. The S2000 includes an electronic Drive-by-Wire (DBW) Throttle System^(TM), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA?), Maintenance Minder^(TM) system, standard headrest speakers, an outside temperature gauge and an engine start button. Air conditioning and an AM/FM/CD audio system are standard equipment on the S2000, optional on the S2000 CR for weight savings.

"The Honda S2000 is a true performance vehicle that provides customers with an exciting experience behind the wheel," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Because the S2000 is a car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, it can easily satisfy daily driving needs without sacrificing track-worthy performance."

The S2000's renowned high-revving, 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTEC 4-cylinder engine remains the pinnacle of naturally aspirated performance technology, delivering 237 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and 162 lb-ft. of torque at 6,800 rpm. Perfectly complimenting the engine's output characteristics is a compact, longitudinally-mounted, close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission that features a direct linkage for precise shifting and quick throws.

The S2000 comes equipped with a Drive-by-Wire throttle control system eliminating the need for a mechanical connection between the throttle pedal and the engine. This enables continuous electronic monitoring and adjustment of throttle pedal sensitivity to create an ideal match between throttle response and driving conditions. The system also manages the S2000's cruise control function for greater precision.

Honda's VSA makes the S2000 more stable and forgiving during street driving or in inclement weather conditions. Working in concert with the Drive-by-Wire system, VSA continuously monitors yaw rate, steering input, throttle input, and braking pressure to determine if the car is following the driver's intended path, and can independently coordinate each of the disc brakes through the 4-channel anti-lock brake system, along with the throttle, to enhance vehicle stability. While this serves to effectively enhance driver control during acceleration, braking, and cornering, the system can be disabled with the touch of a button when conditions warrant it. To help provide optimum stopping power, the braking system also features Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

The S2000's rear-wheel-drive chassis and powertrain layout results in a 50/50 front/rear weight distribution for perfect balance when cornering, while its hybrid monocoque body and "high X-bone frame" results in exceptional structural rigidity. Combined with a front and rear double wishbone suspension, precise electric power steering, and a torque-sensing limited slip differential, the end result is a complete, no compromise performance package for the enthusiast driver.

The S2000 has dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags (SRS) for the driver and passenger, three-point seat belts with load limiters and automatic tensioning system, roll bar hoops and reinforced windshield posts. For pedestrian safety, the hood hinges and windshield-wiper pivots are designed to collapse and help minimize the severity of a head injury to a pedestrian.

Standard features for the S2000 include a power retractable convertible top, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, leather trimmed seats and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with daytime running lights. An aluminum hardtop and XM? Satellite Radio are available as dealer installed options.

S2000 CR

The lighter, stiffer and more aggressive overall design of the S2000 CR is engineered to maximize the S2000's potential on a racetrack with the goal of substantially-improving track times, chassis balance and feel. Compared to the S2000, the factory-tuned suspension on the S2000 CR provides more aggressive track-oriented settings, increased body and chassis rigidity, overall weight reduction, and aerodynamic spoilers tuned for reduced lift and enhanced chassis balance at high speeds. A removable aluminum hardtop replaces the convertible soft top.

The aerodynamic package reduces lift through large and specially-tuned front and rear spoilers. Exclusive chassis features include a quicker steering ratio, more aggressive Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires (in place of RE050 tires), a larger rear tire size, firmer springs and dampers, larger stabilizer bars and a darker shade of gray on the wheel design. A rear body brace occupies the area previously occupied by the soft top on the S2000, resulting in additional rigidity on the S2000 CR. Relative to the base S2000, cumulative weight savings total 51 pounds (hardtop installed) and 99 pounds (hardtop removed). A sport-tuned muffler adds to the vehicles heightened performance feel. To save weight, air conditioning and an AM/FM/CD audio system are only available as factory-installed optional equipment.

The S2000 CR interior follows traditional racecar themes. Fabric seating surfaces with yellow stitching help create a sporty appearance while synthetic suede bolsters enhance lateral grip. An exclusive spherical aluminum shift knob on the S2000 CR resides 12.6 mm lower for a 6 percent reduction in shift stroke compared to the conventional S2000 cylindrical shift knob (aluminum/leather wrapped). Additionally, shift load effort increases by 10 percent for even more direct feedback when engaging a gear. The S2000 CR instrument panel meters include a "peak-power indicator." When the engine is operating at peak power, a round, green light illuminates to the right of the digital speedometer.

The design and engineering concept for the S2000 is to deliver race-car-like performance and handling-something an enthusiast driver could use and enjoy, even in everyday driving situations. In addition, the S2000 is intended to be a modern, socially-responsible automobile with low emissions. The S2000's roadster layout also captures the spirit of the legendary high-performance sports cars of the past, as well as Honda's very first sports car, the S500 roadster. However, the S2000 makes no attempt to be a retro sports car. It is a unique, Honda interpretation of a modern sports car - with high performance, state-of-the-art technology, style, and Honda durability, quality and refinement.

For 2009, the S2000 is available in six colors, including, Laguna Blue Pearl, Silverstone Metallic, New Formula Red, Rio Yellow Pearl, Berlina Black and Grand Prix White. The S2000 CR is available in four colors: Rio Yellow Pearl; Grand Prix White; Berlina Black; and the CR exclusive, Apex Blue Pearl.

New badge for more muscular Ford Mustang

Pony gets new look for 2010 Ford Mustang, hints at more chiseled look of upcoming model

Side by side Mustang badge

  • More-muscular, faster-looking Mustang pony emblem enhances grilles on new 2010 models.
  • New Mustang pony badge highlights attention to detail in design of new Mustang, which will be revealed later this year.
DEARBORN, Mich. : August 27, 2008 - Curious about what the 2010 Ford Mustang looks like? Its new pony badge offers a clue. Like the upcoming restyled Mustang, the new pony is more defined, more muscular and sure to catch the eye of Mustang enthusiasts.

2010 Mustang Badge

"It's just a faster-looking steed," said George Saridakis, Design manager for the 2010 Mustang.

A stronger, more dynamic pony badge with defined edges and crisper forms in a subtly toned tinted-chrome finish will charge across the grilles of the V-6 and GT versions of the 2010 Mustang. For the first time, a black-chrome version of the Mustang pony badge will accent the new GT grille.

"We wanted to give the Mustang pony a more realistic feel," said Douglas Gaffka, chief designer for the 2010 Mustang. "We lifted the head to make the pony more proud, tipped the neck into the wind to give it a feeling of greater speed and better balance.

"It's more chiseled and more defined and looks more like a wild horse," Gaffka added. "It's more realistic in terms of proportion to an actual Mustang."

Senior Designer Rick Howard spent hours researching images of horses and understanding their appearance in natural, wild settings. That effort, along with his personal riding experience, helped bring forward the design of the Mustang pony badge.

2009 Mustang Badge

Like the Mustang itself, which was revealed at the 1964 New York World's Fair, the Mustang emblem has a proud heritage. The original Mustang logo was drawn by Phil Clark for the Mustang I. The Mustang logo then was refined for the Mustang II in 1974 by Charles Keresztes, a former member of Hungary's Olympic equestrian team. The pony continued on the front grille through 1978 when it was replaced by "FORD" in block letters through 1982. The iconic Ford Blue Oval graced the front of Mustangs through 1993. The pony emblem returned in 1994 with some refinements. The logo was updated again in 2005.

For Howard and the team, creating the new badge was a labor of love.

"We're very much concerned with detail and precision in our cars at Ford, and that includes the art we do," Howard said. "We want our Mustang pony badge to be as good as the rest of the car."

Dodge Viper

  • Move part of Company's focus on core business
  • Goal is ensuring strong future for Viper
  • Stand-alone strategic review unique to Viper
AUBURN HILL, Mich. : August 27, 2008 - Chrysler LLC announced today that it is preparing to explore strategic options for the Dodge Viper business. This strategic review comes as the Company focuses on enhancing its core business and leveraging its assets.

"We have been approached by third parties who are interested in exploring future possibilities for Viper," said Bob Nardelli, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer -- Chrysler LLC. "As the Company evaluates strategic options to maximize core operations and leverage its assets, we have agreed to listen to these parties. We will do so keeping in mind the best interests of those who have shown tremendous support for the vehicle -- including employees, suppliers, dealers and a worldwide group of loyal Viper owners and enthusiasts. Viper is an integral part of this Company's heritage. While this is a strategic review, our intent would be to offer strong operational and financial support during any potential transaction, in order to ensure a future for the Viper business and perpetuate the legacy of this great vehicle."

This review -- unique to the Viper specialty vehicle -- comes as the Company strengthens the Dodge brand's core portfolio with four all-new Dodge-branded offerings introduced for 2009 -- Dodge Journey, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Durango Hybrid and Dodge Ram -- and prepares to bring even more exciting vehicles to its customers in the near future.

The Viper is hand-built in a low-volume, modular process at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, which operates largely independent of Chrysler's other production facilities. The vehicle was introduced as a concept vehicle at the 1989 Detroit auto show. It was first available as a production vehicle in the 1992 model year.

With today's announcement, the Company emphasizes that it has not set a definitive timetable for completion of the review of its strategic options, no final decision has been made with regard to the Viper business, and there can be no assurance that any transaction will take place as a result of this process. Chrysler has retained Lazard as its financial advisor in connection with this review.

Audi develops race version of the R8

  • Customer sport programme with the mid-engine sportscar
  • First races planned for 2009 season
  • Factory driver Frank Biela completes roll-out
INGOLSTADT : August 28, 2008 – For the first time, Audi Sport will offer a racing sports car specifically developed for customer use in the form of the powerful 500 hp plus GT3 version of the Audi R8 which will be available from autumn 2009. The logistics and factory space required for the AUDI AG customer programme will be created over the next few months in Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm and Györ

"The R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sportscar and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up our first big customer sport programme," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "Ever since the R8 was unveiled we've been inundated with enquiries about a race version. With the Audi R8 we will offer customers a racing sportscar equipped with high-calibre technology and the typical Audi qualities, but which is nevertheless easy to handle."

The Audi R8 conforms to the production-based GT3 regulations allowing the car to be fielded in numerous national and international race series.

Because the GT3 regulations prohibit the use of four-wheel drive the Audi R8 comes with the typical GT rear-wheel drive. The power is transmitted via a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox. The suspension uses almost exclusively components from the production line. A comprehensive list of safety equipment guarantees the highest-level of passive safety. A modified front end and a large rear-wing generate the required downforce for the race track.

The Audi R8, which bears the project name "R16" within Audi Sport, was developed under the direction of Audi Sport. Mid August, the first prototype successfully completed a roll-out in the hands of Audi factory driver Frank Biela.

The first test races in various European racing series are scheduled for the 2009 season. Delivery to the customers is planned from the autumn of this coming year.

The customer cars are manufactured together by Audi Sport and the quattro GmbH, which is also responsible for production of the Audi R8 street version, and Audi Hungaria Motor Kft. (Györ).

NORFOLK : August 27, 2008 - Jim Clark is considered by many as the finest and most naturally gifted racing driver of all time. He won the F1 World Championship twice for Team Lotus in 1963 and in 1965. In total, he won 25 Grand Prix races and was the first Briton to win the Indianapolis 500. Clark won a third of all the F1 races he entered, as well as racing in other formulae such as F2, F3 and Touring Cars. Typically he would race in as many as three different categories per race meeting! How many of the current crop of F1 drivers would do that?

In tribute to Jim Clark's achievements, Lotus, in association with Classic Team Lotus, is producing the Clark Type 25 Elise SC, with a donation for each of these special cars sold going to the Jim Clark memorial fund. This Elise, initially limited to just 25 cars in the UK is now also available for a further 25 cars in the mainland European market. The decision to produce another 25 cars for the mainland European Market was driven by the high demand from dealers and customers from all over Europe.

The 25 has been the Type number of his 1963 Lotus F1 car and his number of F1 wins and has been authorised by the Clark family and coincides with the 40th anniversary of Jim Clark's death at Hockenheim in 1968.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus Plc comments, "It is fitting that the latest version of our award winning Elise, the Clark Type 25 Elise SC, should celebrate the life of Jim Clark. Each owner of the Clark Type 25 Elise SC will be joining an unrivalled heritage that recognises motorsport's greatest partnership, that of Lotus and Jim Clark."

The Clark Type 25 Elise SC draws upon many styling cues from the Type 25 Formula 1 car that Jim Clark raced to win the World Championship in 1963. The car, with a removable hard top as standard, is finished in British Racing Green with a yellow stripe along the centre and features high performance Lotus Sport wheels, finished in an historic black and silver design. The interior is inspired by the Team Lotus Formula 1 cars of the era, with black leather sports seats, trimmed with red leather and all finished off with a retro wooden gear knob.

The Elise SC is the most powerful production Elise ever produced and offers stunning performance. Power comes from a 1.8 litre non-intercooled, supercharged engine and uses intelligent cam switching technology, enabling the engine to switch to the high performance cam anywhere between 4000 and 6200 rpm. This clever feature gives the engine two characters, allowing the car to be driven economically or giving maximum performance for spirited driving.

The Elise's light weight gives low CO2 emissions (202 g/km), great handling and affords phenomenal braking. Another benefit of the low weight is incredible acceleration, with the sprint to 100 km/h in only 4.6 seconds. The Elise SC accelerates on to a top speed of 238 km/h. Combined fuel consumption is 8.5 l/100 km.

All Lotus cars offer exceptional handling and the Elise is no exception. The chassis has a seriously light, stiff structure. Combining this technology with the fantastic Lotus ride and handling gives an inspiring driving experience and the mid-engined layout of the Lotus Elise offers fantastic balance and agility.
The Elise SC offers a few technological advances that Jim Clark may have found helpful in his Type 25. Coming as standard on the Elise is traction control, ABS and sequential shift lights, however all the driver aids are included to improve the driving experience and do not intervene unless really called upon.
The Clark Type 25 Elise SC is available for all countries in Europe and is on sale now. The car is priced very competitively at EUR 44.100,-- (+ local taxes). This price is representing a customer saving of EUR 3.596,-- (before tax). Please note: prices include transport, delivery, local taxes, and first service.

SHANGHAI : August 27, 2008 — BYD Auto and Chery Automobile both plan to begin building and selling new hybrid sedans later this year in their home market of China. So far, neither company has announced formal plans to enter the U.S. market, although Chery has a supply deal with Chrysler.

The two Chinese companies already have exhibited their hybrids — the BYD F3DM and the Chery A5 Hybrid — at auto shows in China. BYD showed a cutaway version of its larger F6DM hybrid in January at the Detroit auto show.

The Corolla-size F3DM will go on sale later this year, priced from around $14,500, according to the Chinese Web site sina.com. With this car, BYD expects to undercut the price of the Toyota Prius by thousands of dollars. The F3DM, or Dual Mode, is a plug-in hybrid with a proprietary lithium-ion battery pack that can run on either gasoline or pure electric power.

Chery plans to begin selling the A5 Hybrid in October. It displayed an updated version of the car in April at the Beijing show. Unlike the BYD F3DM, Chery's A5 is a mild hybrid, meaning the electric motor only provides an assist to the gasoline engine.

Chery has not specified the start price for the A5 Hybrid, but media speculation in China projects a base sticker of $12,000 to $14,000.

So far, Chinese automakers have no concrete plans to market hybrid vehicles in North America — but stay tuned.

