Mercedes-Benz Opens New Advanced Design Studio In California

May 31, 2008 0 comments

Stuttgart, Geramany – Mercedes-Benz is moving its Southern Californian advanced design studio from Irvine to a newly-acquired, spacious facility near Carlsbad, in order to strengthen its creative base in the U.S. At the new Carlsbad facility, the styling masterminds pondering the car of the future have almost three times more space in which to realize their creative ideas. Thus, Mercedes-Benz is underscoring the continually growing influence of the advanced design studio on the internationally-oriented design strategy of the world’s oldest vehicle manufacturer.

The new studio in Carlsbad is one of a group of international advanced design studios that, as a globally-oriented vehicle maker, Mercedes-Benz runs in places such as Como, Tokyo and Sindelfingen, as well as in the U.S.The studios are creative islands that are not subject to the demands of series production, but instead allow designers to take influences from their environments, to evaluate them and to interpret them freely. Their inspirations provide important momentum to the development of Mercedes-Benz design, which is not oriented only towards the domestic market, but also takes on board strange, new ideas from other continents and cultures that fit to the Mercedes-Benz brand identity.

As part of its internationally-oriented design strategy, Mercedes-Benz opened its first advanced design studio in the U.S.back in 1990 in Irvine, California. Since then the importance of the Californian facility has grown to such an extent that the 1200 square metres of rented space on Cowan Street in Irvine are no longer sufficient. Therefore, Mercedes-Benz decided to acquire the new building in Carlsbad, 80 miles south of Los Angeles. With 3160 square meters, it even has enough space for the construction of 1:1 models – something that wasn’t previously possible. The move to the new creative centre on Rutherford Road will begin in July 2008.

“The substantial enlargement of our design studio in California bears testament to the growing importance of design at Mercedes-Benz,” says Gorden Wagener, Head of Strategic Advanced Design and future Head of Design for Mercedes-Benz Cars. “With our studios in California, Tokyo and Como, we have established a creative basis for important markets. They function as our seismograph for influences emerging from art, culture and architecture.”

More than 10 000 kilometres from the design centre in Sindelfingen, Carlsbad will offer around 25 employees from a diverse mix of cultural backgrounds an ideal creative working environment for the development of the Mercedes-Benz design language of the day after tomorrow. On the one hand, it will display as many modern international influences as necessary while, on the other, conveying a clear image of its roots. Because a Mercedes will always be a Mercedes.

Ford expands Fiesta lineup for North America

2009 Ford Fiesta

Ford Motor Co. has added a hatchback version of the Fiesta to the 2010 North American launch of the small economy car. The hatchback will be sold alongside the sedan.

Ford confirmed today that it will build the Fiesta line at its Cuautitlan, Mexico, plant starting in early 2010 as part of $3 billion investment in the country.

The Fiesta will give Ford two strong highly fuel efficient competitors against such cars the Honda Fit and the Nissan Versa. The Fiesta nameplate is one of Ford's best known global small cars. It was last used on a North American vehicle in 1981.

It's not clear if the hatchback Fiesta will be the three-door, five-door or both. Ford officials in Dearborn would not confirm the number of doors Friday. However, a Ford official at the plant said both hatchbacks would be offered alongside the sedan in the United States.

"Ford is absolutely committed to leveraging our global assets to accelerate the shift to more fuel-efficient small cars and powertrain technologies that people really want and value," Ford CEO Alan Mulally said in a statement.

New vehicles part of $3 billion Mexican investment

Ford said the Cuautitlan plant will be transformed from making F-Series pickups for the Mexican market to small cars for all of North America.

The changes at the plant near Mexico City begin this year, as the plant is converted from its current production of F-Series pickups for the Mexican market to small cars for all of North America.

The automaker also said its Chihuahua Engine Plant, which builds I-4 engines, will make diesel engines for light- and medium-duty trucks in global markets. Ford further will build a transmission plant in Guanajuato as part of a joint venture with German supplier Getrag.

All told, Ford's plan will create 4,500 new jobs, the company said.

Ford added that after the changes are made, pickup trucks for the Mexican market will be imported from U.S. plants.

Ford said it expects its annual capacity in Mexico to increase to 500,000 vehicles and 330,000 transmissions by 2012. Ford's current capacity there is about 296,000 vehicles.

SEAT and Telefónica contribute towards improving road safety

May 30, 2008 0 comments

APPLYING INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN CARS :

Fewer road accidents, greater traffic efficiency and safer, more comfortable motoring are the objectives of the eCar Project jointly developed by the SEAT Technical Centre and Telefónica España through the application of Information and Communication Technologies in cars.

By using these technologies, cars can benefit from a wide range of services that help make motoring safer, more efficient and more comfortable. The increasing use of mobile communication in cars has led to the eCar Project, an innovative initiative for which the first services platform has been created for the so-called Connected Car.

The Connected Car is an Environmental Intelligence system (driver, vehicle and surroundings) that makes it possible to transfer more intelligence to the car for greater safety, mobility and entertainment services, and advanced communications within the vehicle.

Engineers at the Martorell Technical Centre have applied SEAT’s vision to the project, closely collaborating in aspects such as the Human Machine Interface and the use of the Connected Car services platform.

Two of the aspects developed for the driver that mainly enhance safety are an emergency dialling button and navigation functions using the GoogleMaps tool. On the other hand, passenger services centre on infotainment, such as information channels and multimedia content use and download.

Other communications services include calls, SMS messaging, Internet, etc, which can all be accessed on a touch screen or through voice activation.

More road safety and fewer accidents are SEAT’s main objectives, through the use of solutions so that both driver and passengers feel as safe and as comfortable as possible. Two of these are the eCar project in collaboration with Telefónica España or the creation of a rail connection between the Martorell factory and the Barcelona port, which eliminates the need for about 25,000 trucks yearly.

Japanese carmakers set to announce E85 plans.

Bangkok, Thailand -- Japanese automakers in Thailand including Toyota are considering clarifying their plans on E85-compatible vehicles to clear confusion among consumers. Unlike their European counterparts, including Ford and Volvo, no Japanese automaker has announced its plan to import or assemble E85-compatible cars for the Thai market.

The move is in response to the government's announcement that it would make E85 fuel, a mix of 15% gasoline and 85% crop-derived ethanol, available in the third quarter this year, three years ahead of the original schedule.

An auto industry source said the Japanese car firms were worried that consumers might delay their decisions and choose to wait for E85-compatible cars, thereby affecting their vehicle sales.

The government's decision has deeply frustrated the Japanese automakers who noted that the development of vehicles running on alternative fuels called for cautious steps and a long-term plan, otherwise it would take a long time to revive the effort.

Many car companies complained the government's early introduction this year of E20 fuel, one year ahead of schedule, had affected their operating plans.

''We cannot avoid E85 due to runaway fuel prices but a thorough study on E85 is also needed, be it crop supplies for making ethanol or environmental concerns about E85-capable vehicles,'' said the source.

In addition, the Japanese automakers already have their hands tied developing eco-cars, which are expected to be rolled out after 2009, making it difficult for them to develop them in parallel the E85-powered vehicles.

''E85-fuelled vehicles should be put on a long-term plan,'' said the source.

A detailed study on possible effects of E85 fuel on engines is also needed, especially possible damage to engine valves and cylinders.

The Japanese automakers said it would take them at least 18 months to develop vehicles running on E85 after the government made clear the tax structures on both the fuel and the vehicles.

Meanwhile, automakers from western countries including Ford, Volvo and Chevrolet welcomed the government's plan to push the E85 this year. Most of them are ready to import E85-powered vehicles in three months since their flexible-fuel vehicles capable of running on E10 to E85 are already marketed in Brazil and the United States.

But the Japanese car companies, said the source, are unsure whether the E85-powered cars they are building elsewhere could meet the requirement of Euro 4 emission standard in Thailand.

They also have doubts whether the E85 technology in Brazil and the United States could simply be adopted here due to the differences in climate conditions and ethanol quality.

Renault-Nissan Alliance zeros in on emission free vehicles and advanced FCV prototypes

2007 Renault Scenic

Paris, France
– May 29, 2008 – A zero-emission motoring future has moved two steps closer thanks to environmental commitments from the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

For the initial step, Renault-Nissan Alliance will mass-market electric vehicle in Israel and Denmark in 2011 as announced at the beginning of this year. Moreover, Nissan has recently announced its plans to start selling electric vehicle in the US and Japan by the end of 2010.

And for the second step, Renault-Nissan Alliance is developing fuel cell-powered electric vehicle Two prototypes are currently in an advanced engineering phase:

• Nissan’s pioneering X-Trail fuel cell vehicle has been undergoing ‘realworld’ testing for more than two years, with examples leased to government authorities in Japan.