  • All-new Fiesta priced from just ?8,695-?155 less than outgoing equivalent
BRENTWOOD, ESSEX : 27 August, 2008 - Ford's high-tech all-new Fiesta will go on sale in October with insurance groups the same or lower than the outgoing model. Data provider CAP has set the all-new Fiesta's residual value with an average rise of 7.9 per cent.

With more power, lower emissions and a host of big-car features, Britain's most stylish newcomer enters the small-car market costing ?155 less than the equivalent previous generation entry model. The new typical residual value increase is £1,000. This ranges from £700 for Zetec 1.4-litre TDCi to ?1,175 on Titanium 1.6-litre petrol. Savings on insurance could be around £40 with three models having the same insurance group and all others are lower: the 1.6 TDCi Zetec drops from 6E to 4E.

Ford of Britain's marketing director, Mark Ovenden, said: "All-new Fiesta is set to take Britain by storm. Already, customers are excited about the technology, style and economy they are going to get from this great new car. Mazda Kazamai - A Sustainable Crossover Concept

MOSCOW : August 26, 2008 - Last year, Mazda Motor Corporation announced that it was embarking on a new direction with technology development. The strategy, called 'Sustainable Zoom-Zoom,' would focus on producing vehicles that combine Mazda's trademark driving excitement with further evolved environmental and safety technologies.

Mazda Kazamai - A Sustainable Crossover Concept
'Sustainable Zoom-Zoom' and Mazda's Nagare design have been combined in the Mazda Kazamai concept car which showcases how Mazda could deliver a vehicle in the near future that is exhilarating to look at and exciting to drive, with an improved average fuel economy by 30 percent and producing far fewer emissions than today's production models. This is Mazda at its best -- a cool, athletic compact crossover, with next-generation environmental performance. Designed with the Russian compact SUV segment in mind, Kazamai gives a glimpse at where Mazda is heading with a possible future compact crossover.

Russia's booming Automobile Market
Between 2004 and the end of 2007, Russia's automobile market grew by about 1.28 million cars, and in the process became Europe's second largest car market after Germany. During this same period, Mazda quickly established itself as one of Russia's most popular car brands, increasing sales from 8,565 units in 2004 to over 50,000 units last year -- six times more than 2004.

One of the country's biggest segments is the sports utility vehicle (SUV), representing 16 percent of the total sales volume in 2007. Between 2004 and 2007, the segment became 10 times larger and this growth is expected to continue over the mid-term in Russia. Mazda's mid-sized sports crossover SUV, the CX-7, has been on the market for less than a year in Russia and has already found over 7,900 customers -- easily Mazda's largest market for the CX-7 in Europe.

The Mazda Kazamai concept car addresses the growing popularity of SUVs in Russia and gives a strong hint at where Mazda might be going with a compact crossover SUV. Small, lightweight with dynamic styling, low-consumption, a next-generation Mazda powertrain, it is meant to appeal to young, upwardly-mobile Russians with a strong sense of style and urban lifestyle demands.

Design -- Evolved Nagare Design
Mazda Kazamai means "swirling crosswinds" in Japanese, and was chosen to express the powerful yet nimble character of this stylish and compact crossover. Kazamai is dynamic and athletic looking on the outside and displays an evolved Nagare 'flow' design. Unlike previous concept cars, Mazda Kazamai's styling represents powerful natural movements that are emotionally expressed through three-dimensional motifs stretching over the whole body, representing a fusion of design and functionality.

Mazda Kazamai is an impressive combination of packaging requirements and design aesthetics. With a width of 1,930 mm and a length of 4,520 mm, it is slightly larger than the current Mazda3, with room for SUV comfort and functionality on the inside. Yet, because it is only 1,500 mm high, has a flat roofline and very short rear overhangs, it also has a sporty coupe look with the promise of driving fun. The innovative body design features flared fenders that emphasize SUV-like strength and a cabin befitting a sports car. The wedge-shaped profile was designed to evoke the image of a sleek arrow cutting through a mighty wind. In particular, the body design between the front wheel arches and the roof pillars is intended to express the agility and dynamism of wind gusting along the side of the vehicle. The panel lines on the sides represent swift and elegant crosswinds, further accentuating the dynamic and stylish body design. The bonnet itself is lower in the centre than on the sides, which emphasizes the car's powerful front fenders that accommodate large, 22-inch wheels.

The wheel design continues the crosswinds motif with each spoke carefully twisted and larger outside than in the centre, providing a strong sense of movement. The five-point grille is integrated into the body to create a clean and light image which, together with the flared front lower sides contributes to excellent aerodynamic characteristics. The aerodynamics are further improved by making the air intakes as small as possible. The side sill panels and rear combination light covers also help to control the wind flow and reduce drag even further.

Interior -- SUV Functionality with Driving Safety
Mazda Kazamai is not only a pure expression of speed and power, it also accommodates up to four passengers with compact SUV comfort and functionality. It was designed to fulfil various driver and vehicle interfaces so as to support the driver in enjoying safe and stress-free driving, with well considered human machine interface visibility and operation cockpit. This is one of Mazda's important areas of the Sustainable Zoom-Zoom plan.

Lightweight and Aerodynamic
Weight reduction and superior aerodynamic performance are core technologies to improve both driving pleasure and environment performance, especially fuel economy. Mazda will further focus on these crucial factors in order to achieve the goals of the Sustainable Zoom-Zoom plan. Despite its powerful exterior look, the Mazda Kazamai concept's aerodynamic performance is achieved through a flat floor panel, a rear diffuser, and a low roof line. The aim was to make the Kazamai's aerodynamics more than 10% better than other vehicles in its class.

When Mazda set about reducing the bodyweight, they leveraged CAE applications and focused on four major areas: collision safety, handling, NVH, and strength. At the same time, lightweight materials and new processing/joining technologies were put to effective use. Aluminium or aluminium-alloy is used for the bonnet, chassis and engine block. The designers aimed to make it 100 kilograms lighter than similar models by employing plastics for the panels, fenders and the engine cover. These features also contribute to advanced handling and improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Next-Generation Powertrain -- 30 Percent Improvement in Fuel Consumption

The ideal match for the Mazda Kazamai concept would be a next-generation 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol engine, which Mazda engineers are currently developing. This engine delivers a balance of sporty driving -- especially in a compact car like the Mazda Kazamai -- with good environmental performance. Mazda Kazamai will feature a DISI* engine based on the current Mazda CX-7, with advanced technologies to minimize energy loss and vastly improved thermal efficiency. Mazda's next generation 2.0-litre DISI petrol engine also has combustion control technology and variable valve control that deliver strong torque throughout the rev-range for excellent engine response as well as superior fuel economy. A next-generation catalyst also ensures superior emissions performance. *DISI: Direct Injection Spark Ignition This is coupled to a lightweight and next-generation compact six-speed automatic transmission that is highly responsive and delivers the direct feel of a manual transmission, and four-wheel drive for superior traction. In combination with Kazamai's next-generation aerodynamics and its lightweight body outlined above, this powertrain would deliver an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel consumption and emissions (versus the current MZR 2.0-litre petrol) -- without compromising driving pleasure.

Advanced Safety and Security Features
Mazda Kazamai is not only lightweight, fuel-efficient and fun to drive, it is also designed with safety as a key element. Its advanced body shell is a product of a new body structure programme currently being refined at Mazda with a lightweight structure that provides high levels of crash safety. Mazda Kazamai also has a long list of active safety features including roll stability control, blind spot monitoring to assist lane change, a pre-crash safety system and advanced dynamic stability control (DSC) to support the driver. And to meet future pedestrian safety requirements, it has soft plastic fenders and a shock-cone aluminium bonnet that is very efficient in absorbing impact energy.

MOSCOW : August 26, 2008 - No fewer than three new production models from Ford Motor Company will make their Russian debuts at the Moscow International Automobile Salon, which opens today. The new models are the all-new Ford Fiesta, the Ford Focus RS and the Ford Escape.

Visitors to the show will also be given the opportunity to see the Ford Explorer America Concept, which showcases a number of technology and engineering innovations designed to deliver fuel economy improvements of between 20 to 30 per cent.

New Ford Fiesta

All-New Fiesta
Designed and developed in Europe for sale in Europe, Asia Pacific and North America between 2008 and 2010, the all-new Fiesta is the first major product of Ford's new global product development process. Its stylish and dynamic flair combines with all the traditional Ford small car strengths to create a confident, contemporary introduction to the next chapter of the Fiesta success story.

Shown in Moscow in three-door and five-door hatchback body styles, the all-new Fiesta makes major strides in craftsmanship, quality of materials and product choice while continuing to represent Fiesta's traditional strengths of practicality, value for money and agility.

More than 12 million Fiestas have been sold since its introduction in 1976.
All-new Fiesta is manufactured with sophisticated techniques more commonly found in big-car production. Areas of the Fiesta European assembly plants in Cologne, Germany and Valencia, Spain -- and eventually those in China, Thailand and Mexico -- look like film sets. High-intensity lights and cameras are used by robotic assembly technology to position glass and doors on vehicles with meticulous accuracy.

New Ford Focus RS

2009 Focus RS
The new Focus RS will go on sale in 2009 and is being created by a small team of dedicated engineers, under the direction of Jost Capito, Ford of Europe's Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles.

The Moscow show car previews the design intent for a final production vehicle, although as development work continues, some final details may change before volume production begins at the Ford plant in Saarlouis, Germany.

With a target power output of 300 PS, the new Focus RS will be equipped with an innovative front wheel drive system, with a combination of a Quaife limited slip differential and new 'RevoKnuckle' front suspension technology for excellent traction and driveability, despite its high power output.

New Ford Escape

SUV Strength
In Russian Ford dealer showrooms a little later this year will be the new Ford Escape. It will join the Kuga, Ranger and Explorer to further strengthen Ford's position in the growing Russian SUV market. Already this year sales in this market segment have grown by 20 per cent when compared to the same period in 2007.

The new Escape is powered by a 2.3 litre petrol engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. It is available in two trim series - XLT or Limited.

With the Ford Explorer being a long-time favourite with Russian consumers, The Ford Explorer America Concept on the Ford stand is sure to draw the crowds at the show. This concept vehicle -- there are no plans for it to go into production -- not only represents one possible direction for Ford's design language on future sport utility vehicles but also illustrates how all of Ford's sustainability-minded actions -- from turbo-charged direct injection petrol engines, more fuel-efficient transmissions, weight savings and improved aerodynamics -- can be packaged in a single vehicle.

The high-efficiency engine for the Concept is one of the new family of EcoBoost petrol engines which deliver better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Ford EcoBoost petrol engines combine turbocharging and direct injection technology, allowing for the downsizing of engine capacity but with improved torque and performance. Depending on whether a four cylinder or V-6 EcoBoost engine is specified, fuel efficiency could improve by 20 to 30 per cent versus today's V6 Explorer.

The Ford stand at the Moscow International Automobile Salon will also feature the full Ford vehicle range on sale in Russia. This includes the new Kuga, new Focus, new Focus Coupe' Cabriolet, new Focus ST, Explorer, Mondeo, Galaxy, S-MAX, C-MAX, Fusion, Ranger, and Tourneo Connect.

In a special area of the stand dedicated to Ford's World Rally Championship activities, show visitors will be able to experience all the thrills of a WRC event by sitting behind the wheel of a Focus WRC simulator.

Volkswagen Tiguan

WOLFSBURG/MOSCOW : August 26, 2008 - At the Moscow International Motor Show (08/26 to 09/07) Volkswagen is presenting the largest range of models ever shown in Russia under the VW label. Marking its debut on the strongly growing Russian market are the Tiguan and the new Passat CC.

SUV bestseller: dynamic Tiguan launches as younger brother of the Touareg
A sign of just how significant the Russian market is for Volkswagen is demonstrated by the Tiguan; effectively immediately, this younger brother to the Touareg will also be manufactured at the new Kaluga plant near Moscow. The Jetta and the Passat are already being produced there. And indeed with the same precision and quality typical of Volkswagen. In Russia, the Tiguan is being offered in the versions "Sport & Style" and "Track & Field" (off-road version with larger front approach angle). A 110 kW / 150 PS strong 1.4 TSI is being offered on the entry-level versions of both variants. Its top speed of 192 km/h contrasts with a very low average fuel consumption of 8.4 liters fuel per 100 kilometers. The top model, the Tiguan 2.0 TSI (125 kW / 170 PS), is 200 km/h fast. Nonetheless, its average fuel consumption of 9.1 liters is also pleasantly low.

In parallel to extending production at Kaluga to new car lines, the dealer network is also being continually expanded according to plan. Frank Wittemann, Director of the Volkswagen Brand in Russia: "Our long-term goal is to expand our network from 63 currently active dealers to about 120 businesses. Not only are we focusing on metropolises such as Moscow or St. Petersburg, but we are also looking at regional sites. This year we will enlarge our sales network by another 17 dealers."

Volkswagen Passat CC

Four-door coupe': Passat CC in 300-PS version with standard all-wheel drive
For the first time in Russia, Volkswagen is also presenting the new CC -- the third variant of the Passat series that has enjoyed success across the globe. Background: with more than 15 million cars built, the Passat and the Passat Variant rank among the really big successes in automotive history. Now Volkswagen is extending the model range of this car line by adding a third dimension: the Passat CC. Its fully independent body design, an interior that has sporty individually sculpted seats in the rear too, impressive powertrain systems and technological highlights worthy of the luxury class, meld together to create a vehicle that continues to be unique in the Passat's market segment. The Passat CC is an elegant sedan and a dynamic coupe' simultaneously. The concept and design of this Volkswagen are defining fresh, new directions beyond the mainstream.

At its launch in Russia, the 4.8 meter long Volkswagen will be offered with two gasoline direct injection engines as well as a turbo-diesel. The gasoline engines output 118 kW / 160 PS (TSI) and 220 kW / 300 PS (V6). As a TSI the Passat CC is 222 km/h fast and consumes just 7.6 liters of fuel. The Passat CC V6 is electronically limited to 250 km/h; its fuel consumption is 10.1 liters. The turbo-diesel (TDI) develops 103 kW / 140 PS, consumes just 5.8 liters of diesel and delivers a top speed of 213 km/h. Standard equipment aboard the top V6 model: 4Motion full-time all-wheel drive and DCC adaptive chassis control, both new, and the efficient DSG dual-clutch transmission.

The new Renault Symbol

MOSCOW : August 26, 2008 - Renault has profited from the Moscow Motor Show to reveal New Renault Symbol, the latest vehicle to join its line-up as part of the Renault Commitment 2009 plan. The lines of this three-box saloon suggest refinement and elegance, and its status-enhancing front-end looks are underpinned by the design of the headlamps and the specific grille which is picked out in chrome. The robust lines of the rear are also suggestive of status, while the cabin is comfortable and carefullyappointed.

New Renault Symbol is truly economical to run. Its range of latest-generation engines all combine performance, fuel efficiency and respect for the environment. Both the petrol- and diesel-powered versions of this new vehicle can claim best in class fuel consumption, returning a low 4.3 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 116g/km) with the 1.5 dCi 85hp engine, and 5.9 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 140g/km) with the 1.2 16V 75hp powerplant.