• The most recent development is a Renault prototype called Scenic ZEV H2. Based on a Renault Grand Scenic, Scenic ZEV H2 is a joint Alliance development. It features Nissan’s in-house developed fuel cell stack, highpressure hydrogen storage tank and compact lithium-ion batteries. Renault engineers and technicians prepared the Grand Scenic architecture to accept the different FCV elements under the floor, thus managing to keep ample cabin space for five adults, and to integrate Renault and Nissan electric and electronic systems.

Nissan X-trail FCV

Both FCVs have been created to demonstrate the viability of the fuel cell concept – the only by-product is water – and to underline the Alliance’s commitment to a zero emissions future. Renault Scenic ZEV H2 and Nissan X-Trail FCV will be taking part in environmental road shows across Europe this summer.

From June to September, Nissan will demonstrate the X-Trail FCV in six European countries while Renault will showcase the Scenic ZEV H2 at its Environmental Workshop in Barcelona during the second half of June.

BASF wins Volkswagen award as eco-friendly supplier

Volkswagen Group Award 2008

Ludwigshafen, Germany – May 29, 2008 – BASF has received the “Group Award 2008” in recognition of its role as top supplier to Volkswagen (VW). Dr. Stefan Marcinowski, member of BASF’s Board of Executive Directors, was presented with the award by Prof. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, and Francisco J. Garcia Sanz, member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft responsible for procurement. In particular, the award honored the development of BASF’s Hydraulan® 404 brake fluid. Hydraulan enhances the braking performance of vehicles and is better for the environment because it needs to be changed less frequently. Thus, the total volume of brake fluid used and disposed of by Volkswagen Group and its garages is reduced by around one-third. The Volkswagen Group Award is given to VW Group’s 15 best suppliers each year.

“We are very pleased to receive this prestigious award, which combines sustainability and customer benefit. It acts as an incentive for us to contribute to Volkswagen’s continued success by delivering innovative products and system solutions,” said Marcinowski. According to Rüdiger Mackenthun, head of BASF’s Automotive & Refinery Chemicals business unit: “With products like Hydraulan, VW and BASF are together assuming responsibility for the continued development of environmentally efficient, advanced and safe products for automobiles.”

In awarding the environment prize, Volkswagen looks not only at product quality but also takes into account whether the supplier operates an environmental management system. BASF was impressive in all categories: Hydraulan needs to be replaced and disposed of only every three rather than every two years. Another advantage is that the brakes of Hydraulan-equipped VW vehicles react up to 30 percent faster. Finally, BASF combines business success in all areas with global responsibility for environmental and climate protection and has made this an integral part of its corporate strategy.

Nissan to build new plant for export from China

Nissan Japanese carmaker will team up with its joint venture partner, China’s Dongfeng Motor Group, each hold a 50% stake in the business to construct a $145m plant in Henan province by 2010.

The new plant is Nissan’s fifth in China, will have the capacity to produce 120,000 vans and goods vehicles. and Dongfeng Motor will also increase the number of Nissan-branded cars made.

Ten new models of Nissan will be launched as part of a target to raise total annual production by the joint venture business, Dongfeng Motor, from 610,000 vehicles to 1 million by 2012. Since being established in 2003, the business has proved an effective springboard for Nissan to grow its brand in China, where there is fierce competition among foreign operators.

Nearly 460,000 Nissan vehicles were sold in China last year, up from 94,000 units in 2003. By 2012, Nissan plans to raise its own-brand sales to 800,000.

Dongfeng’s investment programme will see it boost the number of car dealerships it operates and double its share of exports.

“Our goal is to build and maintain a strong position in the Chinese markets,” said Kimiyasu Nakamura, the firm’s president.

VW working on High-Performance Energy Storage with Sanyo

May 28, 2008 0 comments

Volkswagen Golf TDi Hybrid Concept Car @ 2008 Geneva Motor Show

Dynamic partnership between the Volkswagen Group and Sanyo

Wolfsburg, Germany -- Agreement has been reached on a co-operation which sees Volkswagen joining forces with Sanyo, one of the world’s leading developers of rechargeable batteries, to work on new and extremely efficient high-performance storage systems based on lithium-ion technology.

“Our focus in future,” says Prof Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, “will be directed more strongly at making electrically powered automobiles alongside ones driven by more efficient combustion engines. Drivetrain electrification is the way forward if we wish to secure mobility in tomorrow’s world. This will involve energy recovery. The whole idea will be to no avail, however, as long as we do not have powerful energy storage systems at our disposal and as long as vehicle operations are not in tune with customer demands. This cooperation is an important step for us,” Winterkorn adds.

Emissions-free travel in an all-electric operating modus is already possible today, though only at limited speeds and over short distances. That makes it all the more important to develop new accumulators with the capacity, size, weight and cost attributes which will enable them to be used more efficiently in tomorrow’s automobiles. Lithium-ion technology, already very successfully used in communications electronics and portable computers, has the potential to satisfy even the particularly exacting demands placed on electro-traction systems in motor vehicles.

Back in March, at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen showcased its Golf TDI Hybrid design study, which demonstrated just how much potential for energy reduction there is when you combine high-tech-diesel, electric-drive and 7-speed-DSG technology. Conceived as a powerful full-hybrid vehicle, the Golf TDI Hybrid can be operated using combustion-engine power only or using a combination of combustion and electric drive or using E-drive – i.e. the powerful and energy-efficient combination of TDI technology and an electric motor. The A1 project quattro presented by Audi at the most recent Tokyo Motor Show features a powertrain already designed to cover a distance of 100 km using this innovative storage method. The Group hopes to be able to employ lithium-ion technology in its first vehicles by 2010.

Toyota eyes diesel options

Bangkok, Thailand --In the face of runaway fuel prices and huge imported oil bills, Toyota Motor Corporation and two of its local units will collaborate with PTT Plc, the national energy group, to develop a hydrogenation process to produce diesel fuel from vegetable oil.

The process hydrogenates a vegetable or mineral oil mix to produce high-quality biodiesel suitable for blending with diesel fuel to create a greener alternative fuel for vehicles.

The new project will start after Toyota Motor, Toyota Motor Thailand Co (TMT), Bangkok-based Toyota Motor Asia Pacific Engineering and Manufacturing Co and PTT sign a memorandum of understanding on Friday, when the budget for the project would be announced.

In a similar biodiesel project launched in 2006, Toyota and PTT, in collaboration with Kasetsart University, have been conducting experiments to develop biodiesel from the fruit of jatropha, a crop that can be grown even on barren land.

The ongoing experiments required a total investment of 33 million baht in three years, of which 15 million baht was borne by Toyota and the balance by PTT.

The project is experimenting with jatropha varieties suitable for the Thai climate, production methods, and oil extraction methods.

It is also testing biodiesel production techniques, compatibility with engines and fuel supply systems, durability, emissions and cost effectiveness.

If the experiments prove successful, Toyota would produce vehicles with engines suitable for biodiesel.

Jatropha would become an economic crop that cuts oil imports and increases the use of locally made fuel.

E85 push could sink eco-cars Carmakers would face huge expenses

Bangkok, Thailand -- The government's new push for E85 fuel could cause the much-promoted eco-car programme to collapse, local automakers have warned.

Cabinet ministers yesterday approved a broad plan aimed at helping the country reduce energy consumption even as oil and pump prices continue to set records each week.

The highlight is a push to introduce E85 fuel, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% premium petrol, into the local market over the next few months, or three years ahead of earlier targets.

Energy Minister Poonpirom Liptapanlop said excise tax rates for E85- compatible cars would be cut to promote the plan. Corporate taxes for ethanol producers would also be reduced.

Ministers also agreed to require state vehicles to convert to NGV (natural gas for vehicles), strictly enforce speed limits of 90 kilometres per hour to conserve fuel, and reduce air-conditioner use in public buildings.

Lt. Gen. Poonpirom said that PTT Plc would also increase NGV stations nationwide to 355 from 245 by year-end, and tax breaks would be extended for NGV cars until 2012. All 6,000 buses of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority also would have NGV kits installed.

Authorities estimate that Thailand could save up to 96 billion baht a year on imported oil if E85 use rose to 60% of total consumption by 2011. Oil costs the country 700 billion baht a year.

But Suparat Sirisuwannakura, an executive vice-president of Toyota Motor Thailand, cautioned that carmakers would need huge sums of money to upgrade their production lines for E85.

Tax incentives would also affect business plans for the six manufacturers already committed to the eco-car programme, which include Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

The eco-cars, launched by the Surayud Chulanont government, will carry an excise tax of just 17% compared with standard rates of 30% to 50%. Eco-cars must have a maximum engine size of 1.4 litres and meet strict fuel efficiency and emission standards.

While tax rates for E85 cars have not been finalised, Mr Suparat said a rate of 20% would almost certainly lead manufacturers to abandon eco-cars in favour of E85 models.

If restrictions on fuel consumption, local content and annual production for E85 incentives are less than for eco-cars, that would push producers away from the small-car programme.

Only Volvo currently offers E85- compatible cars locally. E20 fuel was just launched in February and is still in limited supply, although E10 gasohol is now widely used. Only an estimated 50 stations, all by state-controlled PTT and Bangchak, now offer E20.

One Industry Ministry official acknowledged that the push to E85 would require huge capital investment, both by carmakers and energy companies.

With E85 used in only a few countries, promoting it locally could have huge ramifications for Thailand's position as an auto manufacturing hub, as export opportunities could be restricted compared with other engine technologies.

Another auto executive expressed frustration over the changes in policy.
"I just wish that the government would focus on one thing," he said. "Take compressed natural gas - already seven car manufacturers have committed to producing CNG cars this year. Now, the government wants E85. What will come next?"

Suwit Khunkitti, the deputy prime minister and industry minister, said he would discuss the policies with eco-car producers.

He also expressed confidence that ethanol production could meet demand. Authorities have licensed 47 producers with a targeted daily output of 4.2 million litres. Eleven producers now make 900,000 litres a day, mainly from cassava and molasses.

One PTT executive said privately that ethanol-based fuel was not necessarily cheaper than petrol. "With E10, fuel consumption is about 2-3% higher than petrol due to the lower heat value for ethanol," the executive said.

Ford Plans To Take Back Philippines Market Share

May 27, 2008 0 comments

US carmaker Ford has outlined plans aimed at making up lost ground in the Philippines, where the company has recently been overtaken in volume sales terms by South Korea's Hyundai. The plan focuses on two main areas - raising Asia exports by adding new markets and boosting domestic sales with the launch of new models. According to Ford Philippines president Richard Baker, exports should rise by 40% in value terms to US$75mn, based on improved regional economic conditions and the addition of Singapore and Brunei as export destinations. Ford Philippines currently exports its locally-produced Ford Focus and Escape and their sister models, the Mazda 3 and Tribute, to Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.

On the domestic front, Baker commented that the company is aiming to raise sales by around 10% in 2008, which would mean selling around 8,000 more vehicles than last year. In particular, Ford will look to its best-selling model, the Everest SUV, which has already achieved growth of 50% year-on-year (y-o-y) in Q108. Another factor will be the choice of powertrain for new models. Baker added that Hyundai's success is partly due to its range of diesel models, which have proven popular at a time of high fuel prices.

In its attempt to boost its domestic sales and fight back against Hyundai, which has taken Ford's fourth place in the market, the US manufacturer plans to roll out its own range of diesel models. Two new models are slated for launch later in the year and will be new versions of existing models.

Engines already play an important part in Ford's strategy for the Philippines and as such, the company invested PHP1.1bn in a flex-fuel engine facility, which opened in 2007. Over the next five years, the facility will produce around 100,000 engines, capable of running on a 90:10 gasoline to ethanol combination. The engines will initially be fitted into the Ford Focus, and later in the Escape SUV and Mazda models, including the Mazda3 and Tribute SUV. Output is also exported to other markets in the ASEAN bloc and South Africa.

The recent performance of the Philippines auto market suggests that the conditions are suited to growth plans for manufacturers. After topping the 100,000 unit mark for the first time in 2007, sales in the first four months of 2008 reached 39,981 units. In April alone, sales were up by 4.3% from March, and up by 28.4% from April 2007, at 11,078 units. This puts the market on track to achieve CAMPI's forecast of 125,000 units in 2008, which is in line with BMI's projection of 127,335 units. However, Ford was not even in the top five for sales in the year to April.

Toyota to build new battery plant

Toyota Prius Battery

Tokyo, Japan --Toyota Motor Corp., seeking to stay in pole position in the fuel efficient car race, unveiled plans Friday to build a new factory producing batteries for eco-friendly vehicles.

The move comes amid growing competition between Japanese automakers to tap demand for economical cars amid soaring prices at the pump.

Toyota's joint venture with its partner Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. plans to spend 20 billion yen (192 million dollars) to build a plant in Kosai in central Shizuoka Prefecture, said Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma.

Toyota has taken a lead in sales of hybrids, selling more than one million of its Prius model -- the world's first mass-produced hybrid -- since its launch about a decade ago.

But it is facing renewed competition from other Japanese automakers such as Honda as well as overseas rivals in the green automobile race.

Earlier the Nikkei business daily reported that Toyota aims to double its annual production of batteries for eco-friendly cars to one million units by 2011.

The joint venture, Panasonic EV Energy Co. (PEVE), will invest a total of 70 billion yen (673 million dollars) to expand production of the batteries, the Nikkei reported without naming its sources.

It said Toyota would build a new nickel metal-hydride battery plant in Taiwa, Miyagi Prefecture, though the automaker denied such decision had been taken.

The report said another new plant would produce lithium ion batteries for Toyota plug-in hybrids -- the first time Toyota has mass produced lithium-ion batteries.

Automakers have for years been competing to develop lithium-ion rechargeable batteries suitable for long distance hybrids, but there have been safety concerns after massive recalls by laptop computer manufacturers.

Nissan Motor Co. said this week it and NEC Corp. will invest 115 million dollars to mass produce new batteries for electric, hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles.

Honda Motor -- like Toyota a pioneer of hybrid-engine cars -- said this week it plans to introduce what it describes as an affordable hybrid in early 2009.

Hybrids are equipped with an electric motor and a standard petrol engine, making them more economical and environmentally friendly than conventional autos.

Thai govt. decides to cut excise tax on E85

Bangkok, Thailand. -- An initiative to introduce E85 gasohol, the 85% ethanol-blended gasoline, to the Thai market received a boost yesterday when the government decided to cut the excise tax on it to promote the use of alcohol-fuelled cars.

General Motors, Ford and Volvo are the first group of car makers ready to import their E85-fuelled vehicles to the Thai market within three months after the government finalised the exact rate for the tax, and this will generate demand in the local market, said Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee after a meeting of economic ministers aimed at curbing rising energy prices.

The three western car makers could set up local production lines for the cars within 18 months. Japanese car makers said they could open local production lines of E85-fuelled cars within two years.

E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% premium petrol, will be introduced in Thailand as world oil prices continue to skyrocket.

To encourage car makers to market cars using E85, Mr Surapong said, the government will cut the excise tax on the cars to below 25%, which is the tax now imposed on E20-fuelled cars.

Current excise tax rate for normal passenger cars is at a minimum of 30% and rises depending on engine size.

The Finance Ministry will ask for government approval in principle on the tax reduction today.

The exact rate of the reduction and details of other energy conservation schemes will be proposed for cabinet endorsement next week, he said.

To facilitate the use of E85 fuel in Thailand, PTT Plc and Bangchak Petroleum Plc are ready to sell E85 in their 30-50 service stations within 3-5 months. Sales of the fuel could be swiftly increased depending on demand.

He said the supply of ethanol to produce E85 is sufficient. At present, 11 ethanol producers could supply 900,000 litres per day, compared with demand of 800,000 litres. By next year, the number of producers will increase to 22 with total production capacity of 2.5 million litres per day.

The government would also extend the excise tax reduction for cars using natural gas for vehicles (NGV) and related equipment until 2012, said the minister.

The extension includes tax on imported NGV-using completely built-up (CBU) car units which is cut to zero per cent from 30%, tax for cars with engines modified to use NGV, which has now been reduced to 22% from 30%, and tax on imported NGV cylinders and gas controlling equipment.

The government will push to have all state agencies' vehicles modified to use NGV and set a target to boost the number of private car owners using NGV to 120,000 by the end of this year from 71,000 now.

Mr Surapong also said the cabinet would kick off its energy conservation schemes by increasing the temperature of the air-conditioning units in the cabinet meeting room to 26 degrees Celsius.

Continental firms to establish €100 million plant in Thailand

May 26, 2008 0 comments

The German automotive supplier Continental AG plans to invest 100 million euros or five billion baht building its first plant in Thailand, aiming to expand into Southeast Asian markets.

The government's promotion of eco-car manufacturing encouraged the company to invest in Thailand, said Thomas Chambers, managing director of Continental Automotive (Thailand) Co.

''Guidelines for eco-car production in Thailand, be they fuel efficiency or safety requirements, are close to Continental's technology,'' he said following the foundation stone laying ceremony on Wednesday at the Amata City Industrial Estate in Rayong.

The plant, expected to be operational by mid-2009, would create around 1,000 new jobs.

Jay Kunkel, a member of the managing board of Continental, said the investment reflected the company's strategy to strengthen Asian operations where it hopes to generate 20-25% of its sales by 2015.