New Renault Symbol sets new standards when it comes to travelling comfort, too. The running gear is inherited from that of Clio II which is acclaimed for the first class balance it strikes between comfort and roadholding. Passengers will also appreciate the quiet drive ensured by the thoroughly soundproofed cabin, while thermal comfort has been engineered to function in the extreme climates of countries like Russia, Turkey, etc. The large (506 dm3), practical boot meets the needs of a wide variety of uses, ranging from family holidays, professional use or a weekend away in the country. And this new three-box car is equally uncompromising in the realm of, delivering optimal protection for all occupants. New Renault Symbol has plenty of arguments in its favour to win over families in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Turkey, the Maghreb countries and the Gulf States. Indeed, this new vehicle heralds the forthcoming renewal of Renault's entire three-box line-up and is due to be released for sale on the majority of its markets between September and November 2008.

Status symbol
Renault has chosen the Moscow Motor Show to take the wraps off New Renault Symbol, the first three-box saloon to form part of the Renault Commitment 2009 plan. This new model was designed to meet customer demand in such dynamic markets as Russia and Turkey. New Renault Symbol is the fruit of international cooperation between different Renault engineering departments.

Close collaboration between Renault engineering teams, plus best level quality

New Renault Symbol was developed over a period of 26 months. Digital technologies including modelling and dynamic simulation were employed at every step of the project which resulted in both time and cost savings. The total capital outlay for New Renault Symbol -- including production-related investment -- was EUR100 million. The use of the running gear from Clio II, itself a benchmark in its segment in terms of comfort and roadholding, permitted design lead times to be kept to a minimum while ensuring an extremely high level of quality. Although Clio Symbol was derived from Clio II, New Renault Symbol is a model in its own right. Designed jointly by Renault engineering teams at the Technocentre (France), in Turkey and in Romania, it is manufactured at the Oyak-Renault plant in Bursa, Turkey, one of the Renault Group's leading factories in terms of quality. It is both ISO 9001- and ISO 14001-certified and employs the production methods spelled out in the Renault Production Way (SPR). Quality control also covers the management of this factory's diversified production which manufactures five different body types on the same line. Bursa's capacity is 360,000 units in three shifts for the five models it produces, namely New Renault Symbol, three- and five-door Clio III, Clio Estate and four-door Me'gane saloon.

A vehicle aimed at promoting growth outside of the Europe region
The decision to manufacture New Renault Symbol in Bursa was taken at a very early stage in the project in order to ensure its production as near as possible to the countries where it would be sold. Indeed, Russia, Turkey, Romania and Algeria are key markets for this model and are expected to absorb more than 80 per cent of production. The rest of production will go to the CEEC (Central and Eastern Europe countries), the Middle East and Africa. This new three-box car targets automobile markets that are enjoying strong growth. Between 2000 and 2007, the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) grew by 176 per cent, while new growth economies such as the Maghreb countries and Turkey grew by 87 per cent, and mature markets (Western Europe, North America and Japan) receded by 4.5 per cent. Forecasts expect this trend to be even more marked in years to come. In this highly competitive marketplace which has seen a significant renewal of the offer, New Renault Symbol has many arguments in its favour, beginning with the brand's performance in this segment. Clio Symbol has been a success story since 2000, with sales totalling more than 600,000 units. It was once again Turkey's best-selling car in 2007. Up to the end of April 2008, Clio Symbol topped its segment in Turkey and was second in Romania, Morocco and Algeria.

New Renault Symbol, tailor-made for its markets
New Renault Symbol reaps the benefit of the organization by regions introduced by Renault in 2006 and which features regular meetings between all the key local players and representatives of centrally-based functions for a more streamlined decision-making process in tune with the needs of the marketplace. The Euromed1 region was closely involved in the project, notably in terms of deciding the specification of the new car and then forecasting sales volumes. Customer surveys and feedback from the field conducted at a very early stage in the project enabled a detailed analysis of the segment to be made with a view to producing a vehicle that perfectly matched customer demand. Two major factors stood out as essential, namely exterior looks and low running costs (fuel consumption, upkeep and servicing). Despite variations from one market to another, this process outlined the principal characteristics of the typical New Renault Symbol buyer who is male and looking for a spacious family car that is comfortable, easy to run and versatile (family journeys, travelling to and from work). The typical buyer is also looking for the best quality-to-price ratio, as well as a safe, attractive car. Brand image is seen as important, too. New Renault Symbol is the first step in the creation by Renault of a range of three-box models. This will enable the brand to build on the thousands of satisfied Clio Symbol buyers and also win over new customers thanks notably to the newcomer's statusenhancing looks and extremely competitive running costs. The car is due to be released for sale on the majority of its markets between September and November 2008.

ELEGANCE AND SEDUCTIVE APPEAL

Symbol's status-enhancing front-end looks and harmonious styling exude refinement and elegance. Inside, the driver and passengers will appreciate the comfortable, carefully-appointed cabin.

Elegant, status-enhancing lines
New Renault Symbol is a new three-box saloon which features attractive styling. It sits on 14- or 15-inch wheels, while its length of 4.26 metres and height of 1.43 metres ensure nicely balanced proportions. The harmonious forms of its headlamps combine with the foglamps and body colour exterior mirrors (except entry level version) to underpin the front end's status-enhancing looks. Seen from the side, its lines are those of a prestigious saloon and the presence of a third lateral window ensures first class visibility. The robust design of the rear is also suggestive of status, an impression which is compounded by the body colour rear bumper and wrap-round rear lights. The use of chrome trimming for the grille surround, rear panel and exterior door handles adds a further note of refined distinction (depending on equipment level). New Renault Symbol can also be ordered with a rear wing (available as an accessory) and 15-inch aluminium alloy wheels which give it further poise and dynamic appeal.

A comfortable, carefully-appointed cabin
The same seductive appeal and level of perceived quality are apparent inside New Renault Symbol, too. The practical interior exudes a sensation of comfort and well-being, while the trim strip of the dashboard brings an added touch of elegance and refinement. The dashboard itself features a rev-counter, warning lights and the trip computer display. The gearlever knob falls readily to hand, while appointments include a chrome steeringwheel trim (depending on version) and the height-adjustable driver's seat.

INEXPENSIVE TO RUN

New Renault Symbol is genuinely inexpensive to run. Its range of latestgeneration powerplants combines performance, fuel efficiency and respect for the environment. The diesel 1.5 dCi 85hp and petrol 1.2 16V 75hp engines deliver best in class fuel consumption of 4.3 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 116g/km) and 5.9 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 140g/km) respectively.

Best level fuel efficiency
New Renault Symbol features segment-leading fuel consumption performance. In their respective categories, the 1.5 dCi 85hp diesel engine and the petrol 1.2 16V 75hp return record low combined cycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for a three-box vehicle of this size, i.e. 4.3 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 116g/km) and 5.9 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 140g/km). To achieve such low figures, Renault's engineers paid especially close attention to New Renault Symbol's aerodynamics (CdA = 0.691) and to keeping weight to a minimum. Indeed, the 1.2 16V 75hp-powered version tips the scales at a low 904kg to give it a best level performance-fuel consumption ratio. New Renault Symbol contributes actively to the '120-140' pledge outlined in the Renault Commitment 2009 plan which saw Renault commit to selling one million vehicles in 2008 that emit less than 140g of CO2/km, including one third that emit less than 120 g/km.

A range of engines that combine performance and low running costs
The New Renault Symbol range features the latest-generation engines that power all Renault's entry level range (Twingo, Clio and Modus), providing the market's best level fuel consumption, performance and acoustic comfort. Depending on country and equipment level, the petrol engine range comprises the 1.2 16V 55kW (75hp), the 1.4 55kW (75hp), the 1.4 16V 72kW (98hp) and the 1.6 16V 77kW (105hp). Meanwhile, the 1.5 dCi diesel engine is available in a choice of two power outputs: 48kW (65hp) and 62kW (85hp). Depending on market, these engines comply with Euro1, Euro3 or Euro4 depollution standards. The two most powerful petrol engines can be mated with fourspeed proactive automatic transmission.

The petrol engine range

The overhead camshaft with roller cam followers and specific inlet calibration have enabled the idling speed to be kept to a low 650rpm which translates into a fuel saving of between two and three per cent when driving in town. Powered by this engine, New Renault Symbol returns the best combined cycle fuel consumption of its class with a score of just 5.9 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 140g/km).

1.4 75hp
With a power output of 55kW (75hp) at 5,500rpm, this 1,390cc engine (K7J) is acclaimed for its robustness and reliability. It combines punch with a comfortable, enjoyable drive. Peak torque of 114Nm (11.6mkg) at 5,500rpm brings out the best in New Renault Symbol's versatility in built up areas and in open country.

1.4 16V 98hp
The maximum power output of this 1,390cc engine is 72kW (98hp) at 6,000rpm to ensure genuine driving pleasure. Peak torque is 127Nm (12.9mkg), 90 per cent of which is available between 2,000 and 5,750rpm. Depending on market, this engine can be ordered with either four-speed proactive automatic transmission or a five-speed manual gearbox.

1.6 16V 105hp (77kW)
The 1.6 16V (K4M) puts out 105hp (77kW) at 6,000rpm and peak torque of 148Nm (15.8mkg) at 3,750rpm. With 90 per cent of the latter available between 2,000 and 5,750rpm, this 1,598cc unit is responsive and pleasant to drive. Fuel consumption has been minimized thanks to the use of roller cam followers and lightweight materials. It is available exclusively with four-speed proactive automatic transmission.

The diesel engine range

1.5 dCi
The diesel range is founded on the 1.5 dCi (K9K) engine, the second-generation 1,600- bar Common Rail injection system of which ensures enhanced combustion quality and, as a result, lower fuel consumption. This engine is acclaimed for its efficiency and acoustic performance, thanks notably to its so-called flexible flywheel which filters out the effects of acyclic movements. This 1,461cc engine is available in a choice of two power outputs: - 48kW (65hp):
The maximum torque (160Nm/16.3mkg) of this version of the 1.5 dCi is available from very low revs and ensures responsive mid-range acceleration. It is ideally suited to New Renault Symbol's versatility and allows all types of journey to be envisaged. Low fuel consumption is a feature of the new model powered by this engine.

62kW (85hp)
This more powerful version of the 1.5 dCi packs an even bigger punch. Thanks to its low inertia turbo and torque of 200Nm (18.9mkg) available from 1,750rpm, it is particularly enjoyable and comfortable to drive. It claims the best fuel consumption of its class with just 4.3 litres/100km over a European-type combined cycle (equivalent to 116g/km of CO2). This version complies with Euro4 antipollution standards.

A TOTALLY REASSURING RIDE

New Renault Symbol offers benchmark travelling comfort and employs the same running gear as Clio II which is acclaimed for the balance it strikes between comfort and outstanding roadholding. Passengers will also appreciate the particularly quiet ride, while thermal comfort has been tailored to deliver top performance in a wide variety of climates, from extreme heat to extreme cold.

Outstanding handling
The handling of New Renault Symbol is predictable in all situations, even on wet roads. The choice of the same running gear as Clio II, a front track dimension of 1.41m and a wheelbase of 2.47m ensure pleasant, surefooted and surprise-free stability and handling. The roadholding has been engineered with two priorities in mind: safety and comfort. The MacPherson-type front suspension has been calibrated to deliver optimal handling and ride comfort. It employs hydraulic dampers and coil springs, and comes with an antiroll bar to minimize body-roll. The diameter of the anti-roll bar is 23mm in the case of versions powered by the 1.2 or 1.4 75hp petrol engines, and 24mm in the case of the other models. The rear suspension is based on a compact and lightweight programmed deflection Hbeam system. Ride comfort is enhanced by the combination of vertically-mounted dampers, variable-rate coil springs and rubber top and bottom spring mountings which effectively filter out the transmission of vibrations to the bodyshell.

Effective stopping power
For advanced braking performance, New Renault Symbol is equipped with solid or vented discs (diameter: 238mm or 259mm) depending on engine, while most versions feature eight-inch drums at the rear. The new vehicle can be ordered with ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution. The power steering ensures precise steering and heightens the sense of safety at higher speeds.

Top level soundproofing
New Renault Symbol boasts best in class acoustic and anti-vibration performance. The choice of the Clio II platform ensures that the cabin is effectively soundproofed. The seal at the base of the windscreen and the use of specific mousse and damping materials for the dashboard and dashboard cowling cut the transmission of powertrain-generated noise and vibrations not only to the cabin but to the outside, too. The addition of extra soundproofing materials such as thicker mousse panels also contributes to minimizing wind and road noise.

Pleasant thermal comfort
New Renault Symbol's thermal comfort has been engineered to meet to the demands dictated by the climates found in a variety of countries. The routing of the vent ducts has been specially thought through to ensure that the temperature climbs rapidly when starting, especially in
  • extreme cold. Depending on market, New Renault Symbol features:

  • an air conditioning system designed for fast, efficient production of cold air (optional),

  • a climate control system designed to keep the cabin temperature consistent (optional),

  • high capacity production of warm air,

  • effective defrosting performance and a flow of warm air delivered rapidly and evenly across the full windscreen

The 1.5 dCi engine is equipped with thermoplungers. This additional electric heating accelerates defrosting and the activation of the heating system. In certain countries such as Russia, the seat backs and cushions can be heated.

A PRACTICAL CAR WITH TOP LEVEL SAFETY
Thanks to its practical and generously dimensioned boot (506dm3), New Renault Symbol is ideally suited to a wide variety of lifestyles and uses, including family holidays, professional needs and weekends away in the country. The new car is uncompromising, too, when it comes to safety and ensures optimal protection for all occupants.

Large, practical boot
New Renault Symbol features one of the largest boots of its class. Its capacity of 506dm3, flat floor and width (>1.10m) make it ideal for all situations, from family holidays to weekends away in the country. The front and rear (depending on version) doors incorporate large stowage bins, while the dashboard houses a six-litre lidded glovebox. Depending on version, stowage solutions can also include map pockets on the backs of the front seats.

Effective occupant protection
New Renault Symbol benefits from Renault's extensive expertise in the realm of safety. To guarantee optimal protection for all occupants, this new three-box model features a long list of safety-enhancing features, not the least of which is the use of high elastic limit (HLE) steel which ensures a strongly resistant cabin while at the same time limiting the latter's deformation, notably in the case of frontal impact. The way its reinforced structure crumples under impact is dictated by pre-programmed properties. The subframe and front bumper beam have been optimized. In the case of side impact, occupants are protected by lateral anti-intrusion reinforcement in the front and rear doors.

New Renault Symbol comes as standard with a driver's side airbag, to which it is possible to add a front passenger airbag and two lateral thorax airbags (depending on version) for further occupant protection from side impact. Occupant restraint can also be enhanced by pyrotechnic pretensioners for the front seats to optimize the way passengers are held in place. New Renault Symbol is equipped with five three-point seatbelts. The front seatbelts incorporate load limiters to protect the thorax. Depending on version, these three-point seatbelts are heightadjustable
to ensure optimal comfort and passenger restraint under impact.

The front and rear (depending on equipment level) adjustable headrests have been designed to avoid injury to the cervical vertebrae in the case of rear impact. These headrests improve the position of the back, as well as the restraint and comfort of the head. Last but not least, for the safety of young passengers, New Renault Symbol's outer rear seats are equipped as standard with Isofix anchorage, as well as kiddy locks for the rear doors.

New Honda JAZZ : Euro version

After the latest press released from The Honda Europe, the full detail of new Honda Jazz was released on August 25, 2008 as followed.