''We recognise the importance of Thailand as a manufacturing hub and this new dedicated manufacturing plant in Rayong marks a strategic step toward our goal to become a leading automotive components and systems supplier in Thailand and across Asia,'' he said.

Mr Kunkel said the powertrain and interior electronics manufacturing plant in Thailand represented the latest milestone in Continental's Asean expansion plans.

Mr Chambers said Continental would continue to raise awareness of its broad product range in the Thai market for automotive electronics, tyres and rubber components.

''Despite being only a recent entrant into the Thai market, Continental already has booked orders for business starting in 2010. ... This confirms that Thailand is the right market to enter and further growth opportunities exist.''

The Thailand plant is the company's fourth facility in Asean after Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. It plans to produce 500,000 diesel commonrail systems, 2.5 million fuel injection units, 500,000 fuel rails and interior electronics components.

Mazda city car : from concept to production

Mazda world design -- Mazda’s new baby! These are the first official sketches of the firm’s forthcoming city car – which will be revealed in concept form at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Likely to be badged Mazda 1 when it goes on sale in late 2009, the urban runabout will rival the Volkswagen up! and Toyota’s iQ.

As you can see from these drawings, it’s the first model to bring the design themes showcased by the company’s Nagare concept to reality. The sporty look of the 2 supermini is evolved with a taller roofline to boost headroom, but key details including dramatic slashes in the bodywork and short overhangs are retained.

The city car concept is likely to feature Perspex panels, plus sliding side doors and seats, which will increase practicality, too.

Peter Birthwhistle, chief designer at Mazda’s European Research and Development Centre, said: “The finished article will be even more radical than the car seen here. It will be aimed at young people and feature the likes of iPod connectivity, sat-nav and Blue- tooth. It will be environmentally friendly, and weigh as little as possible.”

The concept is likely to be powered by a combination of fuel cells and batteries. The firm will also reveal a new 4x4 at the Moscow Motor Show in August, based on Ford’s Kuga, which could make its way here. And it is working on an RX-7 replacement that also follows the Nagare design theme.

Honda Extends Relationship with IndyCar Racing

Honda Performance Development (HPD), American Honda's headquarters for professional auto racing operations, has extended its relationship with the Indy Racing League and plans to supply engines to the IndyCar Series for the next five years.

Honda joined the IndyCar Series at the start of the 2003 season, and became single supplier of racing engines to the series in 2006.

"In the six years that Honda has been a part of the Indy Racing League, we've had a great deal of success, both against strong competition from other auto manufacturers and as single engine supplier," said Erik Berkman, president of HPD, located in Santa Clarita, CA. "Honda is pleased to be part of the IndyCar Series, as it provides both a technical challenge for our engineers and a showcase for Honda products worldwide."

Today's announcement that the League will host a manufacturers' roundtable in June to openly discuss future chassis and engine rules was also welcomed by Berkman. "We are delighted by the League's decision to welcome automotive manufacturers to Indianapolis next month. We look forward to the continued growth of IndyCar racing, and potential participation by additional engine manufacturers."

"I am very excited about Honda's decision today as it brings stability and continuity to a very competitive racing package," said Brian Barnhart, President of Competition and Operations for the League. "We're encouraged by Honda's commitment to the IndyCar Series, and their willingness to assist us in growing the series, both on and off the race track."

Honda entered the IndyCar Series in 2003, and scored 28 victories in 49 races (2003-05) against strong competition from opposing manufacturers, including Indy 500 and IndyCar drivers' and manufacturers' championships in 2004 and '05. Overall, including its 65 victories in the CART Champ Car series from 1994-2002, Honda owns 128 race victories in open-wheel competition in the U.S.

During the course of the 17-race 2007 IndyCar Season, 36 drivers, utilizing the Honda Indy V8 (HI7R) racing engine, recorded a total of 166,608 miles with just a single in-race engine failure - a demonstration of outstanding design and build quality rarely seen in a highly stressed racing engine. For the second consecutive season, Honda also powered the entire 33-car starting field at the 2007 Indianapolis 500. And for the second year in a row - and the only two times in '500' history - there was not a single engine-related retirement in the event.

Perfect premiere: One-two for new Scirocco GT24

The new Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 celebrated its race premiere with a one-two in its class at a well attended 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. In front of a crowd of about 200,000 spectators the brace of 325 hp Sport-Coupés driven by Jimmy Johansson (S), Florian Gruber (D), Thomas Mutsch (D) and Hans-Joachim Stuck (A) and Carlos Sainz (E), Giniel de Villiers (RSA), Dieter Depping (D) and again Hans-Joachim Stuck (A) claimed first and second positions in the well-represented class for cars with two-litre turbo engines. In a field of 219 cars and in front of innumerable more powerful sports and touring cars the teams occupied positions 11 and 15 overall. The third factory entered Coupé of Dr Ulrich Hackenberg (D), Bernd Ostmann (D), Matthias Malmedie (D) and Altfrid Heger (D) completed the first sporting success of the new Scirocco, which is available from dealers in August, with fifth position in class and 32nd overall.

"A great result for the new Scirocco: The one-two in class and eleventh overall in the 24-hour race underlines the sporting dynamic and reliability of the new Volkswagen Coupés,” explained Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Volkswagen Board of Management of the Volkswagen Brand with responsibility for Development. "I want to thank everyone who supported this ambitious and courageous project to race the Scirocco before its market launch in one of the hardest events in motorsport.” Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen was also extremely satisfied: "The Race-Scirocco was developed, built and tested in only 75 days. To get three cars to complete the entire distance on one of the world’s most demanding tracks first time out, and without serious problems, speaks volumes for the excellent performance of the entire team.”

The eleven Volkswagen drivers praised the front-wheel drive Race-Scirocco with 2.0 litre TFSI engine and DSG Direct Shift Gearbox: "Sensational just how fast and indestructible a brand new car like the Scirocco can be. I would have preferred to have done another few hours,” says Hans-Joachim Stuck, Motorsport Representative of the Volkswagen Group, excitedly. Two-time Rally World Champion Carlos Sainz drove first ever 24-hour race: "The race at the Nürburgring is a genuine challenge. The Scirocco made it very easy for us drivers to run quickly and safely in both wet and dry conditions,” explained Sainz.

The three brand new Sciroccos, which completed in their very first race, impressed with enormous reliability and fast lap times - they set the pace in qualifying with positions one, two and four. During the race, in addition to the normal pit stops, only three unscheduled stops were made (servo pump change on #116, a tyre failure on #117 and a loose under body on #118).

36th ADAC Zurich 24h Race : Manthey completes the hat-trick

May 25, 2008 0 comments

The 36th ADAC Zurich 24h Race at the Nürburgring reached its denouement with a third consecutive overall victory for team boss Olaf Manthey to add to his wins in 2006 and 2007. After 148 laps (3,755.94 km) of racing, the driver line-up of Timo Bernhard / Marc Lieb / Romain Dumas / Marcel Tiemann (Germany / Germany / Switzerland / Monaco) brought their Porsche 911 GT3-RSR home in style in front of 220,000 fans lining the 25.378-km circuit. It was a perfect weekend for former DTM driver Manthey, as his second car piloted by Armin Hahne / Christian Haarmann / Jochen Krumbach / Pierre Kaffer (Monaco / Germany / Germany / Switzerland) came home in second place. This was the Porsche 911 GT3-MR that won the 2006 edition of the race for Manthey. Third position in what was, at times, a dramatic race went to the two-times Nürburgring 24h winner Sabine Schmitz and her German team-mates Klaus Abbelen, Dr Edgar Althoff and Kenneth Heyer in their Porsche 997. The lead changed hands seventeen times over the course of the marathon Eifel race, with seven different teams getting a taste of life at the head of the field.

“This hat-trick of victories is the crowning glory of my career as a team boss,” beamed Olaf Manthey after his cars completed their one-two finish. However, their success was only achieved after the shock of an early setback. The number 1 Porsche was forced to dive into the pits on the opening lap after its water system developed a fault. This early misfortune served only to inspire a brilliant charge through the field culminating at 3.30 in the morning, when the team finally took over the lead. “We had some minor technical hitches to deal with early on, but apart from that we put together a virtually perfect race,” smiled Manthey. “The guys in the pits and in the cockpit did an excellent job.” His drivers certainly had every reason to celebrate – none more so than Marcel Tiemann, whose fourth victory in the ADAC Zurich 24h Race has elevated him into an elite club of the most successful drivers in the race’s history. “It’s fantastic, a wonderful feeling,” said the adopted Monegasque as he was swept up in the post-race relief. “This fourth win is something very special and puts me up there with the best. It also means I’ve completed a hat-trick with the same team. It’s just great.” There was jubilation too in the pit garage of the “Frikadelli” Porsche squad run by meat products manufacturer Klaus Abbelen. The Porsche 997 team of Abbelen, Dr Edgar Althoff and Sabine Schmitz made it into the top three, with Schmitz – as the only woman on the podium – once again underlining her claim as the most successful female driver in the history of the endurance classic. “The important thing was how consistently we performed over the whole 24 hours,” summed up the local favourite. “This third place is another high point in my career and means a lot to me. The team only came together at the start of the season and has put its heart and soul into the job in hand. I’m tremendously pleased for the whole team.”

Stuck clinches class victory; eye-catching success for Frentzen

There were also a lot of smiling faces in the garage of the Volkswagen works team at the ADAC Zurich 24h Race. Ahead of the market launch of the company’s new Scirocco, motorsport boss Kris Nissen sent the racing version of the fledgling car to prove its mettle in the world’s toughest race. And his decision paid off, the combination of Hans-Joachim Stuck, Thomas Mutsch, Giniel de Villiers and Dieter Depping finishing eleventh in the overall classification and claiming victory in their class. In so doing, the Scirocco came home ahead of its sister car (14th overall), in which three-times 24-hour race winner Stuck joined forces with two-times rally world champion Carlos Sainz. “We gave the Volkswagen Scirocco a really fantastic debut with the class victory,” said Stuck after the race. “It was an extraordinary experience shared with extraordinary team-mates. Putting in a successful performance alongside global stars such as Carlos Sainz in this amazing arena and in the world’s most exacting race gave me huge pleasure.” Heinz-Harald Frentzen, meanwhile, was celebrating an eye-catching success of his own. The ex-Formula One driver showcased the race technology of the future in the shape of the hybrid-drive Apollo racing car. After his team had worked through some technical problems, Frentzen went back out onto the circuit for the final one-and-a-half hours of the race to take his dashing new racer on a lap or two of honour and thank the fans and race organisers for their support. “I would like to thank all our technical partners and team members,” said Frentzen at the finish. “You can look at our result in two ways. On the one hand, we had two lots of problems with the gearbox in the conventional drive system. But, from a different perspective, the brake energy regeneration concept exceeded our expectations.”

Thailand E85 fuel could arrive this year Refiners ordered to share the wealth

May 24, 2008 0 comments

Bangkok, Thailand -- Thailand will introduce E85 gasohol in the third quarter of this year, a full three years ahead of earlier plans, Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee declared yesterday. Authorities yesterday also told local oil refineries they must accept lower margins on diesel fuel in order to help finance a new stabilisation fund.

The announcements came in light of continuing gains in world oil prices, which topped $135 a barrel earlier this week but were trading around $132 in London markets yesterday.

Ethanol production, mostly from molasses and cassava, has jumped as authorities look to reduce the country's dependence on imported crude oil.

E85 is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% premium petrol. E10, containing 10% ethanol, is already widely used in the local market. Authorities introduced E20 this year as local automakers began to offer E20-compatible cars.

It is not clear whether the country could produce enough ethanol to meet demand for E85 fuel.

''Accelerating the rollout of E85 ... is one of a package of new measures that we will adopt to help address the energy crisis,'' Dr Surapong said.

He said economic ministers would review details of the new energy package on Monday.

''E85 will help reduce fuel costs for consumers. Pump prices will be cheaper than standard petrol by as much as 10 baht per litre,'' he said.

Dr Surapong said world automakers already had developed E85-compatible engines overseas, and they could be imported into the country for local use. Carmakers with domestic production facilities could also open new lines to produce E85-compatible cars.

''We need to create new options for the public in using fuel, whether it be NGV (natural gas for vehicles), LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) or gasohol,'' Dr Surapong said.

Currently only Volvo offers E85- compatible cars in the local market, with its C30 sedan launched last year.

Pornchai Rujiprapa, the permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry, said the early introduction of E85 should not be a problem, as demand was likely to be low in the early stages.

''Very few cars can run on E85, so it shouldn't be a problem. If we are to encourage motorists to use E85, the automakers need to be ready as well,'' he said.

The listed refiner and retailer Bangchak Petroleum late last year began a pilot test of E85 fuel and is currently gearing up for a commercial launch.

Oil refineries, meanwhile, were told yesterday to accept lower margins on diesel, with the savings used to help finance a ''crisis management'' fund.

Energy Minister Poonpirom Liptapanlop said refineries were enjoying huge margins due to high oil prices.

The refineries, largely controlled by the majority state-owned PTT Plc, should help finance a new management fund using part of their refining profits, she said. No details on the policy or fund was announced.

Margins between Dubai crude prices and Singapore diesel prices rose to US$44 per barrel on Thursday, compared with an average $35 in April. Gross refining margins averaged $5 to $6 per barrel in April.

Lt-Gen Poonpirom said margins for refineries differed based on their technology and type of refined oil produced.

But she said the policy would cover Bangchak, Thai Oil Plc, PTT Aromatics and Refinery, and IRPC, which collectively account for 70% of the country's refining capacity of 995,000 barrels a day. Executives of the four companies will meet with the minister on Monday.''This is not market intervention. [The government] is asking for help for the poor amid high oil rice volatility,'' Lt Gen Poonpirom added.

Manoon Siriwan, a local energy expert, said margins were not unreasonably high, as they offset energy companies' losses from their sales of subsidised LPG and low-margin fuel oil.

The firms also used their refining profits to help offset losses from retail operations, he added.

2009 Aston Martin DB9 gets more power

Aston Martin introduced a revised version of the company’s critically acclaimed DB9 at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, which includes significant enhancements to standard specification.

These changes include a revised version of Aston Martin’s 6.0 litre V12 engine to deliver improved power and torque. Peak power of 470bhp (350kW) - increased by 20bhp (30Nm) - is now reached at 6,000rpm, resulting in a power to weight ratio of 267bhp per tonne (199kW/tonne) - an increase of 11bhp per tonne over the existing Aston Martin DB9.

Peak torque of 600Nm is delivered at 5,000rpm, providing even more accessible power for the driver, as well a greater performance feel overall. Accordingly, top speed is now 190mph (306km/h) and the benchmark 0-60mph time improves by 0.3 seconds for the Touchtronic transmission - which benefits from a new valve box and integrated transmission controls to achieve quicker gear shifts - to 4.6 seconds and by 0.1 seconds to 4.6 seconds for the manual gearbox.

The latest Aston Martin DB9 also incorporates a series of chassis developments for both the Coupe and Volante derivates. Bilstein dampers are introduced in addition to revised upper suspension arms and retuned suspension bushes to deliver improved ride quality; aiding greater refinement in the Volante and an enhanced sporting feel in the Coupe. The Aston Martin DB9 Volante also benefits from revisions to the front shear panel which increases torsional rigidity by 10%, further improving refinement.

The Aston Martin DB9 manages to combine all facets of style, quality and usability of a traditional Aston Martin without relying on retrospective detail or design. Accordingly, styling changes to the revised Aston Martin DB9 are subtle, reflecting the car’s timeless design and understated elegance.

Exterior styling changes include the introduction of a new standard 19” 10-spoke alloy wheel, new door mirrors and a revised anodised aluminium five-bar grille. In the cabin changes include a new centre console constructed from die cast zinc with a painted iridium silver finish and the introduction of a new Emotion Control Unit (ECU) - first seen on the DBS in 2007. The ECU - constructed from glass, polished stainless steel and polycarbonate - replaces the key used previously for the DB9.

The innovative Aston Martin DB9 introduced an exciting new era for Aston Martin. The 2+2 sports car set new standards in its class due to its astonishing combination of technology, agility and design. The car marked the beginning of a new era for Aston Martin and became the first car to be hand-made at the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Sales of the Aston Martin DB9 started in spring 2004, and to date, more than 10,000 examples have been produced and delivered to customers around the world - surpassing the DB7 as the most successful Aston Martin of all time.

Deliveries of the updated Aston Martin DB9 begin during quarter two 2008, with prices from £113,950 for the DB9 Coupe and £122,950 for the DB9 Volante.

Los Angeles, CA -- The problem with global platforms is that what works really well for most of the world can really hurt in one specific market.

In the case of the outgoing Mazda6 midsize sedan, the U.S. market was stuck with a car that was too small and underpowered. It was a cruiserweight fighting in the heavyweight category.

For the 2009 redesign, Mazda created a modified, larger platform just for the U.S. market, creating a true rival to the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

The basics

In growing 4.5 inches in wheelbase and nearly seven inches in overall length, the redesigned Mazda6 has measurements that place it near the top of the mid-size sedan segment.