THE NEW HONDA JAZZ
  • New Jazz builds on the qualities of its predecessor
  • Evolutionary development enhances the best features of the previous generation
  • New VTEC engines deliver outstanding economy, better performance and reduced emissions
  • Second generation 6-speed i-SHIFT automated manual transmission introduced
  • Larger, cab-forward design with ACE body structure for uprated impact performance
  • ‘Inside out' flexibility reflects even more spacious, more versatile interior
  • Magic Seats retain their unrivalled versatility - now one-motion dive-down
  • Double-Trunk boot (1.4 models with tyre repair kit) extends interior flexibility to the luggage bay
  • Refined, high quality interior boasting excellent outward visibility
  • Chassis revised for greater agility and comfort
Honda's all-new Jazz builds on the key attributes of its hugely popular predecessor with even more interior space, better functionality and more powerful, more frugal engines, in a stylish, contemporary design

The exterior design is at first glance an evolution rather than a revolution, but this subtle change of appearance is only one small part of the thousands of changes that push the all-new Jazz forward. It retains the concepts of the previous Jazz with its centre fuel tank layout and Magic Seats which gave it world beating interior flexibility. Yet while the best features are retained, including cabin space to rival mid-sized saloons, new Jazz brings change to every area, raising the bar even further and promising to expand on its success in the supermini segment where sales have exceeded over two million around the world since its 2001 launch.

A slightly larger, ‘cab forward' style body brings better visibility and means Jazz is even more spacious, benefiting rear legroom and boot space in particular. The Magic Seats now dive down in one easy action and their versatility is now complemented by a new Double-Trunk boot feature in the luggage bay.

There are greater levels of safety equipment including the introduction of Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, active front seat head restraints and VSA. Larger wheels, revised suspension and a longer wheelbase/wider track bring greater agility while enhancing ride comfort.

And new 90 PS 1.2-litre and 100 PS 1.4-litre i-VTEC engines deliver better performance characteristics while boosting economy to exceptional levels. There's also now the option of a 6-speed automated manual transmission on the 1.4-litre engine - a first in this class.

Greater economy and lower emission from two new engines

New, more powerful petrol engines, capable of outstanding economy, are designed to appeal to customers who might be downsizing as well as those looking to achieve fuel economy comparable to diesel powered models. Their balance between economy and fun-to-drive performance are unmatched in the class. Adopting Honda's VTEC variable valve timing technology, the new 1.2 and 1.4-litre four-cylinder engines are connected to either a 5-speed manual transmission or, on 1.4 models, Honda's i-SHIFT 6-speed automated manual transmission which includes steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Both engines deliver lively performance and plentiful torque across all engine speeds.

The new SIL (Shift Indicator Light) fitted to manual models, similar to that found on the new Accord, provides a visual prompt of the best gear shift points to maximise economy.

New cab forward styling and increased dimensions

At 3900 mm long, 1695 mm wide and 1525 mm tall, the new Jazz occupies its own unique niche between superminis and compact MPVs, offering the style of the former and the practicality of the latter.

Overall height remains the same, but the length of the new Jazz is up by 55 mm and it is also slightly wider - by 20 mm. A wheelbase increase of 50 mm, and front and rear track increases of 35 mm and 30 mm, respectively, aid handling stability.

Despite those increased dimensions, the turning circle at 9.8 m kerb to kerb is no larger than that of the previous Jazz and together with improved visibility, the new car's around town abilities are even better.

Furthermore, Jazz is even easier to get in and out of, thanks to wider-opening rear doors which now open in three steps like their front counterparts for added convenience in tight parking spots.

The key styling theme of the new Jazz is its ‘cab forward' look with a windscreen ‘pushed' forwards to give a virtually seamless curve flowing from front to rear bumpers. There's a reassuring face with large headlamps that curve along the car's flanks, an upward curving front bumper and a sporty honeycomb grille.

The wide track, long wheelbase chassis imparts a strong sense of solidity, emphasised by muscular wheelarches and larger wheels on all models - 15 inch steel items on 1.2 models and 1.4 LS, 15 inch 5-spoke alloys on 1.4 ES and 16 inch twin 5-spoke alloys on 1.4 EX.

Rear styling is equally distinctive with a narrowing of the upper body towards the rear and a rear roof line that slopes downwards without compromising rear passenger headroom. A black, high gloss trim above the licence plate ‘extends' the window line downwards to give a unique rear appearance.

Jazz 1.4 LS is also offered with a Sport Pack which includes a larger front grille, additional side sill panels, rear bumper diffuser and 16 inch alloy wheels.

New ACE body structure

Even more efficient safety performance results from the introduction of the ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, a concept that is being progressively rolled out across the Honda range. is composed of highly efficient energy-absorbing polygonal cross-section side frames, a bulkhead (upper frame) which absorbs the upper part of the collision energy, and a lower member. This helps prevent misalignment between vehicles of different sizes and construction. It also provides multiple energy absorbing pathways to disperse impact energy and prevent cabin deformation.

Standard on all models are dual front and side airbags, full length side curtain airbags and three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions, those in the front with load-limiting pretensioners. The front passenger airbag can also be deactivated to allow a rear facing child seat to be fitted to the front seat and for the first time Jazz is equipped with seatbelt reminders for both the front and rear seats. Front seats are also fitted with active headrests to minimise the potential for whiplash injuries.

The new Jazz, like all Honda models has been subject to the manufacturer's rigorous car-to-car crash testing in the R&D centre at Tochigi. These crash tests which are conducted to enhance real world crash safety are done using a number of different models with different sizes and weights. By using a range of vehicles, Honda is able to ensure the Jazz is optimised to minimise injuries to occupants of both vehicles in an impact.

Two ISOFIX fittings in the left and right rear seats together with tether anchors in the roof ensure correct child seat installation.

Larger, more refined cabin with even better functionality

The ingenious interior layout of the previous Jazz, with its compact suspension and centrally-mounted fuel tank liberating more load space, together with the increased external dimensions of the new model, mean interior comfort has been taken to a new level.

The slightly increased length and width have clearly benefited passenger space, but a windscreen ‘pushed' further forward has also paid dividends making the new Jazz the roomiest, most flexible contender in the class.

Rear seat passengers now have 18 mm greater kneeroom, while the distance between front and rear passengers is up by 30 mm. The slightly wider body also means shoulder room increases by 44 mm in the front and 43 mm in the rear.

Visibility gets a considerable boost, too. Reduced width A-pillars, a larger windscreen and quarter windows three times the size of those in the previous model make for more relaxed driving, while retractable rear headrests ensure the view out of the rear window is now totally unobscured.

Magic Seats now one-motion dive-down

Given the popularity of the previous Jazz's innovative ‘cinema' style rear seats, it comes as little surprise that Honda chose to offer a similar arrangement in the new car; but while the latest Magic Seats operate on the same principle, they are even more convenient since they have a one-motion, dive-down operation. No longer is there a need to move the front seats forward to collapse the rear seats. Instead, thanks to headrests that are virtually flush with the seatback, the 60:40 split rear seats are able to clear the front seats even when the latter are slid back to their rearmost position.

The resulting flat floor in this Utility Mode measures 1720 mm in length, enough to accommodate three 26 inch mountain bikes with their front wheels in place. Load length in Long Mode is even greater - slide the front passenger seat fully forward, recline the seat back and you have 2.4 m long load space.

When lifting the rear seats up again, the seat bases stay locked to the seat backs, in which position they can be left - Tall Mode - to create a useful secondary load area between front and rear seats and able to swallow items up to 1280 mm tall - and now even easier to access given that the rear doors open wider. There's even a storage compartment in the base of the left hand rear seat, able to accommodate, amongst other things, the owner's manual.

New Double-Trunk boot feature (1.4-litre models with tyre repair kit)

The outstanding practicality of the Magic Seats concept is complemented in the new Jazz by a flexible luggage area based on similar principles to the arrangement found in the Honda CR-V. Standard on 1.4 models, which are equipped with a tyre repair kit, the Double-Trunk boot features an underfloor storage area concealed by a double hinged panel - Regular Mode. The 230 mm deep, 64 litre capacity lower compartment is ideal for stashing sports gear or wet items, and once covered, won't soil other luggage.

The floor can be removed altogether or folded up against the rear seats to make full use of the total depth available - ideal for particularly tall objects (Tall Mode). Alternatively, rather than folding the complete panel against the seat backs, its rear half can be folded up to create a load shelf at half height - so creating a double load space - Upper/lower Mode. Heavier items can be stored below, while lighter items can be placed on the upper shelf, and since it incorporates a load net, is perfect for carrying awkwardly shaped items, preventing them from moving around.

Total luggage space available is 399 litres (VDA) in models with a tyre repair kit, greater than that of some compact MPVs and class-leading in the supermini sector. The previous Jazz had a total of 380 litres (VDA).

Refined cabin environment

High quality, pleasant-to-the touch materials, stylish design and tasteful colours give the cabin a more upmarket feel.

More comfortable front seats with better support, a driver's footrest, a height adjustable driver's seat, a steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake and larger rear seats are just some of the features that contribute to the more cosseting, more relaxed cabin environment. Extra sound insulation and the increased body rigidity also play their part in making the Jazz a pleasant place to be. And for a real sense of spaciousness, the Jazz 1.4 EX is equipped with a panorama roof that extends over the rear seats for a great aerial view. Heat absorbing glass and a power sun shade ensure a comfortable cabin environment all year round.

1.4 ES and EX models add heated front seats and a leather trimmed steering wheel and gear shift knob, while the EX also has front and rear seat armrests and the added convenience of cruise control and automatic lights and wipers.

Exterior mirrors are heated on 1.2 LS and above, and power retractable on 1.4 LS and above.

The three-meter instrument cluster is permanently back-lit to ensure good legibility at all times and features silver surrounds, gun metallic-finish dials and a raised red acrylic scale. All models feature soft-touch indicators that deliver three indicator flashes for effortless motorway lane changing.

A useful multi-information display set within the centre of the speedometer provides a wide range of information including a speed alarm, instant and average fuel economy, vehicle range, outside temperature and a service indicator - controlled by steering wheel buttons.

iPod compatible

Stylishly integrated into the fascia, the single CD/radio fitted to all models from 1.2 LS upwards offers MP3/WMA playback capability and speed-dependent volume adjustment. The four speakers are supplemented on 1.4 ES and EX models with a pair of tweeters together with a USB adapter located in the centre console storage box; this enables fifth generation iPods and a variety of other portable music devices to be played via the Jazz's audio system while providing simultaneous charging (depending on type).

The Jazz 1.4 EX also comes with a Bluetooth wireless mobile phone interface allowing hands-free operation via a steering wheel mounted switch.

Lots of handy storage spaces are scattered throughout the cabin and there are no less than 10 cup/bottle holders - two at the front of the centre console, two behind the handbrake, one at each end of the fascia, and one in each of the four door panels. Other storage includes upper and lower gloveboxes, a pocket to the right of the steering wheel, a flexible compartment in the centre console and, on most models, a passenger seatback pocket.

Air conditioning is standard on 1.2 LS and above, with automatic operation on 1.4 models and the new system is more efficient and with added cooling ability. 1.4 ES and EX models feature a valve contained in the upper glove compartment which can be opened to provide a stream of cool air, so enabling a drinks can or bottle to be chilled.

Honda i-SHIFT (6-speed automated manual transmission)

Honda's i-SHIFT 6-speed automated manual transmission first introduced in the Civic range, is available as an option on 1.4-litre models. Offering better economy than either a conventional automatic or a CVT, it gives the driver a choice of either Auto Mode for a more relaxed driving style, or Manual Mode for a sportier driving experience, using the gear lever or steering wheel mounted paddles.

The switch between Manual and Automatic Modes is selected by moving the gearshift to the left of the main gate, while sequential changes in Manual Mode are made by moving the lever forwards (to change up) or backwards (to change down) in the main gate.

Only short movements are required, adding to the sporty driving feel, and the clutch actuator provides particularly smooth and quick changes.

When in Automatic Mode, it is perfectly possible to revert to Manual momentarily by switching to paddle operation. In this way, the driver can change down a couple of gears for added acceleration.

i-SHIFT models are also equipped with Hill Start Assist (HSA) which momentarily holds the brakes when pulling away from standstill on an incline, thus preventing roll back.

Responsive driving dynamics, enhanced comfort

Larger wheels - 15 inch or 16 inch depending on grade - hint at enhancements to the Jazz's suspension and steering which are intended to provide greater agility while building on ride comfort.

Body rigidity is considerably enhanced, in particular lateral rigidity at the front of the car which has permitted sharper handling while allowing more supple suspension characteristics. Overall stability and grip benefit from the longer wheelbase, wider track and larger wheels, but there have also been a number of changes to the geometry and structure of the front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension. These include revised bushes, caster angle and trail at the front and a different torsion beam cross section and longer trailing arms at the rear. Improved rear steer characteristics further improve stability.

Improved feedback and stability characterise the substantially revised electric power steering which builds on the sense of driving enjoyment achieved by improvements in other areas of the chassis. Strengthened components, increased capacity and the geometry changes mentioned above produce a lighter steering feel at low speeds, good stability at high speeds and improved on centre feel.

All models can be equipped with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) which maintains control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres using brake intervention and engine torque management.

Stopping ability has been increased with larger brake front callipers, while revised brake pedal characteristics have improved feel. Front ventilated discs and rear discs are matched with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist.

Worldwide success

Since its launch in Japan in 2001, Jazz has gone on to become Honda's most successful small car. Its clever packaging, value for money and strong residuals have proved a winning formula, helping to retain customers year after year. It has gone on to become a global car sold in 115 countries with annual sales of around 400,000 and total sales to date worldwide exceeding two million units. Jazz is now produced in six factories in five countries.

The new Jazz is already on sale in Japan - where it is known as Fit - and was awarded the 2007-2008 Japan Car of the Year Award - emulating the very first Honda Fit in 2001. The Fit is also available in the North American market where it has proved a huge success since its introduction 2 years ago. The new Fit will go on sale in November.

In Europe Honda is planning to expand sales from approximately 80,000 to over 100,000 cars a year. The previous generation Jazz has predominantly appealed to ‘post family' customers - older couples without children or whose kids have left home and for many their only car - and the additional enhancements of the new model will continue to meet, and indeed exceed, those customers' expectations to ensure good repeat business.

Honda also believes the new model has the potential to appeal to mature families - typically parents aged 40-50 with a double income, often with two cars, and who are willing to pay more for premium and distinctive features. An easy driving style and low running costs are a must, and the versatility of the new Jazz should appeal when ferrying children, on shopping trips and in general city driving. Younger families, daily commuters, as well as user chooser company car drivers looking to minimise their taxation levels are secondary targets.

Above all, Jazz should appeal for its unique ability to provide the style of B-segment hatchbacks matched to the versatility of B-segment MPVs.

The new Honda Jazz will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October before sales commence before the end of the year.

A wide choice of accessories

Jazz offers an extensive accessory range to enable customers to tailor their car exactly to their requirements.

BODY AND SAFETY

  • New cab forward styling
  • Longer, wider body
  • Increased wheelbase and track
  • New Advanced Compatibility Engineering body further improves impact characteristics
  • Enhanced body rigidity
  • Six airbags, active front seat headrests, two ISOFIX fixtures, five 3-point seatbelts, front with pretensioners
  • Eleven Exterior Colours with five new Tones
Much of Jazz's success has undoubtedly stemmed from its clever packaging, and these innovative elements are retained in the new model. However, while the styling has moved in an evolutionary rather than revolutionary direction, Jazz is even more spacious inside, maximising comfort and cargo space, to give ‘inside out flexibility'.