Its base engine goes toe-to-toe with the segment leaders, and the optional V-6 is the largest and most powerful in the competitive set. Add to that the sporty styling that has become a Mazda hallmark, and the chances to conquest from the Big 3 Japanese entrants just got a lot better.

With the old model, Mazda tried to build sedan, five-door hatch and wagon variants, which added assembly line complexity. The hatch and wagon were not hot sellers, and the added complexity hurt vehicle quality. The 2009 Mazda6 comes only as a sedan. Also, the Mazda6 will be offered only in four trim levels, with two option packages, further reducing complexity.

Notable features

The body-in-white weighs about 70 pounds less than the old model, but the total car weighs about 200 pounds more.

Standard features include 16-inch wheels, halogen headlights, rear window defogger, intermittent wipers, split fold-down rear seats, six-speaker CD stereo with MP3 compatibility, illuminated vanity mirrors, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power mirrors, locks and windows, air conditioning with pollen filter, and disc brakes at all corners.

Whereas many sedan trunks open with hinges that impinge on luggage space, the Mazda6 uses elegant gas struts. The Mazda6 is the only midsize sedan that offers 18-inch wheels.

Standard safety features include dynamic stability control, traction control, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and six airbags.

"This car gives us the opportunity to take away from the edges of Camry, Accord and Altima," said Robert Davis, Mazda senior vice president of product development and quality. "We have a game changer that can get the buyer who wants sporty fun and style, and who wants to get away from the appliances."

Compromises and shortcomings

Like BMW, Mazda's upshift/downshift controls on the auto-manual gearbox are backward compared to the industry standard. To give the car a sportier ride, Mazda made the suspension a bit too busy, without sufficient suppleness. The coupe-like roofline means backseat passengers lose headroom, and actually can get baked by the sun. The seats could use better lumbar support. The optional Sirius radio has many updated functions, but no "live traffic" setting for the navigation system.

The Market

While the Camry, Accord and Altima have increased sales progressively over the past decade, the Mazda6 has stayed flat. Mazda wants to sell 100,000 sedans annually in North America -- about 75,000 in the U.S. -- to start. But Mazda has the capacity at the Flat Rock, Mich., plant to build 125,000 units on straight time. Mazda expects a 70-30 split between four-cylinder and six-cylinder production.

The Skinny

Definitely sportier in appearance, the Mazda6 now has the features and size to go toe-to-toe with the competition. Look at what happened when the Mazda3 succeeded the dowdy Protege. If Mazda can get the word out properly, the same sales success could occur with the Mazda6.

Ford announces '08 production cuts : make more cars and crossovers, fewer trucks.

Ford Motor Co. said today it is making sweeping cuts to North American production and retreated from earlier profit outlooks, now saying it doesn't know how soon it expects North America to be profitable.

Ford said it is cutting production in North America by 15 percent in the second quarter from the same period a year ago, dropping output by 20,000 units to 690,000 vehicles. In the third quarter, Ford expects to build between 510,000 to 540,000 units, down 15 to 20 percent from the same period last year. Fourth quarter production is forecasted to be between 590,000 to 630,000, down 8 percent.

“The challenge affecting the entire industry is the accelerating shift in consumer demand away from large trucks and SUVs to smaller cars and crossovers — combined with a steep rise in commodity prices and the weak U.S. economy,” said CEO Alan Mulally.

Ford said it will shift its focus to higher cars and crossover production in the second half of 2008. Vehicles that will see a boost in production will include the Ford Fusion, Edge, Escape and Focus. Mercury’s Milan and Mariner will also see an increase along with the Lincoln MKZ and MKX.

Pickups and SUVs have taken a large hit and Ford Says that “substantially higher commodity costs” and changes in consumer buying patterns are hurting the company’s its financial outlook.

World premiere of the VW Scirocco GT24 with 325 PS

Wolfsburg, Germany -- 22 May 2008 - Volkswagen will present the world premiere of a 239 kW (325 PS) version of the new Scirocco today at the legendary GTI Meet at Wörther Lake. For two days later, a team of legendary drivers will start the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in the sports version of the Scirocco. Thus, the new Scirocco will be in the spotlight at two cult events for car enthusiasts at the same time.

Volkswagen is presenting the racing version of the Scirocco GT24 at Wörther Lake in a world premiere. "This car doesn't need to be driven to look fast. The Scirocco GT24 with the blue-white finish sits so low on its extended wheel wells that a hand will not fit between the wheel arch and the tyre. Yet the race car remains unmistakeably a Scirocco from every angle. Just even wider, even longer and even lower," says Volkswagen Chairman for Development Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, who will not be passing up the opportunity to sit behind the wheel in the race in the Eiffel. The 325 PS Scirocco will also be driven during the race by legendary drivers like rally world champion Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck, three-time winner of the 24-hour Nürburgring race. Incidentally, "Striezel" Stuck won the very first 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 1970. Now, thirty-eight years later, the Scirocco GT24 is competing. It draws its power from only two litres displacement: the 16-valve direct injection engine with a turbocharger and intercooler delivers its maximum torque of 340 Newton metres beginning from only 2,100 rpm. Gear changes are executed by a dual clutch gearbox (DSG), which is also available for the production model.

The idea of an affordable dream car was born in the 70s with the first Scirocco. The success of this two-seat sport coupe continued for nearly 20 years, during which time more than 360,000 Sciroccos were built. The enthusiasm for this car has been uninterrupted since Volkswagen presented the new version of the Scirocco at this year's Geneva Motor Show. The new car appears to have struck a chord with car buyers and will pick up with the success of the original Scirocco which, in the mean time, has developed into a cult car.

Kia releases official images of it’s 2009 Soul crossover

May 22, 2008 0 comments

Kia Motors Corporation has confirmed that its all-new production model will retain the spirit and name of the SOUL concept cars shown earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, and the first SOUL concept debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. As well as confirming the name, Kia has released the first official photograph of the production car, which will be called the ‘Kia Soul’.

“Reaction from the media and public to the three SOUL concept cars first unveiled at the Geneva Show in March and shown subsequently at other international events, has been overwhelmingly positive,” enthused Mr. Hyoung-Keun Lee, Senior Executive Vice President and COO, International Business Division, Kia Motors Corporation. “This reaction, plus the fact that both physically and emotionally the SOUL concept cars are so closely related to the new Kia Soul production car, made it a natural choice to retain this evocative name.”

“The SOUL concept cars reveal a whole new ‘fun’ side to Kia.They signal that our new Kia Soul production model is poised to defy convention and offer buyers a ‘world of possibilities’ for expressing their personality. This new model will reach out to a new group of consumers, appealing especially to the young and young-at-heart,” added Mr. Lee.

The three concept cars – SOUL Burner, SOUL Diva and SOUL Searcher – were created by Kia’s European design team led by Gregory Guillaume, under the guidance of Kia’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. They were developed from the original SOUL concept car designed jointly by Kia’s California and Korea design studios and unveiled in 2006 at Detroit.

Speaking about the choice of name for the original 2006 Detroit concept car, Tom Kearns, chief designer of Kia Motors America commented, “We wanted to inject some life into this car’s design and give it a soul. And of course ‘Soul’ also is a homophone for the home city of Kia Motors headquarters, in Korea so it’s a fun play on words.”

Kia’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, strongly endorsed that name choice at the
Geneva Show earlier this year, commenting, “The name SOUL accurately reflects how people will be able to ‘express their spirit—their psyche’ with this new product. Through a variety of options, accessories and colours, they will be able to personalize their Kia Soul and create a sense of individuality, making the car a true reflection of their personality.”

Looking ahead to the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Gregory Guillaume observed, “Because the new Kia Soul is not a replacement for an existing vehicle and is destined to play a unique role within the Kia global lineup, it can be a bit of a rebel! The trio of Geneva concepts were ‘appetisers’ for the new model introduction at Paris, and you can be certain that the new Kia Soul model will retain the core DNA of the three exciting concepts.”

The all-new Kia Soul defies classification but its design will encourage customers to build an emotional bond with this rebellious new car. To be made in Korea from September 2008, Kia Soul provides a creative platform for buyers to individualise and match their car to their own personalities.

The new Kia Soul production car will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show October 2008.

Honda plans to build hybrid version of Fit

May 21, 2008 0 comments

Tokyo, Japan --
Honda's fuel-sipping Fit will turn an even deeper shade of green with new plans to launch a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the popular subcompact in the early 2010s.

The hybrid Fit, announced here early today, will be the fourth hybrid from Honda Motor Co. by 2015, as the Japanese automaker chases rival Toyota Motor Corp. in the low-emission car race.

Honda already was planning to roll out an all new dedicated hybrid vehicle early next year, to challenged Toyota's Prius, followed by a sporty hybrid and a redesigned Civic hybrid.

The greener Fit's arrival dispels Honda's earlier skepticism about the viability of mounting pricey hybrid systems on small, low-priced cars that already get great mileage.

President Takeo Fukui has changed his tune -- in time with changing market realities.

"The Fit has great fuel efficiency to begin with, and if you put in a hybrid, it's going to get even better," Fukui said while announcing the car at a mid-year news conference. "So with crude oil prices going up this much, I think a Fit hybrid is now starting to make sense."

Honda Announces Additional Details on New Small Hybrid Vehicle

Honda today announced additional details regarding its new small hybrid scheduled for introduction in early 2009, as part of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. CEO Takeo Fukui's mid-year address. An official name and full product details will be announced later this year.

In addition to weight reduction, a significant cost reduction in Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) components will result in the most affordable hybrid vehicle to date. This dedicated hybrid vehicle will be offered as a 5-door hatchback with seating for five passengers and will employ an exterior design concept that evokes the FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle. Along with the Civic Hybrid, the new vehicle will be produced at an expanded IMA production line at Honda's Suzuka factory in Japan.

The new small gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle will have expected annual global sales of 200,000 units per year - approximately 100,000 of which are bound for the North American market. Following this launch, Honda also plans to introduce another unique small hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z sports car first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show as well as a Fit hybrid model. Including the Civic Hybrid, these four hybrid vehicles are expected to reach combined annual global sales of approximately 500,000 units.

"Honda has been at the forefront of hybrid development since it first introduced the American public to hybrid technology with the Insight in 1999," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. "These new advancements in Honda's technology and production systems will result in cost reductions that will allow us to make hybrid technology available to a whole new generation of buyers."

Featuring seating for five passengers, distinctive styling and high-value amenities, the new hybrid will present an appealing package. Taking advantage of reductions in the size of components, the battery and the internal processing unit will be positioned below the rear cargo area, allowing the hatchback design to provide adequate cargo space to meet the needs of a family. Additionally, various technologies, including a function to assist more fuel efficient driving, are being installed to achieve a further improvement of practical fuel efficiency. With its affordable price, the new hybrid vehicle will represent the best value in its segment.

The new hybrid will be produced at a newly developed second IMA production line at Honda's Suzuka factory, which currently produces the Civic Hybrid. With the second line in operation and improvements in IMA production efficiency, hybrid production capacity at Suzuka will increase from 70,000 vehicles per year to approximately 250,000 units, with future expansion possible if needed.

Honda is committed to offering products with the highest environmental performance produced at factories with reduced environmental footprints. A leader in the development of cleaner, more fuel-efficient mobility products, Honda introduced the first low-emission vehicles; America's first gas/electric hybrid car, the Insight and the world's first EPA-certified hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, among other environmental achievements. In 2007, Honda was named "greenest automaker" by the Union of Concerned Scientists for the fourth straight time.

American automakers fail to reach parts goals

Shanghai, China -- North American automakers and suppliers buying parts in China forecast serious shortfalls in their purchasing goals, says the PAC Group consultancy.

The Chinese auto industry has a shortage of local companies that can meet quality demands at a low price.

"The savings expectations are not being met by the pool of suppliers they have been going to," says Gene Slusiewicz, PAC's manager of supplier quality and global sourcing in Shanghai.

The PAC Group, a global consultancy, surveyed the top three automakers and several multinational suppliers in North America to arrive at those figures. It did not name the companies. In 2007, the top three automakers in North America based on sales were General Motors, Toyota Motor Corp., and Ford Motor Co.

The PAC study findings:

-- In 2008, the three automakers will source $8 billion less in components from China than they originally forecast. Suppliers will source $4 billion less.

-- By 2010, the automakers will face a shortfall of $16 billion, and suppliers of $7 billion.

General Motors executives acknowledge that sourcing from China will not meet their original rosy estimates. In 2004, GM said parts purchased from China would equal $10 billion by 2009, including parts for its China and worldwide operations.

But in January of this year, Kevin Wale, president of GM China Group, said, "I don't know how much more (China sourcing) will grow. It will not show the relative explosive growth [it has] over the last two years."

He declined to say how much GM had sourced in China for export in 2007. "Bo (Andersson, GM's global purchasing chief) won't let me say," Wale joked.

A shortage of qualified domestic Chinese companies is the root of the sourcing shortfall by the top North American companies, says the PAC study. Also, prices at domestic suppliers who can meet international standards have risen in China due to rising labor and raw material costs. A weakening dollar has also raised prices for exported parts.

Meanwhile, business with local brands such as Chery Automobile Co. has grown explosively. The local automakers have lower quality requirements and allow suppliers a larger profit margin, says the PAC report.

"As a result, many Chinese (suppliers) are not interested in low volume or export programs with multinational companies," the report says.

The reluctance to strive for exports is not true for every level of Chinese suppliers, however.

Plenty of smaller, tier three and four Chinese suppliers are still looking for export opportunities, says Matthew Li, director of the China sourcing office for Borg Warner Inc.

Foreign companies typically pay on time, so the risks are lower than in supplying domestic companies, says Li. Supplying multinational companies also gives small companies a chance to upgrade their technology and improve their production process, he says.

And, supplying a big multinational company is good for a small Chinese company's image, says Li.

Slusiewicz acknowledges that smaller suppliers are still enthusiastic about exporting. But he adds: "A lot of them are aftermarket and hope to break into the OEM market. But there is still a big gap between the aftermarket and OEM."

New Subaru confirmed for Acropolis

The Subaru World Rally Team ended months of speculation today by confirming its new Impreza World Rally Car will make its WRC debut on the next rally of the series - the Acropolis Rally of Greece.

Described by the team as ‘the most radically different Subaru World Rally Car in 15 years’ the new model - the Impreza WRC2008 - will be driven by Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson on the gravel event, which is round seven of the championship and starts on 29 May.

The new car is based on the most recent variant of the Impreza road car introduced in June 2007. But underneath the all new hatch-back bodyshell it retains the familiar Subaru powertrain of a horizontally-opposed turbocharged engine and symmetrical four-wheel drive system.

Detailed technical information will be revealed at the car’s official launch in Greece on 28 May, but the fact that the car carries - for the first time - the logo of suspension manufacturer BOS suggests it will retain the French company’s dampers.

Pre-launch pictures reveal a new livery for the WRC2008, marking the end of the familiar blue and yellow schemes which have decorated every one of the manufacturer’s cars since 1993. The team describes the new scheme, created around the Subaru corporate identity, as ‘dramatic’. One element of the colour scheme which is carried across, however, is the underlying metallic blue of the bodywork.

Subaru last won a WRC rally on the stages in Mexico 2005 and the team’s legions of fans around the world - not to mention its two drivers - are hoping the new car will herald a return to its rally winning days. Subaru took the FIA WRC manufacturers’ title in 1995, 1996 and 1997 and was the driving force behind three drivers’ title wins; with Colin McRae in 1995, Richard Burns in 2001 and most recently, Petter Solberg in 2003.

Solberg was deeply frustrated during the most recent rally in Sardinia and refused to talk to journalists about the reasons why he almost failed to finish inside the top 10. But he broke his silence to tell about the new car.

“Recently it’s been quite a stressful period for the whole team but I have good confidence that the new car should be reliable and fast,” said Solberg. “The whole package is completely different to the existing car and there are improvements all the way through. It’s the beginning of a new chapter in the Impreza story and personally I feel very proud. I’ve been involved in the project since the car was just a clay model in Japan, so it feels a bit like a baby to me.

“I have one day of testing with the car in France this week, to add to the two days I did before Sardinia. Of course it would have been nice to have a little more testing before we have to compete but it’s a team decision and I’m going to make the best of it in Greece.”

Alfa Romeo Brera S revealed

Few sports cars are developed specifically for Britain's roads. Those that have been tend to become true 'driver's cars'. Alfa Romeo is planning for the new, limited edition Alfa Romeo Brera S to join those ranks.

After a year of intensive suspension and chassis development at Prodrive, the world-leading motorsport specialist, the result is a sports coupe that subtly enhances all that is good about the original Alfa Brera, while bestowing it with outstanding driver feedback and handling.

Distinctly different from the rest of the line-up, this unique addition to Alfa Romeo's UK range includes refined styling changes, inside and out. And to ensure ultimate exclusivity, production of the Alfa Romeo Brera S will be limited to just 500 individually numbered models.

Power comes from a choice of two existing direct injection petrol engines - the 185 bhp 2.2 JTS and the 260 bhp 3.2 V6 JTS.

Marketing director at Alfa Romeo UK, Nicholas Bernard, says: "Significantly, the Alfa Romeo Brera S isn't simply about brute force, it's about how the available power is transferred to the road and how the road surface is communicated back to the driver to bring new levels of sports handling and driver-focused confidence and involvement."