The innovative centre tank layout - in which the fuel tank is located beneath the front seats in its own protective perimeter frame - is carried over for its ability to confer cabin space and practicality, but both wheelbase and overall length are increased - by 50 mm and 55 mm, respectively, while body width is up 20 mm.

A simultaneous 35 mm increase in the front track and 30 mm increase at the rear, together with the longer wheelbase, contributes to greater handling stability but also helps to optimise the steering angle for a tight kerb-to-kerb turning circle of 9.8 m (10.4 m wall-to-wall) - identical to the previous Jazz - so retaining small car manoeuvrability and great in-town driving performance.

Jazz is now even easier to climb into and out of thanks to rear doors that open wider - to a maximum 80 degrees - and like the front doors, now in three steps for added convenience in tight parking situations.

There are now 11 body colours offered, five of which are new: vibrant Deep Sapphire Blue and Premium Deep Violet pearlescents and Cerulean Blue, Sherbert Blue and Cool Rose metallics. They join Taffeta White and Milano Red; Alabaster Silver and Storm Silver metallics; and Crystal Black and Helios Yellow pearlescents.

Jazz's unique position

At 3900 mm long, 1695 mm wide and 1525 mm tall, the new Jazz occupies its own unique niche between B-segment superminis and B-segment compact MPVs, offering the style of the former and the practicality of the latter.

The exterior styling is intended to express both spaciousness and dynamic motion and a key element is the ‘cab forward' look with slim front pillars and windscreen pushed further forward to create a single flowing curve from the front to rear bumpers.

Clearly defined and reassuring, the face of the Jazz features large headlamps curving along the flanks of the front wings, a raised centre section to the bonnet, and a sporty honeycomb grille that adopts Honda's hexagonal motif. The bumper sweeps up on either side to follow the line of the headlamps, and the trapezoidal lower grille adds to the sense of stability of the design.

The new Jazz imparts a sense of stability thanks to the wider track and relatively long wheelbase and emphasised by prominent, muscular rear wings. The body sides are characterised by a rising shoulder line and a distinctive feature line that extends forwards from the rear wheel arches. 1.4-litre models feature indicators incorporated into the exterior mirrors.

Excellent aerodynamic efficiency is helped by an upper body that narrows towards the rear and a rear roof section which slopes downwards without compromising rear seat headroom.

On the tailgate, a high gloss trim above the licence plate recess ‘extends' the window line downwards to create a unique rear graphic. LED tail lights and third brake light add a premium touch and greater efficiency.

The fuel filler is now concealed by a ‘push' type flap making it easier to open.

Sport Pack

The Jazz 1.4 LS can be specified with an optional Sport Pack consisting of a number of unique body styling elements. A larger front grille complemented by a main grille finished in gunmetal mesh with a satin finished outer moulding distinguishes the unique front bumper, while front foglamps are further inset than those on other models. Additional side sill panels emphasise the car's wider stance, while the rear bumper has a diffuser element in its lower edge and a wider tailpipe completes the unique rear end. Finally, 16 inch alloy wheels provide a finishing touch to the more aggressive appearance.

New comprehensive safety package

Developed in the vehicle-to-vehicle crash testing facility at Honda's Tochigi R&D base, the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure is now a well-established weapon in Honda's safety armoury. The new Jazz is the latest range to benefit from this highly effective technology which provides a protective cocoon for occupants in a variety of real-world crash conditions. These may include a frontal collision between vehicles of differing heights, weights and frame construction.

A conventional body structure generally concentrates the loads from the impact through two pathways running longitudinally through the lower portion of the frame. The Advanced Compatibility EngineeringTM (ACETM) body structure of the Jazz, is composed of highly efficient energy-absorbing polygonal cross-section side frames, a bulkhead (upper frame) which absorbs the upper part of the collision energy, and a lower member that helps prevent misalignment of the frames of the vehicles involved. This prevents cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple major load bearing pathways - and away from the passenger compartment. At the same time, the structure reduces the chance of vertical or lateral misalignment between the Jazz and another vehicle's safety structures.

Impact energy is directed into the immensely strong floor structure formed by the cross members and longitudinal members protecting the central fuel tank on all four sides. This structure provides exceptional stiffness which also benefits side impact performance to maintain cabin integrity.

The new Jazz also incorporates many of the pedestrian-protection design features already familiar from recent Honda models. Research shows that features such as these dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle. Features include windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges, as well as an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

Dual front and side airbags are supplemented on all models with standard equipment full length side curtain airbags to protect occupants front and rear. There are three-point seatbelts in all seating positions, those in the front seats with load limiting pretensioners. Two ISOFIX fittings in both the left and right rear seats together with tether anchor points in the rear roof ensure correct installation and provide secure child seat mounting points.

Active headrests

The new Jazz is also equipped with front seat active headrests which reduce the likelihood of neck injury in rear impacts. As the occupant is pushed against the seat back, a rigid plate in the seat presses a link to the headrest pushing it up and forward to support the head.

As well as the introduction of the ACE body structure, the body rigidity of the new Jazz is considerably enhanced and makes a major contribution to its class leading refinement and ride comfort. Lateral rigidity at the front of the car is up 164 per cent, for example, while vertical rigidity is 19 per cent better; equivalent figures at the rear are 48 and 25 per cent, respectively. It means that the suspension has been tuned for even greater levels of comfort and sharper handling.

Key changes include :
  • Closed, rather than open, section front bulkhead - increases front body rigidity without increasing weight
  • Reinforced rear damper mounting and rear frame section enlarged
  • Straight side frames introduced
  • A-pillar base, B-pillar to side sill connection and rear frame modified for greater rigidity
  • Modified mating structure for rear cross member panel.
  • Unified floor cross member reduces weight
Jazz is covered by a 12 year corrosion warranty.

INTERIOR

  • Central fuel tank layout retained
  • Larger body brings increased rear seat accommodation, more shoulder room and larger luggage bay
  • Unique Magic Seats now one-motion dive-down
  • New Double-Trunk boot adds to luggage bay flexibility (1.4 models with tyre repair kit)
  • Improved visibility front and rear thanks to larger windscreen, slimmer A-pillars and retractable rear seat headrests
  • Improved refinement, materials and enhanced quality create relaxing, comfortable cabin
  • Availability of USB adapter for iPod connection and Bluetooth HFT operation
  • Panorama roof on 1.4 EX
The ingenious layout of the previous Jazz, with its short nose design, compact suspension and unique centre fuel tank layout liberating additional interior space to place cabin accommodation on a par with many C-segment models, is retained in the new Jazz. The increased dimensions of the body and a windscreen positioned further forward means, however, that there is even more room in the latest model, making it the roomiest, most flexible contender in its class, and in some aspects better than B-segment MPVs.

It is even more practical. The new model offers the widely acclaimed Magic Seats that have proved such a popular feature of the previous Jazz, but they now feature a one-motion, dive-down functionality which doesn't require the front seats to be moved forward first. And luggage space, up from 380 litres to 399 litres (tyre repair kit-equipped models), has greater versatility on 1.4 models with the introduction of the Double-Trunk boot feature. There are also a number of thoughtfully designed additional storage features spread around the cabin.

The new Jazz offers a larger, more relaxing cabin in which seats are designed for greater comfort, all round visibility is significantly better and increased dimensions allow passengers more room to stretch out in a spacious and airy interior.

Much of the car's increased length is devoted to improved rear seat comfort and passengers now have 18 mm greater kneeroom and 8 mm more headroom. The distance between front and rear passengers is up by 30mm compared to the previous model which already offered a tandem distance on a par with much larger cars. Shoulder room is up 44mm in the front, 43 mm in the rear.

Honda's design team has placed particular emphasis on improving visibility for the driver. Moving the A-pillar further forward plays a significant part and together with retractable rear seat headrests, the driver has a considerably improved view both front and rear.

Larger glass area

A-pillar width reduced by 23 mm, a windscreen 25 mm wider and 205 mm taller, together with redesigned wipers that sit well below the line of sight, mean forward visibility has been improved by some 20 per cent overall. Furthermore, the front quarter windows are approximately three times the size of those in the previous Jazz and the door mirror mounts are actually reduced in size, even though the mirror surface area is increased by almost a third.

Retractable rear seat headrests result in rearward visibility up from 72 to virtually 100 per cent.

Added serenity

Even greater refinement means the Jazz's cabin is a pleasant place to be thanks to the greater body rigidity which minimises noise and vibration during idling as well as any booming noise when cruising. Noise from the engine during acceleration and road noise are also reduced considerably thanks to extra use of lightweight sound absorbing materials in the roof, carpet and dashboard.

New front seats are fitted with springs and padding optimised for greater comfort and better support and grip during cornering, as well as active headrests for greater safety. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel with a wider range of adjustment, 50 mm driver's seat height adjustment via a ratchet lever, wider pedal spacing and a new footrest for the left foot ensure a comfortable position for the vast majority of drivers.

Rear seat passengers also benefit from larger seats, now 20 mm wider, 15 mm deeper and with seat cushions 10 mm thicker.

Front seats are heated on 1.4 ES and EX models, while the EX also has front and rear seat armrests.

Jazz's interior is upholstered in two colour combinations: 1.2-litre models are equipped with a blue/black fabric, with blue seat and door trim inserts, while all other 1.4-litre models have a black/dark grey treatment.

The fascia is set low for good forward visibility and features a large three meter instrument cluster with central speedometer, a tachometer on the left and a fuel gauge to the right. Permanent back lit illumination ensures good legibility even in low light conditions. Silver meter surrounds are complemented by gun metallic-finish dials with a red acrylic scale raised above the surface to create a 3D effect.

Contained within the centre of the speedometer face is an LCD multi-information display showing a variety of information including a speed alarm, instant and average fuel economy, range, outside temp and a service indicator based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) - controls positioned on the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle through the displays.

The indicators have a soft touch mode: gently touching the appropriate lever causes that indicator to flash three times before self-cancelling, making lane changes on motorways, for example, effortless.

Audio systems

All models from 1.2 LS and above are equipped with a single CD/audio system with MP3/WMA playback capability. Its stylish face panel seamlessly integrates into the fascia and features a black background LCD and auxiliary jack. Volume automatically adjusts in accordance with vehicle speed. The simple-to-use rotary control is of the push-turn-push type. A rear-mounted micro antenna with automatic gain control can improve sensitivity when radio reception is weak.

On 1.4 ES and EX models, the four high quality polypropylene speakers are supplemented with a pair of tweeters, while fifth generation and later iPods and a variety of other digital audio players can now be played via the audio system using the USB adapter located in the centre console storage box. Playback using the main audio controls also provides simultaneous charging of the device (depending on type).

Bluetooth-enabled

The Jazz 1.4 EX is provided with a Bluetooth wireless mobile phone interface, allowing hands-free operation, controlled via a steering wheel-mounted switch. A series of speakers and microphones installed in the car can connect to any Bluetooth-enabled communications device, allowing calls to be made safely while driving.

Features include display of the phone number, phone mode and battery status in the multi-information display; continuation of a phone conversation started outside the car, simply by turning on the ignition to ‘ACC' and then switching to hands free; and automatic transfer of numbers which can be accessed with HFT and speech recognition - in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Cabin storage

New Jazz comes complete with plenty of handy in-cabin storage able to swallow a large amount of family clutter.

Separated into upper and lower compartments and separated by a shallow tray, the two-tier glovebox offers greater versatility. The upper section comes complete with pen and card holders and, on 1.4 ES/EX models, a valve which can be opened to provide a stream of cooling air to chill a bottle or drinks can.

There are no less than 10 cup/bottle holders spread around the cabin - one at either end of the instrument panel, two in the centre console ahead of the gear lever, two behind the handbrake, and one in each of the four door pockets set into the curved door panels.

The versatile front console storage can also accommodate a variety of items such as drinks cartons, iPods, mobile phones or a box of tissues. Added flexibility is provided by a subdivider which can be turned through 180 degrees to vary the storage dimensions. To the right of the steering wheel is a fascia pocket.

There is now also a handy compartment in the base of the left hand rear seat, accessible when it is folded upwards. Opened by unscrewing two knurled wheels, it is able to accommodate the owner's manual.

The air conditioning - a manual system on the 1.2 LS, and automatic on 1.4 models - offers improved cooling performance with increased air flow, while using less refrigerant and power; the fan is also quieter. The high performance dust filter can be supplemented with an optional high performance deodorant filter.

Air conditioning controls are spaced around the audio system within easy reach of the driver.

1.4 EX panorama roof

For the ultimate in cabin airiness and a real sense of spaciousness, the 1.4 EX model comes with a full length panorama roof. 721 mm wide and 938 mm long, it extends back far enough to give rear seat passengers the same sky view as those in front. Although the glass has high heat absorbing properties, there is also a power sun shade which can be opened and closed at the touch of a switch to create a comfortable cabin environment all year round..

Jazz's acclaimed Magic Seats now even more convenient

One of the most distinctive elements of the previous generation Jazz and a key factor in its popularity was the Magic Seats design acclaimed for its flexibility and multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. The new Jazz not surprisingly retains the arrangement but is now even more user-friendly. Front seats no longer need to be slid forward to give the rear seat sufficient clearance as it is folded down. Instead, even with the front seats in their rearmost position, the 60:40 split rear seats with their retractable headrests can be collapsed in a simple ‘one-motion' dive-down action by means of a lever located on the outside shoulder of the seat.

In this ‘Utility Mode', Jazz offers a perfectly flat load floor, a maximum 1720 mm in length, sufficient to swallow three 26 inch mountain bikes with front wheels still attached, stood upright. The actual surface area equates to two large and two extra-large Samsonite suitcases laid flat; similarly, three golf bags can be laid lengthwise. With the larger rear seat portion alone collapsed, there is sufficient space and length to accommodate a surfboard laid flat; or two 26 inch mountain bikes stood upright. The available load length is even greater in ‘Long Mode' where the front passenger seat is slid fully forward and its seatback fully reclined - opening up a 2.4 m long load space.

To return the rear seats to a seating position, you simply lift the assembly back up; the seat bottom remains locked to the seat back and is simply released by pulling up the leg frame and the seat bottom folded down.

This locking seat base action adds further innovation and Jazz's unique offer, since in ‘Tall Mode' the seat bases can be left raised and locked against the seat backs, creating a second load area between front and rear seats capable of holding a variety of objects up to 1280 mm in height, such as tall plants, two mountain bikes with their front wheels removed, a folded wheelchair, and all manner of other items. And since the rear doors now open wider, it is even easier to make full use of this feature.

Magic Seats now complemented by Double-Trunk boot

The same levels of innovation are found in the luggage bay of the new Jazz which now offers a class-leading capacity that betters some B-segment compact MPVs.

Beneath the boot floor lies a secondary storage compartment and on 1.4 models the provision of an emergency tyre repair kit in place of a space-saver spare wheel frees up this space, adding an extra 64 litres to give an exceptional load capacity of 399 litres (VDA) compared to the 380 litres of the previous generation Jazz (9 litres of underfloor storage with space saver wheel).

A new Double-Trunk boot system is also introduced on 1.4-litre Jazz models with tyre repair kit, giving owners greater convenience and perfectly complementing the Magic Seats arrangement.