Briefed to make the Alfa Romeo Brera S less of a long-distance tourer and more sporty on UK roads, the engineering team at Prodrive developed a unique suspension set-up. Prodrive engineers meticulously experimented with spring rates and ride heights to match the reduced weights of the 2008 model year Alfa Breras. Then followed an extensive damper tuning exercise to achieve the desired ride/handling balance and steering response required by driving enthusiasts in the UK.

According to Prodrive Project Leader, Peter Cambridge, the result is "a car that 'shrinks' around the driver and delivers all the fun and engagement of a sports car driving experience on A and B-roads. Yet, on motorways, offers a compliant and composed ride."

The sports car driving experience is achieved by reducing roll and pitch, flattening the cornering attitude, and subsequently instilling confidence-inspiring steering.

Peter Cambridge comments: "Our painstaking work with the spring set-up controls exactly how much the car pitches and rolls with every lump, bump, camber and pothole on our roads. Then we developed the dampers to control the rate at which the springs respond. Once we were satisfied with that, we set about really affecting the feel and response of the steering to inspire confidence."

To reduce roll and pitch and achieve an even flatter cornering attitude, Prodrive commissioned bespoke Eibach coil springs and Bilstein dampers.

Spring rates are increased by over 50 per cent compared to the standard Alfa Brera, giving the car a more nimble and agile feel, while the specially tuned gas-filled mono-tube dampers give tighter body control. A careful balance has been created to maintain good compliance over ridges and bumps in the road.

At the same time, the suspension static geometry has also been revised to optimise steering and handling. These changes, together with new 19" alloy wheels and Pirelli PZero Nero tyres, have created a more responsive turn-in to corners, with increased driver feedback, allowing the driver to explore the dynamic limits of the car.

To further enhance suspension geometry, the cars have been lowered by 10 mm front and rear. This lower centre of gravity helps reduce roll and improve cornering and braking performance. In addition, the lowered suspension gives the Alfa Romeo Brera S a more purposeful stance.

At each corner of the Alfa Romeo Brera S, unique Alfa 8C Competizione-inspired, lightweight 19" alloy wheels have been fitted. Although the wheels are eye-catching, the all-new design was commissioned by Prodrive primarily for performance, rather than just cosmetic appeal. The reason is unsprung weight - the weight carried by the car on the 'road side' of the spring and shock absorber. This plays a significant role in the way the car steers, handles and transmits feedback to the driver.

The lighter the wheel, the better it tracks undulations in the road surface without requiring heavy damping to control it. The unsprung weight has been further reduced by the adoption of hollow anti-roll bars and aluminium suspension components from the Factory.

As a result, the weight of both Alfa Romeo Brera S models is lower than the rest of the range. The front-wheel drive 3.2 V6 JTS is almost 100 kg lighter than the Q4 version and the 2.2 JTS version weighs 35 kg less.

The Alfa Romeo Brera S also sounds different from the standard range. The original characteristic growl of the V6 has been enhanced by careful redesign of the rear silencers. Thanks to a Holmholtz resonator connected in tandem with each silencer, the 2.2 JTS model now emits a sportier yet refined burble.

The exhaust has been altered to mirror the shape of the rear lights. Finished with chrome embellishers, they feature a Prodrive logo on the tailpipe exterior. This is just one of several subtle exterior enhancements to the award-winning Alfa Brera, including Prodrive branded front stone deflectors, and a bespoke red 'S' or 'SV6' on the C-pillar.

Inside the 3.2 V6 JTS Alfa Romeo Brera S, changes are more obvious. Not only are the supportive sports seats upholstered in soft black Frau® leather with red stitching, so are the dashboard fascia, door panels, steering wheel and gearlever. The centre console and instruments are faced in a dark finish. This interior can also be specified on the 2.2 JTS version.

Foot pedals are fashioned from drilled aluminium and the headrest recess houses a limited edition Brera S aluminium plate, featuring the flags of Italy and Britain.

For the record, the 2.2 JTS and 3.2 V6 JTS Alfa Romeo Brera S can reach 62 mph from rest in 8.6 and 7.0 seconds respectively, on the way to maximum speeds of 139 and 155 mph.

The transition from Alfa Brera to Brera S takes place at Alfa Romeo UK's dedicated import centre, near Bristol, and is overseen by Prodrive.

Nicholas Bernard says: "The standard Brera is well loved and delivers a great all-round driving experience. But the Alfa Romeo Brera S is deliberately honed, tuned and fettled for British roads and aimed directly at a dedicated audience of driving enthusiasts."

Auto sales likely to pick up Consultant predicts 7% growth this year

May 20, 2008 0 comments

Bangkok, Thailand : Thailand's automotive sector is likely to recover this year as vehicle sales pick up due to improved business and consumer confidence in the post-election environment, according to California-based Frost & Sullivan, a global growth consulting company.

Kavan Mukhtyar, partner and head of the automotive and transport practice for Asia Pacific, said new vehicle sales this year were expected to increase 7% to 675,000 units. Vehicle sales for the first three months to March increased 18% year-on-year as more new models were introduced and momentum from 2007 sales has carried over into this year.

Mr Mukhtyar said rising global oil prices may prompt a revision in retail fuel prices in Thailand. ''With the price of crude oil crossing US$120 per barrel, some amount of adjustment in the fuel price is likely. A rise in fuel prices will benefit models with high fuel efficiency and low cost of ownership,'' he said.

As a result, smaller compact cars are likely to become more popular. The implementation of the eco-car project by the end of 2009 would encourage sales of smaller fuel-efficient cars in the longer term. By 2012, new vehicle sales are projected to reach 943,000 units, representing average growth of 8.6% per year from 2008. In terms of trends, he said automakers were likely to provide high-tech add-ons such as navigation and entertainment systems as optional upgrades instead of the usual accessory makeovers or cosmetic facelifts to cater to more sophisticated consumers.

Automakers will also keep adding safety features and focusing more on after-sales services to differentiate themselves from the competition. Looking at trends across Asean, Mr Mukhtyar said fuel price increases had made total cost of ownership a significant purchase criterion for consumers. Smaller compact vehicles will therefore see faster growth.

In the four largest Asean markets _ Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines _ Mr Mukhtyar said vehicles sales in Indonesia were forecast to reach 515,000 units, up 18% from 2007, a relatively high level compared with only 7% growth for the other three countries. A reduction in financing rates and expected economic growth of 6% were likely to stimulate vehicle purchases. In Malaysia, vehicle sales are forecast at 521,200 units this year, up 7% from 2007 thanks to the favourable economic environment, rising pent-up replacement demand, sales carry-over from 2007 and new model variant launches. In the Philippines, vehicles sales were likely to reach 126,000 units this year, up 7% from 2007 driven by demand for commercial vehicles designed for both personal and business use, and new model launches last year. He noted that 2007 was the first time the Philippine industry had achieved sales of more than100,000 units since 1997 as used-car imports were halted and the industry gave consumers more vehicle choices and new car models.

Conservation drive seen pushing E20 car sales beyond 10,000 units

Bangkok, Thailand. : Thai drivers' enthusiasm for cost-saving alternative fuels is expected to push sales of passenger cars fuelled by E20 gasohol beyond the forecast of 100,000 units this year.

Vallop Tiasiri, president of the Thailand Automotive Institute, said sales of E20 vehicles were now expected to exceed 200,000 in 2008, dominating the compact and mid-sized passenger car segments. Record-high oil prices had prompted every car company to introduce an E20 model to attract motorists, he said.

More than 63,000 small and mid-sized sedans were sold in the first four months of this year. Almost all were E20 models. E20, a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% gasoline, has been available nationwide since the beginning of this year following the launch of E10 in 2003. US-based Ford Motor pioneered E20 cars locally by offering the Ford Focus in 2005. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Mazda have all joined the fray in the last few months.

Kurujit Nakornthap, deputy permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry, said brisk sales of E20 cars underlined the success of government measures to promote alternative fuels. With incentives from the Finance Ministry, the E20 vehicles are taxed at a 25% excise rate, against 30% collected on other passenger cars. Sales of E20 _ which is six baht a litre cheaper than premium petrol _ have reached 45,000 litres per day at the 1,000 out of 4,500 petrol stations nationwide sell the fuel.

Sales of NGV (natural gas for vehicles) have also jumped, from 25,000 tonnes a day in 2006 to 73,000 at present, with the number of stations selling the gas expected to reach 247 in July. The current 200 stations selling NGV are not enough to serve increasing demand, said Suparat Sirisuwannangkura, president of the Thai Automotive Industry Association. ''By using NGV instead of diesel, [vehicle operators] are able to cut costs by at least a third,'' said Mr Suparat, also an executive of Toyota Motor Thailand.