In ‘Regular Mode', the under floor storage area is concealed by a 100 kg-capacity double hinged panel. This panel can be folded against the rear seats in ‘Tall Mode' to make use of the full depth of the load space enabling particularly tall objects to be carried.

Alternatively, rather than folding the complete panel against the rear seat backs, its rear half can be raised into a horizontal position, and supported by fixtures in the load bay sides, to create a mid-height storage shelf and effectively separating the luggage space into upper and lower sections - the so called ‘Upper/lower Mode'. The net contained within the upper panel is perfect for carrying irregularly shaped objects that won't sit flat.

The 230 mm deep under floor space is ideal for storing sports gear or raincoats and umbrellas and once the lid is on, you don't have to worry about soiling other luggage.

A load lip 605 mm from the ground makes for easy loading and unloading.

Finally, a useful shopping bag hook is located just inside the left hand side of the luggage bay.

DRIVETRAIN
  • New i-VTEC 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol engines
  • Lower CO2 emissions, enhanced fuel economy and improved performance
  • Tumble inducing intake ports
  • Low friction engine design
  • Drive-by-wire throttle control
  • Standard 5-speed manual transmission
  • Latest 6-speed i-SHIFT automated manual transmission with paddle shifters optional on 1.4-litre engine
Honda has set out to provide the new Jazz with a best in class balance between fuel economy and fun-to-drive performance. In place of the two-valve i-DSI technology used in the previous Jazz, the latest range is powered by newly-developed four-valve i-VTEC petrol engines of either 1.2-litre or 1.4-litre capacity that deliver lively performance and plentiful torque across all engine speeds.

A capacity of 1198cc makes the new 1.2-litre engine slightly smaller than its predecessor yet power rises from 78 to 90 PS at a slightly higher 6000 rpm; similarly torque increases from 110 Nm to 114 Nm at 4900 rpm.

The new 1.4-litre engine shares the same 1339cc swept volume as the previous i-DSI engine but output is up from 83 to 100 PS, again at a slightly higher 6000 rpm. Torque is boosted to 127 Nm at 4800 rpm compared to the i-DSI engine's 119 Nm at 2800 rpm.

i-VTEC

Honda's familiar VTEC variable valve timing system helps to make possible the balance between efficiency and power and employs a two rocker arm design per cylinder on the intake valves. This incorporates friction-reducing roller followers for each pair of intake valves, along with intake cam lobes configured to optimise both low and high speed operation. Depending on engine load and engine speed, an electronic controller determines which cam profile will be used and exactly how the intake valves will operate.

At low revs, where low lift and shorter duration provide optimal operation, the timing of the two intake valves is staggered and the lift asymmetrically skewed in favour of the primary valve. This helps to create a strong swirl effect within the combustion chamber that increases the efficiency of the burn process. At higher rpm, a hydraulically actuated spool valve causes a locking pin to engage the secondary rocker arm with the primary one, transitioning the secondary valve into a long-duration mode that increases the volume of air/fuel mixture moving into the combustion chamber. This additional mixture helps increase power at high engine speeds.

The head utilises a narrow, 30-degree design between the intake and exhaust valves, contributing to the overall compact size.

As well as VTEC valve-train technology, other notable features are an improved combustion chamber shape, a drive-by-wire throttle control, a composite intake manifold with a long runner design that contributes to good low and mid-range torque output and friction reducing technologies. These include roller-tipped rocker arms, an offset crankshaft/connecting rod design, plateau honing of the cylinders for a smoother surface, a special piston surface coating which is better at oil retention and optimised piston ring tension. A narrow-width timing chain and tensioner reduce weight.

High-strength ‘fracture split' connecting rods provide a significant reduction in the inertial mass of moving parts for increased efficiency (‘fracture-split' refers to the manufacturing process whereby the connecting rods are forged in one piece and then their crankshaft ends are broken, creating a lighter and stronger rod with a perfectly fitted bearing cap).

The exhaust manifold is cast directly into the alloy cylinder head to reduce weight and allows the optimal positioning of the primary close-coupled catalytic converter; together with exhaust gas recirculation and a high accuracy air/fuel ratio control - comprising intake air flow sensor, linear air flow sensor ahead of the close coupled cat and a rear oxygen sensor ahead of the rear cat - new Jazz offers excellent emissions performance.

Electronic drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle control optimises the throttle aperture when the accelerator is depressed for quick and precise delivery of fuel to the engine, so maximising efficiency.

The end result is an engine design with good low end torque, high-revving power and a high level of fuel efficiency.

Transmissions

1.2 and 1.4-litre models are equipped with an evolution of the previous 5-speed manual transmission with gear ratios optimised for driveability whilst ensuring good fuel economy.

Key improvements include a revised clutch pedal stroke, carbon-type synchroniser on third gear to minimise shift load, crisper shifting through reduced clutch disc inertia and improved refinement.

Manual transmission-equipped models feature the new SIL (Shift Indicator Light) within the centre of the rev counter, also found on the latest Honda Accord. Providing the driver with a visual prompt of the best gear shift points to maximise economy, it has been demonstrated to provide meaningful fuel economy savings.

i-SHIFT (6-speed automated manual transmission)

As well as a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 1.4-litre engine can be teamed up with Honda's latest i-SHIFT transmission, first introduced in the Civic range. The 6-speed automated manual transmission in this vehicle offers better fuel economy than is possible with either a conventional automatic or a CVT (continuously variable transmission).

The unit is a development of the system first fitted to the Civic, with improvements made including; reduced gear change times, smoother shifts and more intelligent automatic mode shift logic.

The driver can choose between either an Auto Mode for a more relaxed driving style, or for a sportier driving experience, Manual Mode via the gearshift or steering wheel mounted paddles - that on the left controlling downshifts, that on the right upshifts.

Automatic Mode is selected by moving the gearshift to the left of the main gate, while sequential changes in Manual Mode are made by moving the lever either forwards (up changes) or backwards (down changes) in the main gate or by using the paddles.

The shift lever requires only a short - 13.5 mm - movement to select the next gear so emulating a sporty driving feel. Furthermore, reverse is in the conventional manual transmission position, thus permitting selection without requiring a visual check from the driver.

The conventional clutch pedal is replaced by a Transmission Control Unit that controls the clutch via an actuator with hydraulic power generated by a DC motor; gear changes are smooth and quick as a result, without compromising the system's sportiness.

It is perfectly possible to override automatic mode momentarily, by switching to paddle operation - so for example the driver can change down a couple of gears for added acceleration..

The selected gear in both automatic and manual modes is shown in a display located within the fuel gauge dial, with the letter ‘A' supplementing the gear number when automatic is selected.

The i-SHIFT gearbox is designed to adapt to different driving conditions by means of a series of shift maps. For example, when driving downhill, the system will shift down to provide engine braking. Similarly, shifting is prevented through a corner if there is any possibility of upsetting the car's balance.

Other safeguards mean that at low rpm the system will not shift up, even if instructed to do so, thus preventing malfunction and engine knocking. And there is an automatic upshift just before the red line in order to avoid damaging the engine by over revving. When the car stops in fourth gear, the system will automatically shift back to first in both modes.

After starting the engine with the lever in neutral, the system defaults to automatic mode. When manual mode is selected, the driver may opt to start in 2nd gear. In-gear parking is also possible by turning the engine off when the shift indicator shows either first gear or reverse.

i-SHIFT models are also equipped with Hill Start Assist (HSA). When pulling away from standstill on an incline, HSA continues to apply the brakes for a couple of seconds as the driver moves his or her foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator, thus preventing roll back.

CHASSIS
  • Greater agility, improved ride comfort
  • Longer wheelbase, wider track and 15 inch or 16 inch wheels
  • Modified front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension
  • Revised geometry and uprated EPS components improve steering feel and stability
  • Uprated brakes
  • VSA available on all models
  • Turning circle unchanged for excellent manoeuvrability
Together with the more powerful engines, greater in cabin refinement and a series of suspension revisions, new Jazz offers greater agility and pleasant, more comfortable driving dynamics. Higher body rigidity ensures a more responsive, and at the same time more supple, suspension.

Key improvements include the increased wheelbase and wider track for greater stability, larger wheels, improved steering feel and a suspension that retains the same basic layout but benefits from a number of changes in layout and geometry. And despite the slightly increased dimensions, the turning circle kerb to kerb is identical to the previous Jazz at a tight 9.8m, ensuring superb manoeuvrability about town.

Geometry revisions

The front MacPherson struts feature optimised geometry and a revised lower suspension arm bushing which rather than working in a vertical direction - as in the previous Jazz - requiring it to be very rigid to resist vertical movement, is now located longitudinally. Lower arm input twists the bush axis for more stable suspension characteristics, allowing the bush to have a lower spring rate.

Front wheel caster angle has been increased from 2.2 to 3.3 degrees and the caster trail from 5 to 20 mm which has the effect of boosting straight line stability.

The new Jazz's rear suspension continues to use a compact H-shaped torsion beam which means the load floor can be kept low with a resulting increase in luggage capacity.

The ‘H' section has been revised, however, while other changes include a 39 mm longer trailing arm, a trailing arm bush capacity increased by almost 50 per cent and, by moving the spring and damper assemblies further back relative to the wheel, a spring lever ratio changed from 1.5 to 1.1. Those changes translate on the road to a much smoother, more comfortable ride.

Rear roll steer characteristics have also been improved for increased stability during cornering. Over the total rear wheel movement, the degree of camber change and the amount of toe in under compression and toe out on rebound are all increased.

Vehicle Stability Assist

All Jazz models can be equipped with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system which is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking independently on all four wheels as necessary and managing the engine torque systems.

At its simplest level, VSA has a traction control function whereby it detects wheel slip under acceleration and coordinates the use of braking and engine torque to regain traction. In situations where the driven wheels are on surfaces with different levels of traction, such as a partially wet road surface, the system applies braking action to the wheel that's slipping, allowing the tyre with better grip to move the vehicle. In addition, the system reduces engine output to minimise wheelspin.

By monitoring input from a series of vehicle sensors, VSA calculates a predicted range of vehicle response while constantly monitoring the vehicle's actual response and the driver's control inputs. If the actual response is outside the predicted response range, as when cornering forces exceed the tyres' performance, VSA automatically intervenes with corrective action.

In the case of oversteer (which may lead to a spin), VSA applies braking to the outside wheel to counter the yawing tendency. On the other hand, if understeer is detected, VSA applies braking to the inside wheel and reduces engine power to turn the car back on to the intended course.

An indicator light flashes on the instrument panel while the system is actively enhancing the stability of the vehicle. A cockpit switch to the side of the instrument panel is provided to disable the VSA.

More communicative steering

Jazz continues to use electric power steering, but in the latest model the system has been completely revised and feedback and stability have been considerably enhanced for a more direct steering feel and a more enjoyable driving experience.

Both the rigidity of the steering gearbox and its installation have been increased and together with a motor capacity increased from 40 to 60 A and the revised suspension geometry described above, the result is a light steering feel at low speeds and good stability at high speeds with improved on centre feel.

Uprated brakes

The braking system comprises ventilated discs at the front and discs at the rear and all Jazz models are equipped with an ABS system with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist functionality as standard equipment. Greater stopping power comes courtesy of larger front brake callipers, while brake pedal feel has been optimised and now requires less driver effort to achieve the same effect.

1.2 S and LS, and 1.4 LS models are equipped with 15 inch steel wheels fitted with twin 5-spoke trims and shod with 175/65 R15 tyres. Jazz 1.4 ES gains 5-spoke alloy wheels of the same size, while the 1.4 EX model has a choice of 15 inch or 16 inch twin 5-spoke alloys .

The NEW KIA Forte

KIA Motors Corp. announced the first English official press release on August 21, 2008, when Forte revealed to the citizens of South Korea. In addition to the official text that provides some interesting info about the all-new KIA Forte.

Press release :
Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's No. 2 carmaker, unveiled its new Forte compact sedan Thursday, hoping that the fuel-efficient car will help boost sales amid higher fuel prices.

The new model, which goes on sale next week, is the latest entrant to the country's 1.6-liter vehicle segment and marks the automaker's newest model after another 1.6-liter version of Cerato was released in November, 2003.

The Forte, equipped with a gasoline or diesel engine, will compete with the Avante by Hyundai Motor Co. the SM3 by Renault Samsung Motors Co. and the Lacetti by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co.

The new Kia model generates 124 horsepower, and the company plans to add a 2-liter engine later. The price for the Forte ranges from 11.9 million won (US$11,300) to 19.6 million won, depending on accessories and engine types, it said.

The automaker, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Co., said it aims to sell 50,000 units domestically and 170,000 units overseas next year. For this year, Kia Motors targets the sale of 30,000 units. Annual sales for the model will rise to 250,000 annually from 2010, it said.

Kia Motors revamped its lineup to boost sales by redesigning its minicar Morning, mid-sized sedan Lotze and new Mohave sport-utility vehicle. It also plans to add a small crossover vehicle, known as Soul, later this year.

Kia Motors last month raised its domestic sales target to 364,000 units this year from 327,000, fueled by strong sales of its Morning mini-car.

VW powers up Mexico plant

Posted by : Thai Automaxx | | | 0 Comments »

MEXICO CITY -- Volkswagen AG will increase production capacity at its assembly complex in Puebla, Mexico, to 550,000 vehicles a year from 450,000 as the plant prepares to build a new compact sedan for world markets, the company's CEO in Mexico says.

In an interview here last week, Otto Lindner told Automotive News that production of the compact will start in 2010.

"We can't say what it will be, but it will be a world car, with the exception of China," he said.

New output record

The plant, 75 miles southeast of Mexico City, is operating at maximum capacity. Lindner said 450,000 passenger cars will be assembled there this year, which would be a plant record. The previous record of 425,700 was set in 2000.

"The plan is to increase installed production capacity to 550,000 vehicles a year. We will reach this probably in 2011," said Lindner, 59. Before moving to Mexico four years ago, he directed the Audi assembly plant in Ingolstadt, Germany.

This year, he said, Puebla will assemble 210,000 Jettas, known in Mexico as Boras; 110,000 SportWagens, also known as Golf Variants; 80,000 former-generation Jettas; 34,000 New Beetle sedans; and 16,000 New Beetle Cabriolets.

In the first half of 2008, 84 percent of the vehicles assembled at the plant were exported, a trend likely to continue. The United States and Canada were major markets but not the only export destinations. Just over 40 percent of total production, primarily SportWagens, will be shipped to Europe this year, Lindner said.

The production program for the new compact sedan will account for most of the $1 billion investment in Puebla that VW CEO Martin Winterkorn announced during a visit to the plant in February, Lindner said.

"About 70 percent of the investment will be VW's, and 30 percent will come from the supplier network," he said.

VW is building a 65,000-square-foot stamping shop, a 265,000-square-foot body shop and an 85,000-square-foot logistics shop on the northern edge of the Puebla complex.

The automaker also is extending the 117,000-square-foot paint shop by 70,000 square feet and adding 104,000 square feet to the 301,000-square-foot assembly shop.

60% Mexican parts

Lindner said 60 percent of the parts used at Puebla are provided by suppliers based in Mexico. The new goal is to have 90 percent of the parts come from Mexico, Canada and the United States, starting in 2010, he said.

"This is also the reason we installed a new purchasing board member in Mexico who is responsible for all purchasing activities in North America," Lindner said, referring to Rudiger Koch.

The pressure to source more parts from North America is great, Lindner said. A local content of 60 percent "is too low," he said, adding that "European parts are very expensive now" because of an unfavorable dollar-euro exchange rate.

"So the activity of localizing parts is very important," Lindner said. "To be independent of these exchange rates, we have to localize more."

Lindner said the Puebla plant has 240 suppliers based in Mexico, 60 total in the United States and Canada, 60 in Europe, 10 in Asia and 30 in Brazil.

"We would like to move a lot of this to the dollar region," he said.

Lindner said one of the major benefits to the Puebla plant of VW's planned new assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., will be a "better supplier network." Chattanooga is scheduled to launch production in 2011.

Renault Twingo RS

PARIS - August 25, 2008: With cars like the R8 Gordini, 5 GT Turbo and Clio Williams, the Renault range has always featured affordable sporty cars based on mainstream production models. Twingo Renault Sport is latest car to enjoy that distinction.

Twingo Renault Sport is the result of a double challenge which sought to deliver a car with genuine sporty credentials at an affordable price. It is a Renault Sport car through and through, and features the same ingredients that have helped forged the success of its larger siblings, Clio and Mégane Renault Sport. These include specific styling, coupled with a chassis, engine and braking system engineered for a high standard of efficiency and performance that is also suited to everyday use.

Twingo Renault Sport's release stems from a desire to facilitate access to the Renault Sport experience. Twingo Renault Sport's compact proportions and sharp styling echo the Twingo Concept show car which was a star of the 2006 Paris Motor Show. The newcomer's pedigree and sporty looks are highlighted by its bumpers, wider front and rear wings, sculpted side skirts and an aerodynamic spoiler. Inside, the cabin has been tailored for focused sports driving, with Renault Sport front seats for enhanced lateral support, plus specific aluminium pedals, a leather steering wheel and revcounter. From launch, it will be possible to customise the car to owners' individual tastes thanks to a range of exterior and interior Renault Sport detailing accessories, as well as a multimedia connection point.

As suggested by its fully disconnectable ESP, which comes as standard, Twingo Renault Sport delivers genuine sports enjoyment but is also suited to everyday use. Its finely balanced handling ensures that it is easy to assimilate and fun to drive, while ensuring a particularly high standard of safety. As is the case with Clio and Mégane Renault Sport, two types of chassis ('Sport' and 'Cup') are available. Both benefit from wider front and rear tracks, while the main components of its powerful, durable braking system are sourced from higher segment models. Twingo Renault Sport is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine developed by Renault Sport Technologies. This powerplant pumps out 133hp (98kW) at 6,750rpm, with 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The unit's punchy character is reinforced by a characteristic engine note which has been the focus of specific development. The four-into-one exhaust is a technological feat which strikes a perfect balance between acoustics, performance and low emissions.

Twingo Renault Sport has plenty in its favour to win over a new, young clientele. To support these customers buying their first hot hatch, Renault Sport is offering a Renault Sport Experience driving tuition course in certain countries. This service is unprecedented in the small car segment and offers instruction on safe driving techniques. MOTOR SPORT IN ITS GENES

Renault has always been a major player in the world of motor sport and its record reveals a long list of successes in many legendary races and competitions. From the R8 Gordini and Clio Williams to the 5 GT Turbo, the Renault range has always featured sports versions of mainstream production models. The latest car to enjoy this distinction is Twingo Renault Sport.

Renault's motor sport heritage...
Ever since its creation in 1898, Renault has been a major player in the world of motor sport. It won the Paris-Madrid road race as early as 1903, has notched up many memorable successes in rallying and endurance racing (1978 Le Mans 24 Hours) and has held several land speed records. It has also marked history with such bold innovations as the introduction of Formula 1's first turbocharged engine in 1977. Three decades on, Renault secured back-to-back FIA Formula 1 Constructors' titles in 2005 and 2006. This commitment, which is anchored in Renault's DNA, is not simply founded on pumping up power outputs. "We have the privilege of addressing a demanding, connoisseur clientele, and many of our competitors compete actively," points out Rémi Deconinck, the General Manager of Renault Sport Technologies. Buyers of Renault Sport vehicles are genuine specialists and are looking for a car that mirrors their personality. These exceptional cars are derived from the Clio, Mégane and now Twingo ranges, but have been through the expert hands of Renault Sport specialists who are accustomed to exacting world of competition.

In Europe, the Renault Sport brand benefits directly from the reputation of the World Series by Renault which has attracted almost two million spectators since its creation in 2005. Renault is the only carmaker to run a motor sport programme of this sort. Conviviality has played a key part in the success of the World Series by Renault which makes a point of providing entertainment for all the family. A special welcome is also reserved for customers who attend World Series by Renault meetings with their personal Renault sports model or classic car. "In emerging countries where Formula 1 serves as a locomotive for our brand's image and reputation," continues Rémi Deconinck, "the aim of Renault Sport Technologies is to showcase the tie that exists between motor sport and the brand's ability to propose high performance motor cars." Renault Sport Technologies also has a role to play in Renault's international growth thanks notably to its experience as the world's biggest organiser of motor races.

...combined with Twingo's own DNA
Twingo Renault Sport is the result the double challenge that consisted in delivering sports performance and equipment at an affordable price. It is a genuine Renault Sport model which features the same ingredients that have forged the success of its larger siblings, Clio and Mégane Renault Sport, namely specific looks and a chassis/engine package that has been engineered for performance and efficiency. Twingo Renault Sport forms part of Renault's bid to make the Renault Sport range accessible to an even broader public. It also marks an extension of the Twingo range with a view to meeting the demands of all its customers.

TWINGO RENAULT SPORT, SPORTY LOOKS DESIGNED FOR PERFORMANCE

Compact proportions and sharp styling echo the Twingo Concept show car which was a star of the 2006 Paris Motor Show. Twingo's distinctive looks have been made even more athletic thanks to the newcomer's specific bumpers, wider front and rear wings, sculpted side skirts and aerodynamic spoiler which all point to the car's sporting pedigree. Inside, the cabin has been tailored for focused sports driving, with a number of details that are unique to this model: Renault Sport seats for enhanced lateral support, aluminium pedals, a leather steering wheel and a specific rev counter. A customisation programme is also available, allowing buyers to adapt their new car to their personal taste and needs. Exterior and interior Renault Sport detailing is available, along with a multimedia connection point.

Power and poise
Twingo Renault Sport's compact proportions and sharp styling embody its fun-to-drive, sporty nature, and are reminiscent of the Twingo Concept show car. Additional cooling for the 133hp naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine is provided by a wide Renault Sport airintake grille in the front bumper. The sculpted side sills, coupled with wider front and rear wings, underline Twingo Renault Sport's assertive pedigree and character. At the rear, the chromed exhaust tail pipe emerges through a two-tone bumper. The foglamp surrounds, exterior mirror housings, 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels and aerodynamic spoiler all sport the same shade of anthracite grey. Renault Sport badging can be added to the flanks or rear bumper. Like the chequered flag graphics, these designs conjure up the dynamic world of motor sport. Twingo Renault Sport is fitted with generously-proportioned tyres (195/45 R16 or 195/40 R17) mounted on aluminium alloy wheels. They house substantial brake discs and callipers which provide powerful, durable braking performance. Twingo Renault Sport also introduces a new colour to the Renault Sport range, with the new Altica Grey once again echoing Twingo Concept. Three other metallic shades are available (Nacré Black; Extrme Blue and Platine Grey), in addition to the non-metallic Vif Red.

Sports styling inside
The ergonomic driving position conjures up the world of racing with features that are centred firmly on the driver: aluminium pedals, and a four-spoke perforated leather steering wheel with dark charcoal stitching. For added comfort, it gives the driver's hands perfect grip in the 'ten-to-two' position. The rev-counter is located directly behind the steeringwheel, echoing racing car design: employing a specific typeface, the numbers grow in size as the needle approaches the red line at 7,000rpm. Just like in the cockpit of the ING Renault F1 Team's R28 Formula 1 car, the rev-counter features a gear change alert to warn the driver as the engine approaches maximum revs. The dark charcoal interior trim neatly expresses sporting performance. Offering additional lateral support and outstanding comfort, the specific Renault Sport seats allow the driver to feel at one with the car. The colour of the Blood Orange safety belts matches the contrasting stitching of the upholstery. As with all cars developed by Renault Sport Technologies, the Renault Sport logo can be found inside the cabin, on the rev-counter, door sills and front seats. Outside, the badge features on the rear hatch and engine air filter.

A hot hatch for everybody's taste From launch, Twingo Renault Sport will be available with a wide range of options to cover the different tastes of every customer. Renault Sport graphics can be applied to the sides, rear bumper and can even be carried over to the ignition key housing. Several graphics are available, namely 'Grey Shadows', 'Chess' and 'Renault Sport Chequers'. Like the rest of the Twingo range, the newcomer places significant emphasis on communications technologies and is available with hands-free Bluetooth telephone controls, a portable Carminat navigation system and an audio connection box which permits personal MP3 or iPod players to connected in total safety.

COMBINING SPORTS PERFORMANCE WITH EVERYDAY USE

Twingo Renault Sport is the response of Renault Sport Technologies' experts to the double challenge of delivering sports performance and equipment that is suitable for everyday use. The fully disconnectable ESP, which comes as standard, forms part of this brief. Twingo Renault Sport's balanced sports handling ensures that the new car is easy and fun to drive, in addition to combining performance with a high standard of safety. The two Renault Sport chassis (Sport and Cup) benefit from wider front and rear tracks, while the powerful, durable braking system is sourced from higher segment models. In day to day use, passengers will appreciate the roomy, modular cabin and generous boot space that are hallmarks of Twingo, the A-segment benchmark in these domains. Twingo Renault Sport is also available with independent sliding rear seats.

Pleasure and safety in day to day use
Twingo Renault Sport delivers genuine driving enjoyment in total safety. Its responsive, nicely balanced chassis benefits from the existing, excellent suspension and running gear already seen on New Twingo and Clio II Renault Sport. Its set-up offers precise sports handling and ESP is standard to enable the driver to stay in control in situations where grip is lost. This disconnectable function and the absence of emergency brake assist underpin Twingo Renault Sport's sporty credentials, while its electric power steering has been calibrated to ensure precise, instantaneous response to the driver's instructions via the steering wheel.

A composed, balanced platform
Like Clio and Mégane Renault Sport, the newcomer offers two chassis options: 'Sport' and 'Cup'. In both cases, track has been widened by 60mm at the front and by 59mm at the rear compared with Twingo GT. These modifications improve stability and lateral grip. The front suspension is a pseudo-MacPherson type arrangement, with aluminium lower arms. The adoption of pushrods on the dampers improves the performance of the anti-roll bar for even better body control. Twingo Renault Sport's rear suspension is based on an H-type programmed deflection rear beam. To improve ride and comfort, the dampers are mounted vertically and coupled with variable rate coil springs. The 24mm diameter rear anti-roll bar (compared with 22.5mm on Twingo GT) brings a stiffness gain of 25%. The anti-roll front/rear performance split has been calibrated to improve rear-end agility for extra enjoyment and also enhance the overall sports performance of the chassis.

Sport chassis: nimble and responsive
The Sport chassis has been engineered for the best and safest balance between driving enjoyment and performance. Compared with Twingo GT, it features a lower centre of gravity thanks to a 10mm lower ride-height. Stiffer springs (plus 30 per cent compared with Twingo GT) and uprated dampers (also plus 30 per cent) contribute to the car's sporty handling, while firmer bushing has enhanced directional precision front and rear. The Twingo Renault Sport 'Sport' chassis is also fitted with generously-proportioned tyres (195/45 R16).

The performance-focused Cup chassis
Twingo Renault Sport is also available with a Cup chassis for incisive handling and maximum driving enjoyment. In this configuration, Twingo Renault Sport offers handling to satisfy the demands of any enthusiast. This chassis offers optimum body control and its natural home is on the track, where flat cornering and improved corner speed demonstrate its effectiveness. The Cup chassis rides another 4mm lower than the standard setting, and its lower centre of gravity improves in-corner performance thanks to reduced weight transfer. Tuned damper settings and higher spring rates (10 per cent stiffer front and rear) bring greater performance through better body control. The Cup chassis-based Twingo Renault Sport stands out by its Dark Metal Grey 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels equipped with 195/40 R17 tyres engineered for efficiency.

Powerful, durable stopping power
Twingo Renault Sport benefits from Renault Sport's braking expertise to deliver powerful, durable stopping power combined with a reassuringly progressive brake pedal feel. Twingo Renault Sport is equipped with the same discs as Mégane II (280mm diameter vented fronts, plus 240mm diameter rears), New Laguna-sourced front callipers (57mm), and Mégane II rear callipers (34mm).

Segment leading cabin space and flexibility
In day to day use, passengers will appreciate the roomy, modular interior and spacious boot, all hallmarks of Twingo which stands out as the A-segment benchmark in these domains. Depending on market (and/or chassis type), two types of rear seats are available: - a removable, folding rear bench seat, - independent, sliding rear seats for customers who prefer a practical, modular interior. As is the case for Twingo, this new hot hatch offers a smart system that comprises two independent, sliding rear seats featuring fore-aft travel of 220mm. The different options made possible by the modular interior enable boot volume to extend from 165dm3 VDA (with the rear seats in their rearmost position; a layout which favours rear passenger comfort), to 285dm3 VDA (rear seats in their foremost position to favour boot space), and even 959dm3 VDA with the independent seats folded and tipped forward. Twingo Renault Sport consequently boasts the biggest boot volume for a vehicle of its size. The same seats offer rear legroom of up to 230mm, which is equivalent to that of models from the next segment up.

A PUNCHY, FLEXIBLE ENGINE

Twingo Renault Sport is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine developed by Renault Sport Technologies. This powerplant pumps out 133hp (98kW) at 6,750rpm with 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The unit's punchy character is reinforced by a characteristic engine note which has been the focus of specific development. The four-into-one exhaust is a technological feat, striking a perfect balance between acoustics, performance and low emissions.

A sporty, normally-aspirated engine
Twingo Renault Sport is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre 16V engine (K4M RS) which delivers 133hp (98kW) at 6,750rpm and 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. This freerevving engine offers flexible performance and instantaneous throttle response. At low revs and in the mid-range up to 4,500 rpm, Twingo Renault Sport offers lively yet manageable performance for everyday use. Beyond 4,500rpm, Twingo Renault Sport gives full vent to its sporting character with true punchy performance. The car accelerates from standstill to 100kph in 8.7 seconds, while top speed is 201kph with the rev-limiter at 7,000rpm. Fuel consumption is a low 7 litres/100km, equivalent to CO2 emissions of 165g/km. The 133hp 1.6 litre 16V powerplant has been developed from the 1,598cc petrol engine. The improved power and torque are the result of modifications and improvements to the mechanical components: The air filling rate has been improved thanks to a specific throttle valve unit and aluminium plenum chamber, plus revised diameters and lengths for the air-inlets. To improve air intake and facilitate gas flow, research was carried out on the aerodynamics of the valve seats. The calibration of the camshafts was revised to a longer opening of the valves and higher lift (11mm compared to an average of 9mm). The design of the combustion chamber and piston produces a high compression ratio of 11.0:1, leading to enhanced combustion and efficiency, as well as less emissions. The continuously-variable inlet camshaft improves performance right across the rev range. The actuator varies the timing setting to optimise valve opening and closing. This system operates continuously through 44° of crankshaft rotation.

Sports performance and acoustic enjoyment
The experts at Renault Sport Technologies have worked hard to give Twingo Renault Sport an engine note in keeping with its sporting character. The engine noise is minimal at low revs, but builds mid-way through the rev range to become `fiery' when pushed to its limits. The four-into-one exhaust manifold, made from thin-walled steel, forms the object of a patent by Renault Sport Technologies. The technological feat is to have combined four long steel tubes in such a restricted space. This architecture offers an excellent trade-off between acoustics, performance and emissions. Indeed, the engine has been designed to be able to comply with Euro5 legislation. Twingo Renault Sport is fitted with an evolution version of the five-speed manual gearbox (JR5). The closely-spaced ratios are linked to a fast and precise shift mechanism to favour crisp acceleration in all gears.

F1 : Massa wins in Valencia

Felipe Massa kisses the champion trophy of European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain

Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton each had their own reasons to feel relieved on Sunday after finishing first and second in a processional European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain.

Massa's win on the streets of Valencia wiped away the Ferrari driver's disappointment at retiring from the Hungarian Grand Prix three weeks earlier with a blown engine while leading with three laps remaining.

The Brazilian, who drove from pole position to chequered flag in masterful fashion, climbed the podium with the race outcome still uncertain pending a stewards' enquiry.

In the end he escaped with a EUR10,000 fine, with stewards deciding that while his release from his second pitstop had been unsafe there was no sporting advantage gained.

McLaren's Hamilton, now six points clear of Massa in the drivers' standings, was happy to have limited the damage after 'flu symptoms and a painful neck had made the 23-year-old Briton's participation doubtful.

The win catapulted Massa back to second place in the championship, ahead of team mate and world champion Kimi Raikkonen who retired in the closing stages with another spectacular engine failure.

Hamilton now leads with 70 points to Massa's 64 and Raikkonen's 57.

"I am so glad, and so happy, to be able to be here like this after such a bad result in Hungary," said Massa, who finished 5.6 seconds ahead of Hamilton for his fourth win of the season.

"The car was great, especially in the second stint, and the team were great, too. To take pole position, to win the race and to have the fastest lap - you cannot ask for more after such a result in Budapest."

Ferrari stayed top of the constructors' standings with 121 points to McLaren's 113 and BMW Sauber's 96.

Hamilton suffers

Hamilton, who has also won four races, was relieved to have put a "miserable weekend" behind him.

"I have had flu symptoms and a fever nearly every day. I had low energy and I had problems with spasms in my neck," he said. "This led to me almost not racing this weekend.

"Pedro (de la Rosa, the team's test and reserve driver) was on standby. But I managed to get through it even though it was tough."

Poland's Robert Kubica took third place for BMW Sauber despite a steering imbalance caused by a plastic bag blowing across the track and becoming wedged underneath his car during the early laps.

"I felt like I couldn't drive it, I lost the steering a lot for two corners before it came back and I lost some confidence in the car," he said. "So I am glad to be third, it is a good result for the team."

Raikkonen, without a win since the Spanish Grand Prix in April, bungled his second pitstop and injured a mechanic when he set off before the fuel nozzle had been removed. That incident was also the subject of a stewards' inquiry.

The Ferrari pitstops aside, the first grand prix staged in Valencia proved a straightforward contest with the top three finishing as they started.

Raikkonen's retirement, with black smoke billowing across the pit straight 12 laps from the finish, again highlighted the fragility of Ferrari's reliability with six races remaining.

"It is an issue for us because we have had some problems in the first race, in the last one and in this one," said Massa.

McLaren had little to worry in that respect, with Hungarian GP winner Heikki Kovalainen finishing fourth ahead of Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Germany's Sebastian Vettel for Toro Rosso.

Germany's Timo Glock was seventh for Toyota while compatriot Nico Rosberg took the final point for Williams.

Fernando Alonso suffered the biggest disappointment, with Spain's double world champion forced to retire after the opening lap when his Renault was hit by Kazuki Nakajima's Williams.

"I wanted to carry on for the fans, but the damage was too bad," he said.

SUPER GT Round 6, POKKA 1,000 km.@SUZUKA Circuit - Race Report
No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R

SUZUKA Circuit : August 24, 2008 - The 37th International Pokka 1000Km Race, Round 6 of the 2008 AUTOBACS SUPER GT, was held at the Suzuka Circuit (one lap 5.807 km ?173 laps) in Mie Prefecture and the GT500 class winner was the CALSONIC GT-R driven by Tsugio Matsuda and Sebastien Philippe

In contrast to the intense summer heat of year's past, this year's 1000 km was under cloudy skies with rather cool temperatures. But that didn't prevent a series of upsets from the start with several machines being plagued with trouble.

The CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R had only managed a 5th in the Saturday qualifying and had suffered from machine trouble in the early stages of the race as well, but the team's ace driver, Tsugio Matsuda, battled back valiantly. By the half-way point at 500 km his team was in second position. After a quick final pit stop on the 138th lap, they finally passed the leading NSX to take over at the front. Teammate Sebastien Philippe widened the gap on the chasing NSX and ran the final laps of the 1000 km unchallenged to the checkered in the darkening dusk.

For the IMPUL team led by the former driving great, Kazuyoshi Hoshino, this was their second win at the Pokka 1000Km race, following a victory in 2006. For the Nissan GT-R this is the second victory here at Suzuka this year, following the win at the opening round. For Matsuda it was his first victory at the Pokka 1000Km and for Philippe it was his third.

In the GT300 class the victory went to the MOLA LEOPALACE Z driven by Kazuki Hoshino and Hironobu Yasuda. Hoshino is the eldest son of the manager of the winning GT500 team, Kazuyoshi Hoshino, making this a two-class family victory.

Winner Comments

No.12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R [GT500]
Tsugio Matsuda: “Both myself and the team thought that we had a good chance to win this race. In the early running we had to make a pit stop because of a loosening wheel nut, but since we were running on a 4-pit-stop strategy I kept driving for 62 laps. That was tough (laughs). But it was important that I was able to do that. Also, when I was battling with No. 100 we had plenty of fuel and were able to make our pit stop one lap later than theirs. That is a big part of the reason why we won. This is a victory won by the drivers, the team and everyone together. I hope that now we will be able to compete for the title in the last race of the season."

Sebastien Philippe: “I am really happy with today's race. When we were having problems in the early going, I never thought that we would be able to win, but Tsugio ran a perfect race. By the time I started my last leg I was confident that we could win. I have been on the winning team three times here at the Pokka 1000Km, but since it has become a SUPER GT there are a lot of strong rivals and it is much harder to win now than it was before. What's why I'm especially happy with today's win."

No.46 MOLA LEOPALACE Z [GT300]
Kazuki Hoshin: “Before the race there was the strategic possibility of intentionally not going for a top place this time because the handicap weights we would have to carry for the next race, but as long as we are going to compete I thought we should try to win. During the race I told the team over the radio that I had a strategy to win. The team responded and we were able to win. On every lap I could see the Nissan flags that the fans were waving and that encouraged me a lot."

Hironobu Yasuda: “Thank you, everyone. Last year we got a podium finish here driving the No. 23 car but I wasn't able to drive in the final. I am very glad that this year I was able to be one of the drivers on the winning team. I think that this win has given us good momentum toward the season title. So, I am going to do my best to help bring us the title win."

Chrysler starts production of 2 hybrid SUVs

Posted by : Thai Automaxx | | | 0 Comments »

AUBURN HILLS, Mich.: August 22, 2008 - Chrysler LLC’s Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) began rolling off the assembly line this week at its Newark (Delaware) Assembly Plant. Chrysler is offering the two-mode hybrid powertrain on both vehicles built at the plant, Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen.

The hybrid system called for new assembly processes to install a 300-volt battery and other components that Chrysler is using for the first time.

"The implementation of this new manufacturing process was done intelligently, with both quality and cost in mind," Joe Ozdowy, Newark's plant manager, said in a statement.

The Two Mode hybrid drivetrain features a 385-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 equipped with a cylinder cutoff system. The engine is combined with a four-speed automatic transmission that has two internal electric motors. The Two Mode was developed by a partnership involving General Motors, Daimler AG and BMW AG.

The Two Mode powertrain propels the vehicle on electric power at speeds up to about 25 mph. It also can provide an extra boost of passing power on the highway when needed.

Chrysler has estimated that the hybrid system improves overall fuel economy 25 percent, to about 20 mpg city.

The Durango hybrid is priced at $45,340 and the Aspen at $45,570; both prices include shipping. Chrysler says buyers are expected to get a $1,800 tax credit.

Chrysler's Durango and Aspen hybrids enter an SUV market that has been slammed by a consumer shift to smaller cars.

Durango sales were down 84.5 percent in July, to 384 units. In the first seven months of the year, sales are down 51.3 percent to 15,293.

The Aspen has fared better than the Durango, but it was a new model in 2007. Through July, sales are down 3.7 percent to 14,446 units.

2008 Renault Sandero Stepway

PARIS : August 23, 2008 - Renault is enriching its vehicle line-up in Mercosur with Renault Sandero Stepway, launched from October in Brazil and then in Argentina. The newcomer’s assertive styling is targeted at sophisticated urban customers looking for a vehicle that sets them apart.

Renault Sandero Stepway boasts the same fundamental qualities of roominess and reliability as Renault Sandero, this last quality underscored by a three-year/100,000-km warranty in Brazil. Manufactured at the Curitiba plant, Renault Sandero Stepway is the fifth of six models to be launched in Brazil as part of Renault Commitment 2009. Renault doubled its sales in Brazil between 2007 and 2008 with this strong product offensive. The brand now ranks among the top five best-selling manufacturers in the country.

2008 Renault Sandero Stepway

An all-new vehicle in the Renault Mercosur range

Renault programmed an Urban Sport variant of Renault Sandero right from the start of the design phase. Developed primarily for the needs of the Brazilian market, Renault Sandero Stepway targets sophisticated urban customers looking for a vehicle with assertive and distinctive styling. The forceful personality of Renault Sandero Stepway is reflected in raised ground clearance, roof bars with an integrated spoiler, exclusive bumpers and grille, and a chrome-finished exhaust pipe.

The high-set driver’s position makes for a stress-free urban drive, while driving pleasure is fully delivered by the only engine available on Sandero Stepway : the 112 hp 1.6 16V Hi-Flex, Renault’s most powerful bio-ethanol powerplant in Brazil. While Renault Sandero Stepway is a natural in the “urban jungle”, it also features all the fundamental qualities of Sandero, such as roominess and robustness.

Renault Sandero Stepway has an immense cabin for the segment, seating five adults in complete comfort and boasting a 320-litre trunk. Build quality and robustness are underlined by a three-year/100,000-km warranty in Brazil. Renault Sandero Stepway is also set for launch in Argentina with a dCi engine.

Outstanding sales success for Renault do Brasil

Built at the Curitiba plant, Renault Sandero Stepway is the fifth of six models to be launched in Brazil under Renault Commitment 2009. Renault is investing one billion reals (400 million euros) in Brazil as part of the plan. Driven by the product offensive kicked off in 2006 with Mégane Sedan and Mégane Grand Tour and continued by Logan in 2007 and Sandero in 2008, Renault do Brasil’s sales attained record levels in first-half 2008. It sold a total 58,800 units – twice as many as in first-half 2007.

This 92.4% increase took Renault’s market share in Brazil from 3% to 4.4% in one year, placing the brand among the top five best-selling carmakers in the country. With sales of nearly 18,500 vehicles in first-half 2008, Renault Sandero has made a significant contribution to this success.

Barina Hatch gets a Stylish Makeover with refreshing new look inside and out for 3-door & 5-door hatch

The new 5 - door Holden Barina

SYDNEY - GM Holden continues its competitive push into the value end of the light car market with a fresh new look and feel for the Barina 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks, plus the addition of side impact airbags across the range.

Starting from $14,490*, the upgraded Holden Barina hatchbacks represent exceptional value for money, boasting a 1.6 litre powertrain and refreshed exterior and interior styling.

Most notably, the Barina 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks have been given a more dynamic body design, highlighted by a strong Euro-styled front fascia and rear end treatments.

Inside, the interior is significantly upgraded and features an updated instrument panel, console and new fabric trim.

From a safety perspective, all Barina models including the the 4-door Barina sedan receive driver, front passenger and side impact airbags as standard.

GM Holden Director of Marketing, Philip Brook said the latest Barina range offered customers choice, style and function at a great value price.

"With three body styles, striking exterior and interior design improvements, Barina will appeal to a broad range of customer groups. Add side impact airbags and the package becomes even more attractive," Brook said.

"Barina represents great value for money in a growing segment of the market that appreciates fuel economy and the convenience of a small vehicle."

Barina 3-door and 5-door hatchback's updated design is reflected in the strong signature radiator grille flanked by large curved and jewelled headlamps.

Dynamic detailing includes sporty contours which flow from the bonnet to the A-pillar with prominent shoulder lines, rear roof spoiler and a rear bumper fascia surmounted by clear round tail lamps.

The Barina hatch models also get a cleverly packaged interior characterised by the new instrument panel which features a matt chrome-trimmed four-circle instrument cluster.

Air vents on the new centre console repeat the circular theme and the fully integrated audio unit is MP3 compatible. Heating and air-conditioning controls are large and user-friendly.

The Barina range improves occupant safety with the inclusion of side impact airbags for driver and front passenger, which extend upwards to provide head as well as thorax protection and complement the driver and front passenger airbags already standard.

Barina is powered by a 1.6 litre DOHC multi-point fuel injected engine that produces 76kW of peak power at 5800rpm and develops peak torque of 145Nm at 3600rpm#.

The 16-valve 1.6 litre powerplant returns 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (manual transmission) and 7.6 litres/100 kilometres (automatic).

The new Volkswagen Golf VI
  • Significantly better delivery trend than for global market
  • Record in China: Over 607,500 vehicles delivered (+19.3 percent)
WOLFSBURG : August 22, 2008 -vehicles worldwide (+5.0 percent) from January to July 2008, more than ever before for the first seven months of a year. In July 2008, the Group delivered 521,500 vehicles worldwide, on a par with the prior-year level despite an automotive market that remained slow. The Group thus performed well against the noticeably poorer delivery trend on the global market (January to July: 0.4 percent; July: -4.2 percent) for both the period January to July and for the month of July.

"These record deliveries and growing market shares have been made possible by our growth strategy, particularly in the BRIC markets, and our model diversity, even though the general situation on global automotive markets continues to deteriorate," Detlef Wittig, Executive Vice President Group Sales and Marketing, commented.

In China, the Group set a new record for the first seven months in a year, delivering 607,500 vehicles (+19.3 percent) during this period. The Group also achieved further strong growth in Brazil from January to July with 378,300 vehicles delivered (+22.2 percent) and in Central and Eastern Europe (+19.6 percent to 333,100 vehicles). There were even higher percentage increases in Group deliveries from January to July 2008 to customers in India (+69.5 percent to 12,000), Russia (+67.0 percent to 71,400) and Ukraine (+50.1 percent to 31,300 vehicles).

The Group delivered 2.18 million vehicles (+0.7 percent) in Europe during the first seven months of this year, of which 624,000 (+2.8 percent) were delivered in Germany. In Western Europe (excluding Germany), where the market continued to show a noticeable general weakness, the Group delivered 1.22 million vehicles (-4.5 percent).
